Reexamining the booms and busts of Alabama's landmark 2008 recruiting class

QuoteWe begin our series looking back at the real impact of Alabama signing classes with the first group fully recruited by Nick Saban.

The 2008 haul was the catalyst --

Eight years down the road, a handful are among the NFL elite. Of the 32 signees in 2008, 12 were drafted. Five were first-rounders. And a total of 12 made rosters.

Perhaps the most interesting aspect of the retrospective is the original player rankings from the year. 247Sports' assessment got it right with Julio Jones at No. 3 overall, but were a little off on Marcell Dareus (No. 212) and Mark Ingram (No. 218). And tight end Brad Smelley, who went on to be a seventh-round draft pick, was No. 948.

A few of the players never made it to Tuscaloosa. Recruits like Melvin Ray and Destin Hood opted for pro baseball careers instead. Years later, Ray turned up in Bryant-Denny Stadium, but as a receiver for Auburn (2012-15).

Players are listed in the order of their 247Sports composite ranking.

5-stars

-- 3. Julio Jones, WR: The cornerstone of this program-changing class
-- 21. Tyler Love, OL: One of the five-star recruits in the group, Love never worked his way into the starting lineup.
-- 26. B.J. Scott WR/ATH: One of the bigger names on signing day, the five-star recruiting profile was never fully realized in Tuscaloosa. He appeared in 15 games as a defensive back

4-stars

52. Jerrell Harris LB: A Parade All-American from Gadsden, Harris never became a regular starter with the Tide.
74. Mark Barron, DB: A starter by 2009, Barron became one of the more impactful members of the Alabama defense in the Saban era. After starting 38 games, gaining unanimous All-American status and winning two national titles, Barron was the No. 7 overall pick of the 2012 NFL draft to Tampa Bay.
95. Courtney Upshaw, LB: Quickly developed into one of the better pass-rushing outside linebackers in the Saban era... Baltimore took him in the second round of the 2012 draft with the 35th overall pick.
103. Alonzo Mr. Lawrence, CB: Left Alabama after the 2009 season having never played in a game.
149. Barrett Jones, OL: Became a four-year starter, won three national titles. Consensus All-American in 2012, won Rimington Award (top center) and was drafted in fourth round by St. Louis Rams.
181. Star Jackson, QB: A top recruit from South Florida, Jackson never won the starting job.
183. Melvin Ray, WR: Never played at Alabama because he pursued a professional baseball career. Eventually landed with Auburn's football program
189. Michael Williams, TE/DL: Went the tight end route and it worked out quite well. By his senior season, Williams was the primary receiving threat at his position. He remains in the NFL after Detroit drafted him in the seventh round in 2013.
212. Marcell Dareus, DL: After playing a small role in 2008, Dareus established his legacy a year later. The defensive MVP of the BCS championship win over Texas... Buffalo picked him No. 3 overall (tied for best in Saban era) in the 2011 NFL draft. Success continued in the NFL as a two-time Pro Bowler with the Bills.
213. Devonta Bolton, TE/WR: Did not qualify academically and enrolled in East Mississippi Community College.
218. Mark Ingram, RB: The 2009 Heisman Trophy winner was only a three-star (No. 57 running back) according to Scout.com.
234. Chris Jordan, RB: Moved to linebacker but didn't find a spot as a starter as injuries limited opportunity.
231. Damion Square, DL: A starter in every game as a junior and senior, he played key roles in consecutive national-title seasons of 2011 and 2012... re-signed by the Chargers in March.
234. Chris Jackson, WR: Played in 12 games, mostly on special teams as a freshman, before transferring to Georgia Tech.
249. Robby Green, DB: Played first two seasons at Alabama, starting six games as a sophomore in the 2009 national title run. Suspended by the NCAA before 2010 season.
257. Dont'a Hightower, LB: A true-freshman breakout star in 2008, a severe knee injury ended his 2009 season and impacted 2010. By 2011, Hightower was a consensus All-American as a leader in arguably the best defense in Alabama history. The New England Patriots took him in the first round of the 2012 draft with the No. 25 pick.

3-stars

36. (JUCO) Terrence Mt. Cody, DL: A junior college transfer, Cody quickly became one of the more popular players. Once tipping the scales north of 400 pounds... Cody was sentenced to nine months in jail earlier this year following a conviction in an animal cruelty case.
332. John Michael Boswell, OL: Played four seasons on special teams and as a backup guard.
346. Destin Hood, WR: Never played at Alabama after the Washington Nationals picked him in the second round
364. Brandon Lewis, DL: After initially failing to qualify academically and two seasons at East Mississippi Community College, Lewis played in seven Alabama games in 2011 before deciding to skip his final season
390. Glenn Harbin, DL: After redshirting in 2008, Harbin didn't see playing time in 2009 or 2010. He moved on to join the Crimson Tide baseball team in 2011
393. Robert Lester, DB: Lester became a second-team All-American by his sophomore season. His eight interceptions tied for the SEC best. A steady safety from that point on, Lester stared for the 2011 and 2012 national championship teams. After going undrafted, Lester went from the Carolina Panthers' practice squad to the starting lineup by Week 3 of the 2013 season. He was cut before the 2014 season and bounced back to the practice squad.
425. Ivan Matchett, RB: After redshiring in 2008, Matchett received a medical scholarship the following season.
471. Jermaine Preyear, RB: Grayshirted in 2008 and transferred to Alabama State before the 2009 season.
565. Undra Billingsley, DL: Moved between defensive line and tight end without finding much playing time at either position.
757. Wesley Neighbors, DB: A two-generation Alabama football legacy, Neighbors saw limited action. He remains with the Tide currently as an analyst.
948. Brad Smelley, ATH: A high school quarterback in Tuscaloosa, Smelley developed into a tight end/H-back at Alabama. Playing time increased over the seasons as he became the primary H-back on the 2011 national title team. His career-best game came in the Iron Bowl with six catches, 86 yards including a 35-yard touchdown. The Cleveland Browns took him in the seventh round (247th overall) in the 2012 draft.
NR Corey Smith, K: A limited role in 2008 led to his transfer closer to home at West Virginia.
NR Kerry Murphy, DL: One of the best defensive linemen in the country coming from Hoover High School, injuries kept Murphy from equaling that success in college. He played a limited role in 2009 but injuries ended his career in 2010. Murphy graduated from Alabama in the summer of 2013.

