Welcome to Lubbock, Razorback Nation! It has been way to long.  I can say we have missed you guys since your departure.  Arkansas and Tech were always considered the step children of the old SWC and we shared a common bond there and our mutal hatered for UT.  What I don't miss is the many beatings your Razorbacks put on Tech during those SWC days.  :'(  However, the last two games played were W's for my Red Raiders!   ;D

Since your last visit back in 1991 you will notice that Jones Stadium and Lubbock has changed greatly.  Seating Capacity is now 61,000 and many more creature comforts have been added.  In the near future another expansion is expected to bring capacity to 75k.    Lubbock, home of Texas Tech, is many things but one thing we are not is a bunch of hayseeds as some may think, and this area is not a wasteland.  Don't believe the crap you may hear from our downstate neighbors.   Just like you for the Hogs,  we are wildly passionate about our Red Raiders. Some people just don't understand a passionate fan base?  Tech has a fan base that would equal any in the great SEC.  You may have heard some crap of how bad our fan base can be. Much of which is simply not  true. A lot of what is said about Texas Tech and the Tech fans come from disturbed and jealous agholes, (um err Texas aggies).   Tech fans are very passionate about Texas Tech, Lubbock and West Texas and if provoked they will defend it venomously. If you are cordial we are as well.  I digress.

I am posting this here on your board because I thought some of your fans coming to the "Giant Side of Texas" would like to know some things to do and maybe a few suggestions on eateries and such.   I would like to introduce you to some sights and sounds of Lubbock, West Texas and Texas Tech and what this area of the world is about.

Lubbock is a diverse rapidly growing place of about 240,000 souls. (Metro is approaching 300,000) and is many things. Desolate, desert and waste land it is not. 40% of the nation's cotton is grown within 90 miles of Lubbock. 90% of the state wine grapes are grown around Lubbock and 40% of the state's vegetable crops are grown around Lubbock. Waste land it isn't.

Here are a few videos of Lubbock to get more of a visual of what Lubbock REALLY looks like and what we are all about...

A little of the West Texas Rock/Country can be heard all through the Depot District and across Lubbock's many venues nightly. Austin is thought of the capital of Texas music but in reality it started here in Lubbock many, many years ago. Some of Lubbock's music legends are, Buddy Holly, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Pat Greene, Mac Davis, Josh Abbot plus many others. Here is some West Texas Rock and Roll as it is called.

Your opponent on September 13tht...Texas Tech University, has the seventh-largest student body in the state of Texas.  With 1,839 acres, it has the second largest contiguous campus in the United States and is the only school in Texas to house an undergraduate institution, graduate, law school, and medical school at the same location. With an endowment about to go over $1billion, Texas Tech is now poised to reach Tier I status. Impressive for a institution that is not even 100 years old yet. With over 35,000 students on the main campus in Lubbock, Texas Tech operates 14 other campuses around the state as well as Angelo State University in San Angelo. With large vistas and buildings that must keep in tradition of the Spanish Renaissance building style, Texas Tech is truly one of the nation's most beautiful campuses. Ck it out...

OKAY...the reason you're coming to the High Plains. GAMEDAY! The game is a nearing sellout, about 900 tickets are left.  Tech is expecting 61,000.
Parking can be interesting due to the urban nature of where the stadium sits.  However, the areas east of the stadium is a good spot, but come early as these areas fill quickly.  You can also park in the west commuter lots and take a shuttle bus for $5.  Also there is some free parking available at the Museum at Texas Tech on 4th street and Indiana Avenue.  Here is the parking link for this weeks game.

Texas Tech was voted best tailgating school in the BIG 12 by the Denver post in the late 2000's. Sporting News had Tech as #3. Recently a publication voted Texas Tech's Jones AT&T stadium as the toughest place to play in the country saying, what it lacks in size (capacity 60,894) it makes up for in a very passionate and ruckus fan base. Just look at the top 5 ranked upsets Tech has notched over the last few years.  In 2012 #5 ranked West Virginia found  out that "Upsets do Live Here" to a tune of 49-14.   For big games the "Jones" is electric and can be downright deafening. Check it out here for the Tech vs. Texas game in 2008. May want to turn down the sound on your computer it is loud...

