Texas is up there with Notre Dame when it comes to programs that people love to hate and each individual has their own reasons.  I have no animosity towards Bama, FSU, USC or any other school but have grown to despise those two programs whatever the sport.
I need to be more like my dog...if you can't fight it, screw it, or eat it, then piss on it.

Well - one reason us old timers like playing Texas is it reminds us of a time when we weren't considered the also rans of a conference.
When we were competitive and respected throughout the college football world.
We were really a premiere program.
The SEC financially has been good for us - but the prestige of the program has been greatly diminished.
Hopefully Beliema will get us back there.

So you have to be over 50 to understand how bad we hated Texas during our time in the SWC?

Is it huge? No.

Is it an important continuance to a historic rivalry? Yes.

Does it mean as much to Texas as it does to us? No.

it's not huge, eh......

Arkansas is 21-56 all time vs Texas. Series have to be a bit less one sided for me to call it a rivalry.

If 50 years from now when y'all are dead and gone, I'm old like all you old guys, and Arkansas has played like 5 games against Texas it sill won't be a rivalry. It will just be 5 more times Arkansas has played (and hopefully beaten) Texas.

But if you think it's a rivalry game, then hey, go out there and do what you do, enjoy yourselves, just don't think everybody should share your excitement.

My thing is hatred for something gives it standing; ignoring it belittles it. But have fun hating Texas, you guys earned it for enduring the 1970s of Arkansas vs Texas rivalry series.

When the game was being played we were, at best, #3 on their list.  And that was probably only from 50's onward when we won all but 5 of those 21 games.  Back in the day SMU & TCU were big dogs, but every old SWC team probably had a similar winning percentage against them.  And if you ask any of their older fans Texas was the #1 team they wanted to beat.  So when we call it a rivalry game we get it isn't Alabama/Auburn, etc. But if you spend 30 something years of your life wanting to beat a certain team more than any other team it does take on a life of its own.

After 20 plus years of not playing every year and having good friends in Texas I don't really hate Texas any more.  But to this day I enjoy seeing Texas lose.  And relish the opportunity to hand them another loss.

jrulz83, I'm telling hoglady you called her an old guy.

Texas is always going to be one of our top 2 or 3 recruiting areas outside the state.  So another game in Texas against Texas with the month of free publicity is a big deal.  Louisiana being next door to Houston doesn't hurt.  Yep, we know it ain't 64, 69 or 81.  But maybe outside of playing Miami in Shreveport there isn't any other bowl remotely close to the benefits.

That was a great one to see.  I was there also and it was awesome.  And last texas/Arkansas game I attended too. My junior year on the hill.

Edit:  I forgot i went to the game in 2004 when Jones fumbled in the last couple minutes.  that was a great game and fantastic crowd. Best crowd I have ever seen/heard including the 2010 Bama game.

With the Houston area devoid of a major college team (sorry Uof H) to take up the sport pages in the Houston Chronicle for the next month, there will be a lot of coverage of the Texas Bowl.  We have a lot of highly ranked high school football payers reading about us.  I would think a lot of them and their coaches will be invited to several events.  This would not be happening at a Liberty or Independence Bowl.

I'm 28 and feel this is the biggest bowl matchup of the last 10 years. HUGE game for so many reasons.

I hate texas all the way down to my itty bitty tip of my pinky.

I hope we get some legends to speak to the team before the game.  I hate to say it, he's not a legend, but I wouldn't mind if HDN spoke to the team before the game.

I'm a little disappointed not going to the Independence - but that's just selfish reasons ( I grew up in Bossier City). I think playing Texas in Houston gets more exposure than playing Miami in Shreveport. Advantage to Shreveport is that stadium would be a sea of red. I bet the Independence is sick with the matchup they have - neither team will bring many fans.

I'm not close to 50 but I was raised right.

Forgetting about our history with Texas, there are still reasons to hate the Horns.

They are the ultimate front runners in all of college sports.  The weaker the competition, the more advantages they have the better for the Horns.  Their arrogance is unsurpassed except perhaps only by their failure to back up for the past 40+ years.

Probably not, we don't have any history with them.  Without looking it up, I don't think we have ever played them?  Penn St or any team not from Texas isn't going to get the same amount of local press.  And the high school kids wouldn't have the same interest I don't think.