Bama's 2009 signing class avoided major busts, sent 11 to NFL draft

QuoteSaban's second full recruiting class at Alabama was practically an all-or-nothing group.

Of the 27 signees, 11 were drafted by the NFL. Another 10 either transferred or left the program with eligibility remaining. There were fewer big-name busts than the landmark 2008 class.

Trent Richardson was the bell cow as the No. 4 overall prospect, according to 247Sports. Dre Kirkpatrick, Nico Johnson and D.J. Fluker also went on to the NFL after getting five-star ratings as high school seniors.

Five of the 11 draft picks went in the first round, led by Richardson's No. 3 selection in 2012.

Kirkpatrick, Fluker, James Carpenter and Chance Warmack would go on to be first-round draft picks. Warmack was the most undervalued recruit -- checking in at No. 453 in the 247Sports rankings before becoming a top-10 draft pick.

More importantly, this class was the most decorated in terms of hardware. A player who stuck around four years was part of three national championship teams.

5-star recruits
6. Trent Richardson, RB
13. Dre Kirkpatrick, DB
17. Nico Johnson, LB
28. D.J Fluker, OL

4 stars
18 JuCo. James Carpenter, OL: He started immediately, taking Andre Smith's job at left tackle. It was good enough to earn a first-round draft pick two years later...

81. AJ McCarron, QB: The lone passer in the group went on to win three national titles...

87. Tana Patrick, LB: Patrick never started a game...

115. Kendall Kelly, WR: ended up taking a medical redshirt without seeing the field.

124. Eddie Lacy, RB: future NFL Rookie of the Year...

173. Rod Woodson, S: After playing a limited role as a true freshman, Woodson transferred in 2010 to Division II North Alabama.

176. Michael Bowman, WR: He was suspended in 2011 and never played another game for the Tide.

189. Darrington Sentimore, DL: Made nine tackles as a redshirt freshman before heading to Gulf Coast Community College after a suspension at Alabama. Eventually, Sentimore landed at Tennessee.

215. Brandon Moore, DL: Made four tackles in three games in 2010 but left the program the following spring after a suspension.

230. William Ming, DE: Played in one game

267. Kenny Bell, WR: An important receiver in his final three Alabama seasons

3 stars
308. Petey Smith, LB: After struggling to climb the depth chart in two Alabama seasons, Smith transferred to Holmes Community College

323. Kevin Norwood, WR: The first of a few overachievers, Norwood gradually developed into one of the top receivers at Alabama... He won a Super Bowl ring with Seattle.

352. Ed Stinson, DE: A starter as a junior and senior, the south Florida product quietly had a big career in Tuscaloosa. Arizona drafted him in the fifth round in 2014 and Stinson's been part of the rotation since.

382. Quinton Dial, DL: The Clay-Chalkville product didn't begin his Alabama career until 2011 after a detour to East Mississippi Community College. He played key roles on the 2011 and 2012 national championship teams -- his only two seasons at Alabama. San Francisco drafted Dial in the fifth round in 2013. By 2015, Dial started 15 games and made a total of 59 tackles with 2 ½ sacks.

439. Jonathan Atchison, LB: Played a limited role from 2010-12 before opting against a fifth-year senior season in 2013.

440 Chris Bonds, DL: Followed a similar path as Atchison. Playing time was minimal in three seasons after a redshirt and Bonds didn't come back for Year 5.

453. Chance Warmack, OL: Easily the biggest miss for the recruiting services, Warmack developed into one of the best offensive guards in college football. Before the Tennessee Titans drafted him No. 10 overall in 2013, Warmack became a key member of the best Alabama offensive lines in recent history. He was a unanimous All-American in 2012 and was flagged just twice in 732 career snaps. That's not bad for the No. 26-ranked guard in the 2009 recruiting class.

496. Anthony Steen, OL: The other starting guard on the 2012 national title team also exceeded expectations.

553. Anthony Orr, DL: Never found his way into the regular rotation

584. Kellen Williams, OL: After redshirting and two seasons as a reserve, Williams got a 2013 start against Colorado State

616. Darius McKeller, OL: Transferred to South Alabama

689. Mike Marrow, RB: Left Alabama for Eastern Michigan by 2010 before eventually landing at Nebraska.

Scarblog: Since Gus Malzahn returned as head coach - not counting the 2016 class that has yet to suit up - Auburn has signed and played seven five-star recruits

Not one of them has earned postseason honors for first-team All-SEC or first-team All-America

QuoteNot 2013 five-stars Montravius Adams or Carl Lawson. Not 2014 five-stars Thomas, Duke Williams or Tre Williams. Not 2015 five-stars Byron Cowart or Jovon Robinson.

That's a high standard, but shouldn't much be expected from the top-rated signees?

Those players have contributed in varying ways, and six of the seven have been either part-time or full-time starters, but for a variety of reasons ranging from injuries to attitude and behavior to opportunity, none of them has completely lived up to the billing that accompanied him to Auburn.

QuoteDT Montravius Adams, ★★★★★
What happened: A starter who struggled to be consistent in his first two seasons, he has developed into a force in the middle of the defensive line. A breakout season is within reach... He TFL in '15...

DE Carl Lawson, ★★★★
A hip injury put him on the sideline. He never was quite the same in 2015, and after sitting out the entire 2014 season after an ACL tear, we're still waiting to see a fully developed, completely healthy Lawson...

DE Elijah Daniel, ★★★★
What happened: He played two seasons, accumulated 3.5 sacks and was arrested in the spring of 2015 before transferring to Murray State [Houston Nutt, Zeke Pike]...

WR Tony Stevens, ★★★★
What happened: He has caught 19 passes in three seasons, including 13 for 174 yards and one touchdown in 2015.

RB Jovon Robinson, ★★★★
What happened: Back at Auburn for a second time, he ran for at least 90 yards in five of the last six games as he slowly took over for Peyton Barber.

