this area is not a wasteland.  Don't believe the crap you may hear from our downstate neighbors. Just like you for the Hogs,  we are wildly passionate about our Red Raiders. Some people just don't understand a passionate fan base?  Tech has a fan base that would equal any in the great SEC.

I quit reading after this^

Just kidding good post and welcome. Good luck the rest of the year AFTER this weekend.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

Glad to have Texas Tech on the schedule, no matter what. This is the kind of game Arkansas needs if it is going to improve.

The factors that decide this football game might have nothing to do with style. Or everything. Could be weather. Right now the forecast says Lubbock's gonna get half an inch of rain on Friday. What if that slipped into Saturday? Fumbles and interceptions could be the deciding factor. So far, Tech's minus-3 in turnover margin. Field goals could be the factor. Neither team is proven there. Special teams returns and coverage could be the factor. Penalties could be it (T-Tech has 25 penalties in two games).

Something you might have missed: The Red Raiders have rushed for 421 yards in two football games. They've thrown for 730. That's pretty wild.

I don't care about their defense's averages, though their yards allowed per carry number is pretty good. T-Tech has forced 12 punts and held opponents to 31% conversion on third downs. In the red zone, they only gave up touchdowns six out of 10, which is pretty good.

So far, the real difference in scoring in Tech's games has been the second quarter, in which they outscored their foes 30-20.

Texas Tech has only played Central Arkansas and UTEP, but gosh. They are gaining 6.4 yards per rush and 13 yards per catch. Those are big numbers. Defensive strategy on both sides is going to play a major role in the outcome of this game, most likely. Will Arkansas adopt a big risk, big possible return approach on defense? Or be more conservative and force the Red Raiders to execute?

My guess is that it would be a mistake for Arkansas to be afraid of its players' ability and try to compensate with risk-taking. If that is the way this game goes, I'll be very disappointed in the coaching. Unless it works of course. Then I'll dub them geniuses.

Don't know why..........

Football championships...
Arkansas (14 - 3rd in SWC): 1933, 1936, 1946*, 1954, 1959*, 1960, 1961*, 1964, 1965, 1968*, 1975*, 1979*, 1988, 1989

Basketball championships...Arkansas (22 titles - 1st in SWC): 1926, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935*, 1936, 1938, 1941, 1942*, 1944*, 1949*, 1950*, 1958*, 1977, 1978*, 1979*, 1981, 1982, 1989, 1990, 1991

What I mean is that the snobs in Dallas Houston and Austin don't consider anything relevant or of importance unless it is along or inside the I-35 or I-45 corridors.   Has nothing to do about the championships...cause ya'll won a plenty of those.

Welcome to Lubbock, Razorback Nation! It has been way to long.  I can say we have missed you guys since your departure.  Arkansas and Tech were always considered the step children of the old SWC and we shared a common bond there and our mutal hatered for UT.  What I don't miss is the many beatings your Razorbacks put on Tech during those SWC days.  :'(  However, the last two games played were W's for my Red Raiders!   ;D

Since your last visit back in 1991 you will notice that Jones Stadium and Lubbock has changed greatly.  Seating Capacity is now 61,000 and many more creature comforts have been added.  In the near future another expansion is expected to bring capacity to 75k.    Lubbock, home of Texas Tech, is many things but one thing we are not is a bunch of hayseeds as some may think, and this area is not a wasteland.  Don't believe the crap you may hear from our downstate neighbors.   Just like you for the Hogs,  we are wildly passionate about our Red Raiders. Some people just don't understand a passionate fan base?  Tech has a fan base that would equal any in the great SEC.  You may have heard some crap of how bad our fan base can be. Much of which is simply not  true. A lot of what is said about Texas Tech and the Tech fans come from disturbed and jealous agholes, (um err Texas aggies).   Tech fans are very passionate about Texas Tech, Lubbock and West Texas and if provoked they will defend it venomously. If you are cordial we are as well.  I digress.