But would still rather play in that bowl against someone else than most other bowls we had an actual shot at.  Apparently we can invite high school coaches and players to practices, etc.  So there are recruiting perks are still there.

Yeah, I would have enjoyed a chance to curb stomp Miami.  And you are correct, after the past two years getting to a bowl is god.

Hog fans still pining away over a "rivalry" that one side simply dominated. I am glad the Hogs are in a bowl game, after the lst two seasons, the program needed it. However, hog fans talk all the time about how overrated Texas always is, and how weak the big12-2-1+3*1.5 is, but now beating a 6-6 Texas team is supposed to be some amazing thing? I don't get that.

And I am 44 years old, and one of my best Hog memories ever was watching the Horns melt down in Fay when ranked #1. It was a big deal when they were in the same league and often battling for the conf title.  But this is the Hogs 3rd game in Texas this year, FYI, there are places to recruit and play outside of that state.

I'm 57 and old enough to remember and went to school at the UA when we were still in the SWC. I couldn't care less about tejas. That's in the past and I don't like living in the past and didn't care who or where we played in the bowl. The only reasons I was happy to see where we played was for the players it seems like the best reward for all their hard work this year over the other bowls that were mentioned. Also for getting even more exposure for recruiting in tejas as well as giving back to the fans that are unfortunate enough to live down there. Also for the opportunity to beat what is traditionally a nationally known program that everyone loves to hate and not just Hog fans either...................Oh and don't forget the extra practices and money.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

I would bet money that you're either lying about your age or haven't been an Arkansas fan for most of your life.  You didn't hear any of this griping about playing Texas as recently as 15-20 years ago, so it's hard to believe that anyone your age actually feels that way, despite that several claim they do.

Be honest...how many here who are saying they don't at least dislike Texas have ever attended a game at UT?  Show of hands please...

I think a big part of the dislike/hatred for UT by the "older crowd" is because the odds are much greater that they've actually attended a game in Austin over their lifetimes.  It's the very same reason I DESPISE LSU, and if you've been to a few games there, then you can probably relate.

At Texas, they're as smug as any fans you're ever going to see...worse than Bama.  UT's campus is like a city...no joke.  MAJOR sense of entitlement.  I cannot stand LSU...they're worse than Texas fans, because they're a "Johnny come lately" to success and they feel that gives them the right to act smug, AND they act crass and low class to go along with it.

And for those saying we never meant anything to Texas...you should try listening to some of the Texas players who played from the era spanning from the 60's through the 80's. They knew the Arkansas game was going to be a battle, and they had it circled in many years as the game they had to win for the SWC title.  Unfortunately, they won it most of the time.

As some have said...that 2004 game was loud and raucous.  There's a reason for that....   :razorback:

Having said all of that, this game scares me.  We're expected to win, and IMO we don't have much to gain.  Unfortunately, and I said it bothered me when they entered the league, TAMU will go right into the homes of the recruits that are on the fence and say, "You saw what Arkansas did to Texas in the Texas bowl...you should come play in the SEC, not the Big 10/12."  I'm not sure how much beating Texas really helps us in recruiting with the uprising of TCU and Baylor, and TAMU now being in the SEC.

Those of us who can't stand Texas's egocentric smug attitudes will love it though.   8)

See, right there is the big misconception about this whole discussion. I have not seen people saying they do not have a dislike for Texas. I do not like them, can't stand their smug attitude, and think they have been woefully under performing for years, BUT I also do not think playing them is the be all end all that some think it is.

If the Hogs were not already playing A&M every year, were not in the middle of a home and home with TT, and did not have TCU coming up on the schedule, I would think this game was great. There are so many teams the Hogs have rarely or never played, ND, PN St, VT, Clem, UCLA, Neb, Ohio St just to name a few, it would be nice to see a match up with one of those teams.  Are people really trying to tell me beating Texas is a bigger deal, FOR THE PROGRAM NOW, is better than beating a Ohio St or a UCLA?

I do not like Texas, I do not like any team other than Arkansas. I will usually choose sides in a game I want to watch, just to make it fun, but I do not follow any other team.