QB Jeremy Johnson, ★★★★
What happened: Everything looked set for a stellar final two seasons on the Plains. His performance against Arkansas in 2014 set the stage for high expectations. Throwing for 200-plus yards to go along with two touchdowns in the first half opened eyes, and as he continued to sit on the bench and wait for his turn behind Nick Marshall, the possibilities seemed endless for the big-armed, big-bodied quarterback. Something happened, however, and no one can quite explain it. He threw six interceptions in the first three games — most of them directly to open defenders — and was benched after three weeks. He returned to the field when Sean White was injured, but he was never quite the same.

DT Ben Bradley, ★★★★
What happened: The junior college transfer finished with 36 tackles in two seasons, including one sack. He never cracked the starting lineup...

RB Rudy Ford, ★★★★
What happened: He led Auburn with 118 tackles last season.

WR Jason Smith, ★★★★
What happened: He tried to compete against Jeremy Johnson for the quarterback job when he arrived on campus in 2015, but he quickly pulled out of the competition and moved to receiver. He caught 13 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns in 2015.

WR Earnest Robinson, ★★★★
What happened: The 2013 Under Armour All-American selection never made it to Auburn's campus and went to East Mississippi Community College.

QB Nick Marshall, ★★★
What happened: Auburn's best return on the recruiting trail of the Gus Malzahn era. He broke records at Auburn, rushed for 1,866 yards, threw for 4,508 yards in his two-year career and led the Tigers to an SEC title and national runner-up finish in his first year as starter in 2013. [Transferred from Georgia after legal problems.]

LB Cameron Toney, ★★★
What happened: Five total tackles (no solo stops) in two years. He didn't get many mentions this spring, either.

OG Deon Mix, ★★★
What happened: A late steal from State in 2013, Deon mix has played in only a handful of games.

RB Peyton Barber, ★★★
What happened: Injuries opened the door for Barber, who took over and finished with 1,016 yards and 13 touchdowns.

CB Kam Melton, ★★★
What happened: He played in three games in 2013, suffered a knee injury and sat out the 2014 season before transferring to Troy.

WR Dominic Walker, ★★★
What happened: He redshirted in 2013 and never played in 2014. He then transferred to Copiah-Lincoln Community College.

S Mackenro Alexander, ★★★
What happened: Brother of Clemson star Mackensie Alexander, he had four tackles in 2013, did not play in 2014 and landed at Northeast Mississippi Community College.

RB Cameron Artis-Payne, ★★★
What happened: The junior college transfer got his shot after Tre' Mason's stellar season in 2013 and did not disappoint with 1,608 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2014. Now playing for the Carolina Panthers.

S Khari Harding, ★★★
What happened: Four total tackles at Auburn before he decided to transfer to Tulsa.

LB Kenny Flowers, ★★★
What happened: Coaches expected him to compete for a starting job as a junior college transfer in 2013. Never happened. Finished his Auburn career with nine tackles.

OG Devonte Danzey, ★★★
What happened: The junior college transfer, a senior, finally appears will start at center for the Tigers in 2016.

K Daniel Carlson, ★★★
What happened: The Lou Groza finalist a year ago was one of only three kickers to boot four field goals of 51 yards or more in 2015. He broke an Auburn record with 16 straight field goals made and hit a career-long field goal of 56 yards.

CB Marcus Davis, ★★★
What happened: He has proven to be a great punt returner, but we're still waiting or Auburn to stretch the field with him at receiver.

P Jimmy Hutchinson, ★★★
What happened: He punted for one season — nine times — and called it quits.

S Brandon King, ★★★
What happened: He played two seasons, accumulating 19 tackles and forcing one fumble. He might be the most confounding member of this recruiting class as he has since found a home with the New England Patriots, where he has received some good feedback. As for Auburn, things never seemed to pan out.

QuoteRB Roc Thomas, ★★★★★
Oxford (Ala.) High School alum rushed for 261 yards and a touchdown on 43 carries last season, and he left for Jacksonville State to play for his former high school coach. Thomas wasn't happy about his role with the team, which figured to be more involved at slot receiver in 2016.

LB Tre' Williams, ★★★★★
Elevated to a key contributor and three-time starter as a sophomore.

OG Braden Smith, ★★★★
He started the final game of his freshman season.

WR D'haquille Williams, ★★★★
He exploded on the scene as the nation's No. 1 player out of the junior college ranks, recording 730 receiving yards in 10 games during his first season. He was nothing but trouble off the field after that, and also ended the season of backup center Xavier Dampeer, whose jaw was broken by Williams' hook. He played a factor in Auburn's downfall in 2015. [Currently in the NFL.]

CB Nick Ruffin, ★★★★
He battled through consistency issues in 2015 under Will Muschamp.

DE Justin Thornton, ★★★★
A non-factor in his first two seasons.

CB Kalvaraz Bessent, ★★★★
He left the team after one season and transferred to Eastern Arizona College.

CB Stephen Roberts, ★★★★
He didn't get much of a shot from Will Muschamp's defensive staff last season until injuries forced their hand. Roberts shined when given the chance and started the final four games at safety.

QB Sean White, ★★★★
He was forced into action four weeks into the season against State because of Jeremy Johnson's horrible start to the year (he co-led the nation with six interceptions through three games), and had some prolific games passing (especially against Arkansas), but he finished with only one touchdown pass against four interceptions and the Tigers' red-zone issues continued. He's the leader for the starting job heading into the summer.

DT Dontavius Russell, ★★★★
He had 42 tackles, including 4.5 for losses last season.

DE DaVonte Lambert, ★★★★
Junior college transfer finished with 24 tackles and one sack in his final season with the Tigers. He led the team with 3.5 sacks in 2014.

DE Andrew Williams, ★★★★
Still waiting to see if this rising sophomore can contribute.

S Derrick Moncrief, ★★★★
He started one game and had 27 tackles, a pass breakup and forced a fumble last season. He transferred to Oklahoma State.

ATH Stanton Truitt, ★★★
He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury against Arkansas last season.