I am posting this here on your board because I thought some of your fans coming to the "Giant Side of Texas" would like to know some things to do and maybe a few suggestions on eateries and such.   I would like to introduce you to some sights and sounds of Lubbock, West Texas and Texas Tech and what this area of the world is about.

Lubbock is a diverse rapidly growing place of about 240,000 souls. (Metro is approaching 300,000) and is many things. Desolate, desert and waste land it is not. 40% of the nation's cotton is grown within 90 miles of Lubbock. 90% of the state wine grapes are grown around Lubbock and 40% of the state's vegetable crops are grown around Lubbock. Waste land it isn't.

Here are a few videos of Lubbock to get more of a visual of what Lubbock REALLY looks like and what we are all about...

A little of the West Texas Rock/Country can be heard all through the Depot District and across Lubbock's many venues nightly. Austin is thought of the capital of Texas music but in reality it started here in Lubbock many, many years ago. Some of Lubbock's music legends are, Buddy Holly, Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Pat Greene, Mac Davis, Josh Abbot plus many others. Here is some West Texas Rock and Roll as it is called.

Your opponent on September 13tht...Texas Tech University, has the seventh-largest student body in the state of Texas.  With 1,839 acres, it has the second largest contiguous campus in the United States and is the only school in Texas to house an undergraduate institution, graduate, law school, and medical school at the same location. With an endowment about to go over $1billion, Texas Tech is now poised to reach Tier I status. Impressive for a institution that is not even 100 years old yet. With over 35,000 students on the main campus in Lubbock, Texas Tech operates 14 other campuses around the state as well as Angelo State University in San Angelo. With large vistas and buildings that must keep in tradition of the Spanish Renaissance building style, Texas Tech is truly one of the nation's most beautiful campuses. Ck it out...

OKAY...the reason you're coming to the High Plains. GAMEDAY! The game is a nearing sellout, about 900 tickets are left.  Tech is expecting 61,000.
Parking can be interesting due to the urban nature of where the stadium sits.  However, the areas east of the stadium is a good spot, but come early as these areas fill quickly.  You can also park in the west commuter lots and take a shuttle bus for $5.  Also there is some free parking available at the Museum at Texas Tech on 4th street and Indiana Avenue.  As soon as the this weeks parking link on TexasTech.com comes up I will post a link here...

Texas Tech was voted best tailgating school in the BIG 12 by the Denver post in the late 2000's. Sporting News had Tech as #3. Recently a publication voted Texas Tech's Jones AT&T stadium as the toughest place to play in the country saying, what it lacks in size (capacity 60,894) it makes up for in a very passionate and ruckus fan base. Just look at the top 5 ranked upsets Tech has notched over the last few years.  In 2012 #5 ranked West Virginia found  out that "Upsets do Live Here" to a tune of 49-14.   For big games the "Jones" is electric and can be downright deafening. Check it out here for the Tech vs. Texas game in 2008. May want to turn down the sound on your computer it is loud...

Arkansas fans, I know you probably have that one game, maybe two or three. Those that you can still almost feel and will remember for a very long time. For Red Raider Fans, it was November 2008, #7 Texas Tech vs. #1 Texas.

ESPN's Road Trip came to Lubbock for that game... Video 1 before game and 2 game day. Shows some of the many traditions of Texas Tech.

How about some food!   There are many.  Lubbock has all the chains like Texas Roadhouse, Chuys, Chillis plus others.  Here is a list of some local Lubbock fare you might want to try.

Orlando's Italian...Two locations.  The one on Avenue Q, just south of the 19th street is a good spot if you are staying in the downtown area.  Other location is on the South Loop just north of Indiana Avenue.  .  It is Italian with a little kick.  Freshly made and  not frozen or out of a box here.  Can be crowded on home football weekends.  Here is the web page:

http://www.orlandos.com

Try the Green Chili Chicken Linguini or the Chicken Dijon.  The Pizzas are hand made and are great.

