Mississippi State's newest commit has some versatility. on where he will play at next level and where he fits

QuoteState has valued versatility and the ability to play on either side of the ball in its 2018 class lately with West Point's Marcus Murphy and Pearl's Johnquarise Patterson being two in-state examples.

Three-star athlete Nathaniel Watson out of Maplesville, Alabama, announced his verbal commitment to Mississippi State after being a top target for the Bulldogs throughout the summer.

Watson is expected to play wide receiver at the next level, but he can also play safety and linebacker. He will be given an opportunity to compete early as a wide receiver at MSU, sources close to the program said.

2019's No. 1 prospect is a Bulldog @CharlesMoore_11 #recruitingreport

QuoteMississippi's no. 1 prospect in the 2019 class, Louisville's Charles Moore, is pledged to be a Bulldog

The 6-foot-4, 240-pound defensive end gave his verbal commitment to Mississippi State Saturday afternoon, tweeting "I'm apart of the family..."

Moore suffered an ACL tear during Louisville's jamboree game against Starkville August 12. His initial reaction to the news he'd be out his junior season was worry — worry that this would have huge implications on his recruitment.

It didn't. What happened was a showing of "loyalty" on Mississippi State's part, as Moore put it.

"A lot of schools kind of fell back," Moore said. "They were the first and only school that reached out to my coaches and let my coaches know that I still had my offer, I still had a place to go and it was still home for me."

It was that loyalty that convinced Moore that State was where he belonged.

He already has big plans for the program, starting with recruiting the rest of Mississippi's 2019 stars to join him in Starkville.

.@_bigjames3 has committed to Mississippi State
http://www.clarionledger.com/story/sports/high-school/2017/10/03/callaways-james-williams-commits-mississippi-state/728534001/ ...

QuoteJames Williams, the No. 1 defensive end in the state and the No. 2 overall player, is a Mississippi State Bulldog.

"The fact that I know I can come in right away and play was a factor in my decision," Williams said. "I also feel at home in Starkville."

Williams said he wanted to take his time with the recruiting process, but he knew Tuesday morning it was the right time to make it official and commit to Mississippi State. He called Dan Mullen and let him know he'd make his announcement following Callaway's practice.

Williams is the eighth Dandy Dozen player to commit to Mississippi State this year and the 25th overall commitment for Mullen's 2018 class that is ranked 17th overall and sixth in the SEC. Mississippi State now holds commitments from six of the top seven recruits this year. Those close to the Mississippi State program feel this will have significant effects on in-state recruiting moving forward.

Commits react to the departure of Dan Mullen. Some are already looking forward to the Sept. 29 matchup vs Florida.

QuoteIt's been a rocky recruiting season for Mississippi's 2018 class. The resignation of Hugh Freeze can be credited for Mississippi State winning the in-state recruiting battle this year. Now, with the departure of Mullen, things are expected to change again with decommitments potentially imminent.

"Right now I'm just shocked," Malik Heath said. "I thought he was going to stay."

The Callaway wide receiver and No. 1 prospect in the state found out from his head coach Darius Brown that Mullen was leaving.

The 2018 commits are all in a group chat together, and right now the future is all they can talk about. Heath said everyone shares the same sentiments of shock and confusion.

Bulldogs 2018 class is currently ranked 15th nationally and fifth in the SEC. At this point, none of the 26 commits have decommited from the program.

What Mississippi State's recruiting outlook is one week before early signing period

QuoteWith one week left before the start of the early signing period, Mississippi State is in the position of trying to keep all of its remaining commits while landing a few attractive new ones.

Football's early signing period lasts from Dec. 20 through Dec. 22. After six decommits since Dan Mullen left for Florida on Nov. 26, the perception is that MSU is stumbling to the finish line, but that's not necessarily the case; there is more to the departures than that.

MSU over-recruited the class, Olive Branch cornerback Jaylon Reed said he was told, and didn't have spots for all the commits it had as early as last week (25). Reed decommitted over the weekend. It is unclear how many commits MSU ends up with for 2018. It currently has 20.