RB Kam Pettway, ★★★
He moved to fullback and has had success at the position, where he and Chandler Cox will split time (and some carries) this upcoming season.

LB DeShaun Davis, ★★★
He will compete for a starting job in 2016.

CB Joseph Turner, ★★★
He was the final signee in the 2014 signing class and left the program before ever seeing the field.

ATH Myron Burton, ★★★
He was the MVP of Auburn's A-Day game in 2015, catching seven passes for 124 yards and one touchdown, but leaving (sic) the team before the season opener.

TE Chris Laye, ★★★
He made three appearances in 2015 and was expected to contend for the starting job at tight end in 2016, but left the team in February.

DT Devaroe Lawrence, ★★★
Like Russell, a great addition to the rotation at defensive tackle. He finished with 31 tackles, including two for losses, last season.

ATH Markell Boston, ★★★
He redshirted in 2014, did not play in 2015 but was the A-Day leader with seven tackles in the spring.

DE Raashed Kennion, ★★★
Carl Lawson's backup at the Buck position finished with eight tackles and zero sacks in eight games. He did have three quarterback hurries...

C Xavier Dampeer, ★★★
He survived several years as a backup — and D'haquille Williams' punch — to become the starter at center this offseason. Offensive line coach Herb Hand loves Dampeer's ability and the senior is finally getting his shot to be a starter after living life as a backup behind Reese Dismukes and Austin Golson.

LS Ike Powell, ★★
He received a scholarship in January 2015.

CB Michael Sherwood
They call him Dirty Mike. The former walk-on recorded two tackles and one pass breakup last season.

2014 recruiting class

Rankings: 6th nationally; 4th SEC

Portfolio: The highest-ranked class yet in the Gus Malzahn era. Two of Auburn's most productive and sought-after players (D'haquille Williams and Thomas) are no longer on the team and never lived up to expectations with the Tigers. Meanwhile, it's the 3-star and other underrated signees who have stepped up to make a name for themselves early in their Auburn careers. The jury is still out on this class.

QuoteLook at recruiting class of 2015

Byron Cowart, ★★★★★
What happened: The nation's top defensive prospect had every chance to prove himself worthy of the hype. He played in all 13 games a true freshman but finished with six tackles.

RB Jovon Robinson, ★★★★
What happened: He had to wait his turn — attitude issues and a foot injury slowed him at the start of the season — but he finished with a flourish, rushing for 90 yards or more in five of the last six games

DE Prince Tega Wanogho Jr., ★★★★
What happened: He was recovering from a major leg injury suffered last spring while playing basketball and has bulked up

WR Jason Smith, ★★★★
What happened: He tried to compete against Jeremy Johnson for the quarterback job when he arrived on campus in 2015, but he quickly pulled out of the competition and moved to receiver. He caught 13 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns

LB Jeffery Holland, ★★★★
What happened: Jeff Holland did not disappoint in his freshman debut with 13 tackles, including 2.5 for losses

WR Darius Slayton (DSlay), ★★★★
What happened: He did not play as a redshirt player

S Jordan Colbert, ★★★★
What happened: He sat on the bench and then left the team, transferring to Holmes Community College.

LB Darrell Williams, ★★★★
What happened: He played in nine games, mostly on special teams, as a freshman

WR Ryan Davis, ★★★★
What happened: He touched the ball once and he gained 28 yards on a running play.

LB Richard McBryde, ★★★★
What happened: He did not play last season and has some catching up to do at linebacker

OG Tyler Carr, ★★★★
What happened: He did not play

OG Marquel Harrell, ★★★★
What happened: He will work with the second-team unit at offensive guard this season

C Kaleb Kim, ★★★★
What happened: He, too, will be a member of the second-team offensive line

LB Montavious Atkinson, ★★★★
What happened: He played 10 games, lined up at safety, picked up a tackle against San Jose State

ATH Tim Irvin, ★★★★
What happened: He played in nine games and had 18 tackles, but said he wasn't comfortable with the Tigers and decided to leave school to seek an opportunity elsewhere.

CB Javaris Davis, ★★★★
What happened: He redshirted as a freshman. He played running back and receive in high school, but will be a defensive back for the Tigers.

CB Carlton Davis, ★★★★
What happened: The standout of the class so far, he was a member of the SEC All-Freshman team after he was elevated to starter in 2015. He led the team with three interceptions and had 56 tackles. [Off season incident landed on Fulmer Cup.]

OT Bailey Sharp, ★★★★
What happened: Another redshirt offensive lineman who could see time on the second-team unit

QB Tyler Queen, ★★★
What happened: Two surgeries since he arrived at Auburn, including shoulder surgery following spring practice this year. He is not a contender in Auburn's battle

DT Jaunta'vius Johnson, ★★★
What happened: He did not play last season

DT Maurice Swain, ★★★
What happened: He'll be a factor in the lineup this coming season, but how much playing time will he see?

TE Jalen Harris, ★★★
What happened: He really has no competition since Chris Laye transferred in February, but the tight end has never been a big part of Gus Malzahn's offense.

OT Mike Horton, ★★★
What happened: He impressed during his freshman season and even jumped up to backup during fall camp

CB Jeremiah Dinson, ★★★
What happened: He played in nine games as a freshman and finished with 15 tackles and forced one fumble. He tore three knee ligaments and injured his shoulder on a vicious hit against Texas A&M late in the season. He is still recovering, but coaches expect him back. That's not the only obstacle he faces. He was arrested in the offseason on a misdemeanor second-degree marijuana possession charge, but it appears punishment within the football program will not be substantial.

P Ian Shannon, ★★★
What happened: He was redshirted and did not play

2015 recruiting class

Rankings: 8th nationally; 5th SEC

Portfolio: Only one player has left the team so far, bringing our total number of departures to 22 since the class of 2012. The breakout star is cornerback Carlton Davis

Revisiting Auburn's 2012 signing class

QuoteOT Avery Young, ★★★★
Portfolio: He started in 36 of 37 games in which he appeared. More importantly, Young was versatile and capable of moving between guard and tackle during some of the best rushing seasons in Auburn history. He was an All-SEC pick by the media in the preseason of his junior season and declared for the NFL draft in January, but went undrafted after struggling in pre-draft workouts. The New Orleans Saints signed him as a free agent.