Hungry for Steaks, there is several very good ones here in Lubbock.

50 yardline...Located on the South Loop between Indiana Avenue and University Avenue is a place that serves certified angus beef steaks in a setting of Tech memorabilia.  Good price for the quality of steaks you receive.  Service is usually excellent.

http://www.50-yardline.com

Double Nickel...Located  off Slide road between 50th street and the loop.  Upscale and very good.  One of the best in Texas.

http://www.doublenickelsteakhouse.com

Something Different:

Pecan Grill at the Overton Hotel   Great place for a nice meal.  Always fresh and prepared with love..  Located in the Overton Hotel a block away from the Stadium.

http://www.overtonhotel.com/pecan-grill.html

Mexican Food...

Ruby Tequila's...Two locations.  There is one directly across from the stadium.  Full Service.  Typical Mexican food fare.

http://www.rubytequilas.com/index.html

Sazon's...Located a few blocks from the stadium.  Very good place to eat.  Ck out the web site.

http://www.visitlubbock.org/business/Dining//44

Sports Bar and Grills...

Nick's...located on 98th and Quaker Avenue, this place has everything covered.  Big screens everywhere and not bad bar food either.   Pizzas are really good.  This place has VIP rooms as well.

http://www.nickssportsgrill.com

Also of course there is Buffalo Wild Wings.  Two locations in Lubbock as well.  Everywhere you go in Lubbock as far as a restaurant, there is always tv's on as Lubbock is obsessed with College Football.

Quick Eats around and close to the stadium...there are the chains of course, chili's, panda express, chick fil a, golden chick, chipotles, etc.

Chimmy's  ...  This is the original...if you have seen them around the state.  Located blocks from the Stadium on Broadway and University avenues.  Cheap and always a huge hangout before games and on weekends.

Arrogant Texan BBQ...located a few blocks from the Stadium on University.  Afterwards try their ice cream.  It is really good.

https://www.facebook.com/thearroganttexan

Spanky's...a Tech tradition.  This small burger joint (recently expanded) is about a block and half away from the stadium.  Serving hamburger type fare.  A must though...be sure and get the fried cheese.  Excellent.

http://spankys.com/

Also be sure and check out the award winning wineries in Lubbock.  Caprock and Llano are the ones that have the most medals won.  They do tasting tours on the weekends just call for information and directions.  These are for real...they aren't some rinky dink deals.  You can take home a little bit of Lubbock.

http://www.caprockwinery.com/
http://llanowine.com/

Also tailgating at Tech is some of the best.  Raider Alley has some great live bands...Dixie Chicks played  here before they became huge.  Don't be surprised if your drawn in to a Red Raider's tailgate for some tasty food  and a cold one.

I know this was long...but thought some of you Razorback fans would enjoy a little tid bit about your old brother Texas Tech and see that Lubbock and Texas Tech isn't what some have said or say.  I am sure you get that from some others as well like maybe UT fans?

Again WELCOME and safe travels, and here is to a great game.

Orlando's is the best Italian food I have ever had!  Chicken Parm is the best any place!!  I eat here four time a year for 18 years!!!  Traveled many, many miles in TEXAS!!  Make sure it's Ave Q!!

Great info RaiderRed and I'll be in the "oasis of the South Plains" on Saturday. Spent many a day back in the early & late 80's in the Permian Basin and S. Plains and Lubbock has always been a great little city despite what many feel.

You mentioned parking east of Jones AT&T but can you give some locations if you have any off the top of your head? I was thinking about parking in the Wal-Mart Supercenter @ Ave T/Mac Davis Drive after doing some "last min. shopping". Translated: buy some adult beverages, but the last thing I want to happen is to get towed.

Do any of the local restaurants or fast food places near the stadium offer paid parking? I'm coming in from Canyon early Sat. AM so any advice or help is appreciated.