Safety LaDarrius Bishop is the most significant loss of the decommitted players and is one of only a couple where the breakup wasn't mutual. Bishop flipped to Arkansas, his hometown state, after receiving an offer from new coach Chad Morris.

in three weeks, Joe Moorhead learned to translate Yinz to y'all.
in that same span, he managed to secure a respectable signing class, too.
more on how he was able to do that (the recruiting part), plus what's next

QuoteSTARKVILLE — Joe Moorhead wanted to make sure people in Mississippi heard him.

"Did you see how I said, 'Y'all?'" Moorhead said Wednesday at the beginning of his press conference about signing day.

Well, yes. It was loud and clear. It didn't even sound rehearsed.

"In three short weeks, I've successfully transitioned because in Pittsburgh we say 'Yinz,'" Moorhead said. "So in three short weeks, I translated Yinz to y'all."

Mississippians will give him credit for that. But he gets more credit from Mississippi State fans for this: the Bulldogs' new head coach also managed to secure a respectable signing class in that span, too, with 15 signees.

No, the 2018 signing class didn't fall apart after Dan Mullen's departure on Nov. 26 and Moorhead's hiring two days later. The first day of the new early signing period for football wasn't perfect, but it also wasn't a nightmare. There was more good than bad. There is still work left to be done and Moorhead has until February to improve things.

Bulldogs addressed their most pressing need in an impressive way by landing four-star prospects Malik Heath (Callaway), Stephen Guidry (Hinds) and Devonta Jason (Landry-Walker in Louisiana). Heath and Guidry were already committed long before Moorhead's arrival. Jason announced his decision Wednesday, becoming the first player to commit to Moorhead at MSU.

All three will have an opportunity to play immediately...

for the most part, Mississippi State's 2018 signing class ended up looking the way it needed to

QuoteState's 2018 signing class wasn't ranked inside the top 25 as of the late afternoon on national signing day. It was No. 27. But here's something much more important: the Bulldogs' group ended up looking the way it needed to.

MSU's strong close on Wednesday addressed major needs, and that's what will be remembered most about Joe Moorhead's first signing class as the Bulldogs' head coach.

The heavy lifting was done in December when Mississippi State signed 15 players and took care of its biggest issue at wide receiver by signing three four-star prospects at the position. On Wednesday, the Bulldogs needed to add one of the state's best defensive linemen, two cornerbacks and at least one offensive lineman. They accomplished that.

Mississippi State announced the addition of eight signees on Wednesday, and the highest-rated newcomer was Olive Branch three-star defensive lineman Fabien Lovett. Lovett became the sixth Dandy Dozen player to sign with MSU.

Mississippi State loses huge commitment in 2019 class

QuoteSafety Diwun Black de-committed from the Bulldogs program late Sunday night.

Black is ranked the No. 3 recruit in the state of Mississippi and the No. 6 athlete in the country.

He recently made two visits — one official and one unofficial — to Ole Miss in February, according to 247Sports. He also has an offer from Mullen's new program at Florida.

Mississippi State receives commitment from 4-star WR Quinton Torbor

QuoteTorbor, ranked the 72nd overall wide receiver in the 2019 signing class, hails from Destrehan HS in Destrehan, La.

Torbor chose the Bulldogs over SEC rivals Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee, among others.

He joins quarterback 3-star dual-threat quarterback Garrett Shrader as recruits who have committed to the Bulldogs over the past two days. Shrader was the top target for Moorhead and should be a great fit to run the type of offense that the new head coach likes to run and was successful at at Penn State.

This is a loaded Mississippi recruiting class. How is Joe Moorhead faring with it so far?

QuoteSTARKVILLE — Before ending a speech Monday, the first day of a week-long "Road Dawg Tour," at Mississippi State's football complex, Joe Moorhead relayed a number to the crowd regarding his current recruiting class.

The nine Mississippi State 2019 commits come from six different states.

"Which," Moorhead said, "I think is pretty great."

Moorhead's take is subjective, of course, but the number is factual. Here's another accurate number: only three of Mississippi State's commitments are from Mississippi, though that amount will surely rise soon. Moorhead's first full recruiting year coincides with this being the deepest recruiting class for the state in recent memory. There are seven more months to go before the early signing period, but May is an important month on the recruiting calendar because of staffs' spring evaluations, and that's why Moorhead was talking about recruiting in the first place.

So there was Moorhead, a coach in the South for the first time, at a podium in Starkville saying the regional aspect of recruiting —where a coach is from — is overrated while only a third of his current group hailed from Mississippi.