TE Ricky Parks, ★★★★
Portfolio: A complete bust for the Tigers, he's still trying to make a career at Southern Miss. Auburn dismissed him in 2013 and allowed him to return in early 2014 before booting him again after spring practices

OT Jordan Diamond, ★★★★
Portfolio: His Auburn career was filled with more setbacks than standout performances. He finished as a second- and third-team offensive lineman this spring. He has since transferred to Miami (Ohio) as a graduate

WR Ricardo Louis, ★★★★
Portfolio: A receiver whose NFL career could be better than it was at Auburn, Louis managed a career-high 716 yards and three touchdowns receiving in his senior season. He played second fiddle to Duke Williams and Sammie Coates for two years, even though he was the fastest receiver on the team. He will forever be remembered for his catch in the Prayer at Jordan-Hare to beat Georgia

CB Joshua Holsey, ★★★★
Portfolio: He has one interception in his career but injuries have kept him from living up to his full potential

DT Tyler Nero, ★★★★
Portfolio: He was rated the nation's 22nd-best defensive tackle, played in one game against Western Carolina in 2013 and had his playing career cut short during a scary incident in the spring of 2014. He collapsed during a spring practice, was rushed to a hospital and a medical issue (still not released) has kept him from playing football.

OT Patrick Miller, ★★★★
Portfolio: He started 20 games at right tackle, including nine as a true freshman, but left following the 2014 season for the NFL draft. He was not drafted but has since found a home with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

OT Shane Callahan, ★★★★
Portfolio: He played two games for Auburn before he asked for and was granted a release to play at Colorado

LB Cassanova McKinzy, ★★★★
Portfolio: The three-year starter at Auburn was a workhorse for the Tigers, compiling 258 tackles, including 29.5 stops for losses while forcing three fumbles.

QB Zeke Pike, ★★★★
Portfolio: The biggest bust in Auburn's 2012 recruiting class. Zeke Pike never saw the field and was dismissed in June 2012 following an arrest for public intoxication. He transferred to Louisville, barely played at tight end, transferred to Murray State and was later dismissed by the Racers after an arrest on charges of possession of marijuana, drug paraphernalia, resisting arrest and escape. He was arrested in March on a DUI charge, and those charges were later bumped up with possession (cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, prescription drug) and he also had a firearm in his vehicle.

OG Alex Kozan, ★★★
Portfolio: An All-SEC selection as a true freshman at left guard, he hit a snag with back surgery and missed the 2014 season. His stamina was not quite at 100 percent in 2015

CB Jonathan Jones, ★★★
Portfolio: He was a two-year starter and came up big in big moments, finishing with seven interceptions. He was a first-team member of the coaches' All-SEC team as a senior and blazed the NFL Combine with a 40-yard dash timed at 4.33 seconds. He has since signed with the New England Patriots.

LB JaViere Mitchell, ★★★
Portfolio: He struggled to find playing time, but he made some big plays during his career. He had 39 career tackles and one sack. He left the team in the spring.

CB T.J. Davis, ★★★
Portfolio: He had six tackles in 2014, played mostly as the fourth cornerback off the bench and suffered a tear to an ACL in March 2015, forcing him to miss the entire season.

DE Gimel President, ★★★
Portfolio: He had flashes of brilliance but never quite hit his stride with the Tigers. He transferred to Illinois

QB Jonathan Wallace, ★★★
Portfolio: He attempted to salvage the disastrous 2012 season when Gene Chizik threw him into the fire as a true freshman near the end of the season, but could never win the starting job when Gus Malzahn returned as head coach. He moved to receiver, where he drew comparisons to Kodi Burns' move in the 2010 national championship season, but he caught only one pass for 18 yards (in 2014). He's now a graduate assistant with the Tigers

OT Will Adams, ★★★
Portfolio: He never could quite crack the rotation at Auburn, so he transferred to Boise State after the 2015 season.

OT Robert Leff, ★★★
Portfolio: He stayed true to himself and finally broke through this spring as the starter at right tackle

2012 recruiting class

Rankings: 11th nationally; 4th SEC

Portfolio: Eight of the 18 players were either booted from Auburn or left the program. That's a staggering number and one which may help explain the depth issues in 2015 and 2016. The true stars of the class proved to be Louis, McKinzy, Jones, Kozan, Holsey and Young — each with varying degrees of success without a breakout star.

Revisiting the best SEC football recruits in recent memory (maybe ever)

QuoteDE Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina, Class of 2011
Spurrier keeping the nation's consensus top prospect in-state was a tremendous recruiting coup. It's no coincidence that during Clowney's three years in Columbia, South Carolina went 33-6, the best stretch in program history.

Sure, his junior year production (three sacks) did not match what was accomplished during the previous two seasons (21 total sacks), but the fearsome pass-rusher's mere presence forced opposing offenses to restructure game plans around him.

Where is he now: The NFL hasn't been as kind to Mr. Clowney...

DE Robert Nkemdiche, Ole Miss, Class of 2013
Rebels' 2013 recruiting class was superb, and Nkemdiche — also a consensus No. 1 prospect — became the headliner in a huge signing day shocker.

As with Clowney and the 'Cocks, Ole Miss experienced something of a football renaissance during Nkemdiche's time in Oxford. 6-foot-4, 300-pound terror never amassed eye-popping stats, was never his role as a 4-3 defensive tackle. He clogged running lanes, drew double-teams, took plays off and made everyone around him look better.

Where is he now: Despite some major off-field shenanigans that reportedly involved synthetic marijuana use, Nkemdiche still went 29th overall.

DE Ronald Powell, Florida, Class of 2010
A pair of torn ACLs derailed Powell's college career in 2012, forcing him to accept a medical redshirt. He started eight games in his final year on campus, recording four sacks and seven tackles for loss, but never entirely lived up to his billing.

Where is he now: Powell became a fifth-round draft pick of the New Orleans Saints but was cut before the 2015 season.