Arkansas fans, I know you probably have that one game, maybe two or three. Those that you can still almost feel and will remember for a very long time. For Red Raider Fans, it was November 2008, #7 Texas Tech vs. #1 Texas.

How about some food!   There are many.  Lubbock has all the chains like Texas Roadhouse, Chuys, Chillis plus others.  Here is a list of some local Lubbock fare you might want to try.

Orlando's Italian...Two locations.  The one on Avenue Q, just south of the 19th street is a good spot if you are staying in the downtown area.  Other location is on the South Loop just north of Indiana Avenue.  .  It is Italian with a little kick.  Freshly made and  not frozen or out of a box here.  Can be crowded on home football weekends.  Here is the web page:

http://www.orlandos.com

Try the Green Chili Chicken Linguini or the Chicken Dijon.  The Pizzas are hand made and are great.

Hungry for Steaks, there is several very good ones here in Lubbock.

50 yardline...Located on the South Loop between Indiana Avenue and University Avenue is a place that serves certified angus beef steaks in a setting of Tech memorabilia.  Good price for the quality of steaks you receive.  Service is usually excellent.

http://www.50-yardline.com

Double Nickel...Located  off Slide road between 50th street and the loop.  Upscale and very good.  One of the best in Texas.

http://www.doublenickelsteakhouse.com

Something Different:

Pecan Grill at the Overton Hotel   Great place for a nice meal.  Always fresh and prepared with love..  Located in the Overton Hotel a block away from the Stadium.

http://www.overtonhotel.com/pecan-grill.html

Mexican Food...

Ruby Tequila's...Two locations.  There is one directly across from the stadium.  Full Service.  Typical Mexican food fare.

http://www.rubytequilas.com/index.html

Sazon's...Located a few blocks from the stadium.  Very good place to eat.  Ck out the web site.

http://www.visitlubbock.org/business/Dining//44

Sports Bar and Grills...

Nick's...located on 98th and Quaker Avenue, this place has everything covered.  Big screens everywhere and not bad bar food either.   Pizzas are really good.  This place has VIP rooms as well.

http://www.nickssportsgrill.com

Also of course there is Buffalo Wild Wings.  Two locations in Lubbock as well.  Everywhere you go in Lubbock as far as a restaurant, there is always tv's on as Lubbock is obsessed with College Football.

Quick Eats around and close to the stadium...there are the chains of course, chili's, panda express, chick fil a, golden chick, chipotles, etc.

Chimmy's  ...  This is the original...if you have seen them around the state.  Located blocks from the Stadium on Broadway and University avenues.  Cheap and always a huge hangout before games and on weekends.

Arrogant Texan BBQ...located a few blocks from the Stadium on University.  Afterwards try their ice cream.  It is really good.

https://www.facebook.com/thearroganttexan

Spanky's...a Tech tradition.  This small burger joint (recently expanded) is about a block and half away from the stadium.  Serving hamburger type fare.  A must though...be sure and get the fried cheese.  Excellent.

http://spankys.com/

A place you might want to ck out before or after the game is called the Roof Top Bar located on top of the large parking garage across the freeway just north of the stadium.  You can't miss it.  Here is a link.

https://www.facebook.com/therooflubbock?rf=202220226515041

Someone even posted a video of it after the Beat down of West Virginia in 2012.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KJYQmTH-HK0

Also be sure and check out the award winning wineries in Lubbock.  Caprock and Llano are the ones that have the most medals won.  They do tasting tours on the weekends just call for information and directions.  These are for real...they aren't some rinky dink deals.  You can take home a little bit of Lubbock.

http://www.caprockwinery.com/
http://llanowine.com/

Also tailgating at Tech is some of the best.  Raider Alley has some great live bands...Dixie Chicks played  here before they became huge.  Don't be surprised if your drawn in to a Red Raider's tailgate for some tasty food  and a cold one.