The tradition that sticks in my mind from my 3 trips to Lubbock to watch the Hogs and Raiders (during the mid-60's to early 70's) were the "Eat More Pork" signs all across the campus on Game Day.

You will be shocked at how much Lubbock has changed and grown since the 80's.  Fourth street that ran just by the stadium on the north side is now a 6 lane freeway...the old housing area just east of the stadium was torn down in the largest reclamation project and now student housing and 4* hotel (The Overton) plus single family homes are now there.  If you come early, say 11am, you can park along the streets there about 2 blocks east of University Avenue.  It is free and very safe area.

You might want to avoid the area just NE of the stadium as it isn't a great area of town.  There is a catholic church on Avenue X and Main street that has a large parking lot that they charge a nominal fee to park in.   Most areas on the Tech campus are for donors and such.  Free parking is located off of Indiana and 6th Street just West of the Medical school complex.  Paid parking is available through TexasTech.com under tickets.

Parking along Broadway east of University Avenue is also a good bet.  Though a hike, 19th street is another area.  This way you can hear the sweetest sound I know when walking back to your vehicle...The Victory Bells Ringing after the victory.  LOLOL  19th street is the southern border of the campus.  I keep waiting for the parking map to be updated so I can post in the original post.

Since your last trip to Lubbock, it is about 120k bigger.

Main reason why Arkansas left the SWC = Arkansas was the only team in the conference that didn't have multiple losing seasons (or get the death penalty) in the 1980s. Unfortunately, Arkansas couldn't get out before Ken Hatfield had sabotaged consecutive seasons of recruiting as he searched two years for another job (about which Frank Broyles was surprisingly oblivious). We entered the SEC at a talent low point - then Broyles piled on by firing our head coach after the Citadel debacle that opened 1992. Arkansas's never been in consistently good operating condition since then.

You represent your school and community nicely.  You'll be an enemy on Saturday but I hope you stick around for some Big 12 perspective.

True on the charter memeber, but False on not being a step child.  You miss the point.  Arkansas and Texas Tech sit outside of the i-35 and I-45 corridors.  In Texas if you do not live within or close to this, the snobs in Austin, Houston and Dallas consider it or you non existent and irrelevant.  Many Arkansas Alumni I have talked to have told me the same thing.  One reason ya'll bolted in 1992!

You are correct on being a stepchild, but we bolted because the hand writing was on the wall.  And the offer was to go to pass up.

A good friend who passed last fall was a TT grad and grew up in Lubbock.  After 30 years in Arkansas he was a Hog fan, but no question where the ultimate loyalty was.  We started talking about this game as soon as it was announced.  This week is bittersweet without him here to talk trash back and forth with.

I'm old timer like you so I love paying the old SWC teams.

Good post and Guns Up to y'all (after we win Sat.!)

1.  Yeh Natalie Maines can go... well I don't like her much.
2.  How's the rainfall in West Texas?  I know Wichita F. was on the verge of completely running out of water and I know Lubbock is close by... anything better for the farmers and ranchers there?
3.  I do miss Tex Tech as a rival, got nothing bad to say about them or their fans.  But to hell with the SWC.

Absolutely correct there.  Also, what some of your younger fans may not know is that in the old Southworst conference as it became near it's death...the private schools were killing us.  Exception Baylor.  Back then the schools would keep the most of the gate...the money made by ticket purchases back then.  So when Tech or Arkansas would travel to say Houston, which was by air usually and they would have to stay overnight...then the day of the game...there would only be 20,000 in Rice Stadium and 80% were Arkansas or Tech fans.  The other SWC schools were much closer proximity to Houston and could bus their team down and bus back.  Much cheaper than what Arkansas and Tech had to do.  So Arkansas offered Rice to play in Little Rock than go to Houston.  So Arkansas "Road" game at Rice was in Little Rock, while the true home game would be in Fayetteville.  Win Win for Arkansas and Rice as Rice made more money going to Little Rock for their Home Game than having it at Rice.  TCU and SMU were horrible and University of Houston was a commuter school and their fan bases were non existent back then.