QB Brock Berlin, Florida, Class of 2000
How he fared: He arrived at Florida a universally-acclaimed high school prospect, perhaps the Jacob Eason of his time, but quickly found himself riding the pine behind Rex Grossman. He attempted all of 87 passes in two years with the Gators before transferring to hated in-state rival Miami. He went 2-0 against Florida and handed his former school its final loss of the Ron Zook era.

RB Leonard Fournette, LSU, Class of 2014
How he fared: Fournette just set LSU single-season rushing records for yards and touchdowns, among several other accolades earned during his stellar sophomore campaign, and enters 2016 second to only Clemson's Deshaun Watson on the preseason Heisman Trophy odds board.

OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Alabama, Class of 2011
How he fared: Kouandjio was one of those rare offensive linemen to see the field as a true freshman, and for good reason. The 6-foot-6, 310-pound left tackle was and remains a physical specimen.

In each of Kouandjio's three years on campus, Alabama ranked top 25 nationally in rushing offense while collectively allowing fewer than 25 sacks.

Where he is now: Buffalo selected Kouandjio 44th overall in the 2014 NFL Draft. He has since played in 13 games but started just two for the Bills.

OT Andre Smith, Alabama, Class of 2006
How he fared: Smith signed on with 'Bama in Mike Shula's last year as coach and immediately saw the field, becoming just the sixth true freshman in school history to start a season opener. He suited up at left tackle in all 13 games, led the offensive line with 62 knockdown blocks and even scored a touchdown in the Independence Bowl.

That dominance continued into Smith's sophomore and junior seasons. Although he never saw a title during his time in Tuscaloosa, he delivered on his recruiting hype.

Where he is now: Smith became the sixth overall NFL draft pick and started 73 of 82 games played for the Bungles. He signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings in March.

DE Myles Garrett, A&M, Class of 2014
How he fared: SEC's resident freak athlete, Garrett is well on his way to becoming a top-5 pick in next year's NFL draft. He's already broken Clowney's SEC freshman sack record and led the league in that same category last season (12.5 sacks).

WR Julio Jones, Alabama, Class of 2008
Jones was one of three 5-stars and several more 4-stars secured by Alabama in that recruiting class. In three seasons, he amassed 179 receptions for 2,653 yards and 17 total touchdowns while also excelling as a perimeter run blocker, and he played in a pivotal role in Alabama's perfect 2009 season. He also liked to fish in the Gulf and helped a disabled Bama booster from his hometown of Foley be able to fish in his own boat.

Jones just posted the second-highest single-season receiving total in NFL history (1,871).

RB Bryce Brown, Tennessee, Class of 2009
Brown's recruitment was anything but straightforward. He originally committed to Miami but did not fill out his letter of intent on signing day, and then proceeded to name five finalists in its aftermath — none of which were Miami.

Eventually, he settled on the Vols. He was involved in a preseason incident at Bar Knoxville and the run of his life was his attempt to evade cameras when he was released from county. After spending his freshman year as a backup to Montario Hardesty, logging only 460 yards on 101 carries, Brown transferred to Kansas State. The catch: Tennessee coach Derek Dooley did not grant Brown his release, meaning the running back had to pay to enroll at Kansas State. He touched the ball four times in three games with the Wildcats before jumping ship for the NFL.

QuoteQUARTERBACK

When it comes to Texas quarterbacks, the 42 total SEC signees is not the only impressive thing. Their quality is, too.

Included in the group are a Heisman Trophy winner (Texas A&M's Johnny Manziel), a No. 1 overall draft pick (Georgia's Matthew Stafford) and other prolific starters like Arkansas' Ryan Mallett, Texas A&M's Ryan Tannehill, Alabama's Greg McElroy and Ole Miss' Jevan Snead.

Although there are some busts among the state of Florida's 29 quarterback signees, the group also includes SEC all-time leading passer Aaron Murray (Georgia) and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow, who helped Florida win BCS crowns in 2006 and 2008.

Also of note, California (12 QB signees) fared better than seven SEC states.

RUNNING BACK

Florida and Georgia trade the lead for the rest of the offensive positions, and they're neck-and-neck here.

Both states have churned out unbelievable backfield talent over the last decade. Among Florida's standouts are Trent Richardson (Alabama), Tre Mason (Auburn), Alex Collins (Arkansas), Dexter McCluster (Ole Miss), Sony Michel (Georgia) and Florida Gators Kelvin Taylor, Matt Jones and Mike Gillislee.

WIDE RECEIVER

Athlete-rich Florida holds a substantial lead here, although the number of star wideouts from the state is relatively small. Alabama's all-everything receiver Amari Cooper is the most notable name, but there are a lot of busts on the list, as well.

TIGHT END

Georgia holds a sizable lead here, producing 32 tight end signees and sending them to 10 different conference schools. Among them: Evan Engram (Ole Miss) and the late Philip Lutzenkirchen (Auburn).

Arkansas, the least-populous SEC state, has also turned out more SEC tight ends than most of its counterparts, tying Alabama for fourth with 15.

OFFENSIVE LINE

Nestled behind the big three here is Mississippi, the second-least-populous SEC state.

It helps that the state has a network of junior college football programs that aid the state's linemen in their development, but the talent is also there in the high school ranks. Among the notable offensive linemen to come out of Mississippi are Mississippi State's Derek Sherrod and Gabe Jackson and Ole Miss' John Jerry.

Leading the way is Georgia, which produced a number of future college and pro stars up front.

Marq Burnett: Revisiting Alabama's 2015 recruiting class

Quote(Guys who are no longer on the team because they were dismissed or transfer were not included — Desherrius Flowers, Shawn Burgess-Becker, Adonis Thomas and Jonathan Taylor).

Calvin Ridley, 5-star wide receiver
Portfolio: According to the 247Sports Composite, Ridley was the highest rated member of Alabama's 2015 recruiting class, and the South Florida native has quickly lived up to his 5-star billing.

Kendall Sheffield, 5-star cornerback
Portfolio: Sheffield redshirted his first season in Tuscaloosa. Going forward, it's unclear where he fits into the rotation.