I know this was long...but thought some of you Razorback fans would enjoy a little tid bit about your old brother Texas Tech and see that Lubbock and Texas Tech isn't what some have said or say.  I am sure you get that from some others as well like maybe UT fans?

Again WELCOME and safe travels, and here is to a great game.

Little known fact, but prior to settling on Guantanamo, the Pentagon wanted to house terror suspects at War Memorial Stadium.  It was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

I think it's a common event whether it is in AR or around the world where a group of Hog fans get together.  I've seen it in TN, TX, LA and in Germany.  Being a Razorback is like being in a brotherhood.  When the brotherhood meet, they call the Hogs.

I always liked (beating) Texas Tech. Looking forward to those warm (successful and satisfied) feelings again. Welcome old friends - we truly want to shake your hands (we want to shake them real good)!
I expect to win the games we ought to win and be competitive in as many other games as possible. - M Barton

We all enjoyed that game against Texass.

Little off topic, what do Tech fans generally think about the big 12 as now constructed and possible move to the PAC 12?

I was out there twice in 1979. Red Raiders-Hogs basketball game on the last day of the regular season (Hogs won when Moncrief hit a long jumper with less than 20 seconds left) and football in the Fall (20-6, Hogs). I have a couple of questions:
(1) One unusual feature of the football stadium was a wide concrete concourse/walkway that circled most of the stadium, about halfway up. On top of the wall, on the "field" side of the concourse, were sharp spikes which, I assumed, were to keep folks from leaning on that wall, and bothering the ticket-holders just below. Are those spikes still there?
(2) Another unusual feature of the campus was a circular fire pit with a separate section dedicated to each SWC school, laid out in mosaic tile in sections encircling the fire pit. Is that still there? Did they replace the old tiles when TT changed conferences?

I enjoyed our trips to Lubbock, but it was a long frickin' drive.

Nice post about the city, university, and stuff to do...

Now let's talk about the real reason we are there- to play football.  Any thoughts on your team?  Just looking at the box scores for your two games, it seems that both games are closer than I would have expected.  However, I didn't watch either and don't know what is behind the data.

Excellent info.

Too young to remember the SWC days but I love playing the old rivals like Texas Tech, Texas, and of course new to the SEC aTm.

We need to get SMU back on the schedule. They are HORRIBLE.

bigdaddyhawg

Of all our former SEC foes, TT was by far my favorite.

And I especially became a Red Raider fan during Leach's top years as they were beating the corksoakers OU and UT that I wanted beat so badly.

Not a fan of the current cover boy who is their coach -- too much him and too little about his team.

I'd say 41-28 would be a solid prediction.  Hogs, of course!

The first two games we have had a horrible time stopping the run by average to below average opponents.  Our discipline is not very good with stupid penalties and our offense though extremely explosive is hot and cold in the first two games.

Your strengths offensively is our weakness defensively so far this year.  What looked as a easy non conference win before the season is now a game that could go bad quickly if our young defense doesn't improve QUICKLY!

East TN HAWG

RaiderRed your strengths are our weaknesses too.  Stopping a passing offense has been the thorn in our sides.

I digress.

While this is a great (and lengthy) post, I must say that I have heard bad things about your fan base from Baylor, UT, and OSU fans as well.  Especially from the first two.  I left Texas a couple of years ago, and hopefully that has changed. Here's to a good game.  I think the Hogs win by 17.

No the spikes are long gone.  The stadium that you remember is nothing like it was.  The concourse you speak of is now been filled in with seats.  A mezzanine level is now under the stadium deck.

(2) Another unusual feature of the campus was a circular fire pit with a separate section dedicated to each SWC school, laid out in mosaic tile in sections encircling the fire pit. Is that still there? Did they replace the old tiles when TT changed conferences?