Tech, Texas, A&M or Arkansas traveled to TCU SMU or Houston, there was usually more fans for the visiting school than what they would have in their own stands.

When the BIG 12 formed I was excited to go to a conference with all but one private school.  Big alumni bases and such.  I have to think Arkansas felt the same way when going to the SEC.  I can remember playing Rice in Lubbock and they would have 0 fans in the stands.  They didn't even send cheerleaders.  Sad.

I wish the SEC fans that visit (troll) this board were half as classy as RaiderRed. Welcome, thanks for the info, and I can't wait for Saturday! Hope to see you in the game thread.

RaiderRed are y'all going to throw tortillas at us if we win?  Ha!

I will back RR on the tailgating.  Don't get so torn down on  Friday night so you are unable to soak up TT's tailgating.  You might have to dodge a tumbleweed or an armadillo but it is a good time.

I think it will be a close game that can go either way.  Hope to see you there RaiderRed I will be out to the stadium early.

Exceptional post!! I feel that the two schools w the Petrino and Leach deals are going through similar times.

Yeah she was pretty much excommunicated from here as well.  LOL

Well, luckily Lubbock is pretty progressive and thought ahead.  We built a beautiful resivoir-lake off the caprock, about 40 miles SE of Lubbock.  It came online about 2 years ago during the height of the drought.  Though the drought hasn't broken we have seen better rainfall this year.  We are about 70" behind over the last 4 years.

3.  I do miss Tex Tech as a rival, got nothing bad to say about them or their fans.  But to hell with the SWC.

DITTO!

RaiderRed, you are the type of opposing fan that we welcome to our boards.  You are full of information regarding the school and the general area.  It has been a loooong time since we met on the gridiron and we certainly hope that after next year, it will not be the last.

Welcome and thanks for the info.

That is a silly tradition that has still stuck around.  If the tortillas go up it is usually only at kickoff.  I haven't ever seen them thrown at the opposing team.

Or one of these at the stadium on game day.  LOL

Losing gracefully isn't taught in second-tier programs. See Arkansas, Cincinnati, et al.

Of all our former SEC foes, TT was by far my favorite.

And I especially became a Red Raider fan during Leach's top years as they were beating the corksoakers OU and UT that I wanted beat so badly.

Not a fan of the current cover boy who is their coach -- too much him and too little about his team.

I'd say 41-28 would be a solid prediction.  Hogs, of course!

I'm sure you meant SWC foes and Tech was my favorite, too.  Never cared for Leach, though.

Thanks for the info Raider!

Wow so much better than any LSU, Bama or Gus fans post.

I apologize for them.  They are usually students that get on there and say trash.  Some Tech fans are a little nervous of what the year will deliver if we don't shore up the run defense!

Lubbock is always literally a breath of fresh air. Been there many times.  Never been anywhere flatter that's for sure.

RedRaider, nice post as pointed out many times already.  My son played baseball at Tech a few years ago so this informative post brought back many good memories.  Good luck on Saturday.  Guns up!

Can't figure out if RR is the Mayor, Pres of Chamber or TT SID or possibly all three but good post.   Think our Hogs will most likely make it feel like the old SWC days before we leave Lubbock.   Best of Luck with the rest of the year though.

Thanks for the info man sincerely but Holy Lord that was a long post.

I feel like I just read an entire Wikipedia page about TTech and Lubbock.

Anyway good luck and WPS!!!

Fond memories of our old SWC days, but I like being in the SEC

I was at that last game in 1991 as a member of the Razorback band. Back then the band only went to one road game a year so a bunch of us paid our own way and bought kazoos to play. Some the the TT band allowed us to crash at their places when we got there. Great experience as far as I recall.