Blake Barnett, 5-star quarterback
Portfolio: Coming out of the spring, Barnett is still very much in the mix for the starting quarterback job. It wouldn't be a stretch to say that he's second in line

Da'Ron Payne, 5-star defensive lineman
Portfolio: Despite all of the depth Alabama had up front last season, Payne managed to step in and carve out a role for himself, and even earned a start against Arkansas.

Minkah Fitzpatrick, 5-star defensive back
Portfolio: True freshman don't often step in and play big roles in Saban's secondary from day one, but that's exactly what Fitzpatrick did.

Damien Harris, 5-star running back
Portfolio: Harris has a chance to make a big splash this season as Alabama looks to replace Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry and primary backup Kenyan Drake. Harris and Bo Scarbrough project to be the top two running backs this season, which means Harris should see plenty carries.

The Kentucky native had a strong showing during Alabama's A-Day game, rushing for over 100 yards and earning scrimmage MVP honors.

Deionte Thompson, 4-star safety
Portfolio: Thompson redshirted and spent his first year in Tuscaloosa with the wide receivers despite being recruited as a safety.

But Thompson was back with the defensive backs this spring. Alabama has Eddie Jackson and Ronnie Harrison returning to the fold for this season, but Thompson could compete for that third safety spot in dime packages.

Lester Cotton, 4-star offensive lineman
Portfolio: During the spring, Saban flat out said that Cotton was one of the team's best five offensive linemen. The only problem is finding a place to put him.

Richie Petitbon, 4-star offensive lineman
Portfolio: Petitbon suffered a torn ACL during the spring. He's expected to be sidelined for a while.

Daylon Charlot, 4-star wide receiver
Portfolio: Charlot, like most of Alabama's receivers, is at least behind the top three guys —

Mekhi Brown, 4-star outside linebacker
Portfolio: Brown's problem, like a few others on this list, is that he's at a position with a lot of depth in front of him.

Hale Hentges, 4-star tight end
Portfolio: Hentges played a lot last season as a true freshman and gained a lot of valuable experience. He'll basically be the second tight end (alongside O.J. Howard)

Anfernee "Penny" Jennings, 4-star outside linebacker
Portfolio: Jennings dealt with a back injury (suffered in high school) which slowed his development during his first season.

Ronnie Harrison, 4-star safety
Portfolio: Harrison was basically an extra starter at safety last year, and with Geno Matias-Smith gone, he's the easy choice to start opposite Eddie Jackson this season.

Harrison played in all 15 games and made one start (vs. Texas A&M) while intercepting two passes all last season.

Dallas Warmack, 4-star offensive lineman
Portfolio: Warmack is one of Alabama's young guards pushing for a starting spot along the offensive line. Even if he doesn't earn one, he's a good player to have for depth purposes.

Joshua McMillon, 4-star linebacker
Portfolio: McMillon made the switch from outside to inside linebacker this spring, so it's tough to judge his value.

Brandon Kennedy, 4-star offensive lineman
Portfolio: Kennedy worked at right guard with the first-team offensive line during the spring, and during Alabama's A-Day game. He'll compete with veteran Alphonse Taylor for the starting job.

Christian Bell, 3-star outside linebacker
Portfolio: Bell is another player who is buried on the depth chart.

Keaton Anderson, 3-star linebacker
Portfolio: Anderson has four of five older, more experienced players ahead of him at his position.

Matt Womack, 3-star offensive tackle
Portfolio: Womack won't start this season, but should be around to provide depth.

https://twitter.com/Carvell_AJC/status/750802970158170112

QuoteAlex Collins, 4-star RB
Portfolio: A superstar in every sense for the Razorbacks, Collins turned out to be the best running back recruit in his class (former Alabama Heisman Trophy winner Derrick Henry was listed as an athlete). He rushed for more than 1,000 in each of his three seasons at Arkansas — joining fellow Razorbacks great Darren McFadden and Georgia Heisman winner Herschel Walker as the only SEC players to do so.

Hunter Henry, 4-star TE
Portfolio: Like Collins, Henry turned out to be the best recruit at his position in the 2013 class and left Arkansas with one year of eligibility remaining. He won the John Mackey Award last season as the nation's top tight end, was named a consensus All-American and was twice a first team All-SEC selection.

Denver Kirkland, 4-star OL
Portfolio: Another player who declared for the 2016 NFL Draft after three seasons at Arkansas, Kirkland's college career was much more impactful than his lack of being selected in the draft would suggest.

Austin Allen, 4-star QB
Portfolio: Allen's legacy is still to be determined

Brooks Ellis, 3-star LB
Portfolio: An unquestioned leader entering his senior season at middle linebacker for the Razorbacks, Ellis has started 28 games in his three seasons. He led the team and was ninth in the SEC with 102 tackles last season.

Carroll Washington, 3-star DB
Portfolio: Washington did not contribute much in his two seasons with the Razorbacks after joining the program from Hartnell (Calif.) Community College

Reeve Koehler, 3-star OL
Portfolio: The redshirt sophomore spent last season on the scout team

Myke Tavarres, 3-star LB
Portfolio: He spent just one semester at Arkansas before leaving the program and transferring to Incarnate Word

Martrell Spaight, 3-star LB
Portfolio: Spaight turned out to be a star in 2014, his senior season at Arkansas, after transferring from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College. That season, he was a consensus first team All-SEC selection and had a SEC-best 128 tackles — becoming the first Arkansas player ever to lead the conference in tackles.

Dan Skipper, 3-star OL
Portfolio: Skipper enters his senior season as a preseason third-team All-American and first-team All-SEC selection by Athlon

Damon Mitchell, 3-star QB
Portfolio: Mitchell is a difficult case to evaluate as he's changed positions twice during his time at Arkansas. He came in as a dual-threat quarterback before switching to wide receiver in 2014 and he's now playing running back. Mitchell's willingness to change positions for the betterment of the team is admirable

De'Andre Coley, 3-star DB
Portfolio: Coley has played in 24 games with 22 tackles in the last two seasons.