That was the old SWC pit.  LOL, we would put a hog on a spit when we played Arkansas and roast it there.  That location is now the new Petroleum Engineering Building.  The SWC pit was moved to make room for the new building.  They are trying to find a location to put it.

I enjoyed our tips to Lubbock, but it was a long frickin' drive.

Great info and very well organized

We all enjoyed that game against Texass.

Little off topic, what do Tech fans generally think about the big 12 as now constructed and possible move to the PAC 12?

Good question...I can only speak for myself and the ones I associate with.  The BIG 12 is in a very precarious situation.  With no other viable asset type teams to bring in the conference, we have to hope for the best.  What I mean by asset type teams is schools that would add value not be just another mouth to feed.  With the current set up with the TV money and such with only 10 schools to divide the pie, it is very lucrative.  We do like the "true champion" motto the conference is chirping about.  Playing everyone in the conference is something I personally like.  I wasn't a fan of rotating 3 north schools in every 2 years.

The reason we are in the situation we are in is simple.  UT's arrogance and demands on the others to be associated with them.  Nebraska and Colorado had enough and left.  Then when SEC called Mizzou and A&M, that almost killed it.  As you mentioned the PAC 12 did come calling for OSU, OU, Tech and UT.  However, Baylor got all butt hurt and they have quite a bit of power in Texas politics and when UT wouldn't give up their Longhorn Network, Pac 12 said never mind.  We were pretty excited about the move if it were to have happened.  However, the culture likely would have been not a very good fit.  The four schools, OSU, OU, UT and Tech are more southern than western.  More conservative than liberal, except UT.

I can say this though, when A&M did leave...no matter how much UT doesn't want to admit it, it hurt.  Big 12 was in a trouble and UT realized they had to stay with us.  So they gave up some of their demands that no school have tv second tier rights plus other issues that made Nebraska leave, and to some extent A&M.  However, they would not give up their network.  While other conferences are getting their own network to showcase the conference as a whole and to share monies from that network equally, UT continues to hold the BIG 12 hostage and will not allow such a network like the BIG 12 network.  This is becoming a hot button within the conference.

BYU was a option for expansion but their strict no play on sunday, is not in the conferences best interest.  Cincy, meh....they are buried in a professional sports market.  Ya'll remember the issues with that with Rice, SMU, TCU and U of H back in the ol SWC days.  There was some talk of Arizona and Arizona State joining the BIG 12 to get back to 12.  However, it was shot down pretty quick by those institutions as they were afraid they would lose their recruiting hot bed of S California.

Some of us big 12'ers wish for Arkansas and A&M coming back.  Think about that.  We'd all be back together again.  Ya'll would renew the hate game with UT and open that pipeline back into Texas for recruiting...and we would have our hate bowl back with aghole.

BIG 12 as strong as it is, sits on shaky foundation in my book...all due to UT's demand for them to have the final word on everything.

Good info... thanks.   As was said, our weaknesses (Pass D) so far has been your strength... so we share common concerns about the match-ups.

We were able to run it fairly easily on Auburn...in the first half.  They wore down our young defense in the 2nd and it got a little out of hand.  Nicholl's didn't really provide much information... 5 one play drives led to the exorcising of some demons from the past couple of years frustration.

Should be a good game... contrast of styles could make the final score not consistent with the actual game (either way).

Classy gesture - Raider Red.
I'm an old timer - I really miss those SWC days. More fond memories of those years than the 20 or so years in the SEC. Financially the SEC has been great for us - but for program prestige and respect not so much.

That is to be seen.  IF our defense hasn't improved greatly from week 2 it is going to be like the Kansas State game in Lubbock last year I think.  It wasn't pretty.  I had bitter fan face that day as I wasn't expecting it.

As soon as the this weeks parking link on TexasTech.com comes up I will post a link here...

Failed to mention that country legend Waylon Jennings born and raise just outside of Lubbock in Littlefield.