Tevin Beanum, 3-star DL
Portfolio: Beanum registered 24 tackles and two sacks while starting eight games as a redshirt sophomore last season. He's become a key contributor in the defensive line rotation —

Tiquention Coleman, 3-star LB
Portfolio: The junior college transfer from Georgia Military College never had a significant impact

Denzell Evans, 3-star RB
Portfolio: Evans announced this spring he is transferring to Kansas.

Korliss Marshall, 3-star RB
Portfolio: Marshall was dismissed from the team following the 2014 season

Melvinson Hartfield, 3-star WR
Portfolio: Hartfield redshirted in 2013 and never played for the Razorback

Johnathan McClure, 3-star OL
Portfolio: A junior college transfer from Butler (Kan.) Community College, McClure arrived at Arkansas as a two-time JUCO All-American. He was a scout-team reserve in 2014 and left the team before the 2015 season.

D.J. Dean, 3-star DB
Portfolio: Dean has 16 starts at cornerback over three seasons and enters his senior campaign as the Razorbacks' active leader in career interceptions with four.

Alex Brignoni, 3-star DB
Portfolio: Brignoni was forced to retire due to injury just prior to his redshirt freshman season

Ke'Tyrus Marks, 3-star DL
Portfolio: Marks has yet to crack the defensive line rotation in his three seasons, and is likely to spend another season primarily on the scout team

Drew Morgan, 2-star WR
Portfolio: The diamond in the rough of this class, Morgan burst onto the scene as a junior last season with 63 catches for 843 yards and 10 touchdowns. He made his way onto the Biletnikoff Award watch list

Sam Irwin-Hill, 2-star P
Portfolio: The Australia native came to Arkansas after two seasons at City College of San Francisco and averaged over 40 yards per punt as a two-year starter. He provided one of the best highlights of the 2014 season with a 51-yard touchdown run off a fake punt against A&M.

247Sports finally releases initial 2018 Composite rankings, 5-star quarterback given perfect score

QuoteAt the top of the rankings is quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The Cartersville, Ga, native was given a perfect score. Only three prospects have ever finished with a perfect score: Jadeveon Clowney in 2011, Robert Nkemdiche in 2013 and Rashaun Gary in 2015.

Lawrence is nearing a commitment and Georgia is one of his favorites, along with Tennessee, Florida and Clemson.

LSU has a commitment from 5-star cornerback Kelvin Joseph, who comes in at No. 23 in the rankings. Georgia has a commitment from the No. 46 commit, Max Wray. Wray is an offensive tackle from Franklin, Ga.

Marq Burnett: Finally Revisiting Alabama's 2014 recruiting class

QuoteCam Robinson, 5-star left tackle
Robinson was the highest-rated player and he's lived up [and at times down] to his lofty ranking. Robinson has been Alabama's starter at left tackle since he stepped on campus.

Da'Shawn Hand, 5-star defensive end
It's hard to gauge Hand's value at this point because he hasn't been a full-time starter. Hand was the No. 1 player in the 2014 recruiting class and a lot of people were expecting him to make an immediate splash.

Tony Brown, 5-star cornerback
By pure talent and natural ability, a case could be made that Brown is the best player on the team. He is insanely athletic, strong with track speed. But all of those natural gifts haven't been able to translate to on-field success.

Marlon Humphrey, 5-star cornerback
After redshirting his first year in Tuscaloosa, Humphrey locked down a starting cornerback spot.

Rashaan Evans, 5-star outside linebacker
Evans spent his first two years as a reserve outside linebacker. He finished with 10 tackles in his second season.

Bo Scarbrough, 5-star athlete
Scarbrough is expected to be the starting running back this season. A lot of people have compared him to Derrick Henry from a physical standpoint. Scarbrough has dealt with injuries going all the way back to early in his high school career.

Rising high school junior Bo Scarborough

Christian Miller, 4-star outside linebacker
Miller redshirted his first year and didn't play much his second year, but could be in line for a situational role this coming season.

Hootie Jones, 4-star safety
Jones hasn't played a lot throughout his career so he's another one on whom it's tough to get a serious read (including DA Jerry Jones).

Ronnie Clark, 4-star outside linebacker/safety
Two torn Achilles later, Clark may never play a meaningful down at Alabama, especially if he stays at running back.

Ross Pierschbacher, 4-star offensive lineman
Along with Cam Robinson, Pierschbacher has turned out to be one of the most valuable members of the 2014 class. After redshirting his first year, Pierschbacher started every game at left guard last season. With Ryan Kelly moving on, Alabama moved Pierschbacher to center.

David Cornwell, 4-star quarterback
If you're ranking the quarterbacks coming out of the spring, it wouldn't be a stretch to say Cornwell is No. 4 out of four. Of the four, Cornwell struggled the most during Alabama's A-Day game.

Cam Sims, 4-star wide receiver
Portfolio: sidelined him. Now he has to work his way back.

Josh Frazier, 4-star defensive tackle
Portfolio: Frazier is another guy who saw a younger player at his position step in ahead of him.

J.C. Hassenauer, 4-star center
With Pierschbacher moving to center, it looks like Hassenauer may spend another year as a backup.

Shaun Dion Hamilton, 4-star linebacker
Last year, Hamilton mostly played in the Tide's base defense as he posted 27 total tackles. He's arguably the smartest person on the team.

Derek Kief, 4-star wide receiver
Kief is stuck in the shuffle behind other talented players.

Joshua Casher, 4-star offensive lineman
Injuries have slowed Casher's development to a degree, and it also doesn't help to have so many other talented guys at his position.

Keith Holcombe, 4-star linebacker
Holcombe split his time between football and baseball this spring, so his spot with the football team is a little unclear.

O.J. Smith, 3-star defensive lineman
The Juice dealt with injuries and other players jumped him on the depth chart during his first two years.

Johnny Dwight, 3-star defensive lineman
Dwight spent last year with the tight ends, but he was back with the defensive line this spring likely because of a lack of depth at the position. Similar to Josh Frazier and O.J. Smith, this is Dwight's best opportunity to push for playing time.

JK Scott, 3-star punter
Depending on how Alabama's offense looks to start the season, Scott could become an even more valuable player.
