Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders dies

Hodgkin's lymphoma proves fatal for the team executive who was in his second time around as head coach.

QuoteFlip Saunders, the Timberwolves' president of basketball operations who has been sidelined for the coming season as head coach because of cancer, has died, the Timberwolves said Sunday. He was 60.

Saunders is the team's all-time winningest coach, ending with a record of 427 wins and 392 losses. Including his coaching stints at Detroit and Washington, which came between his two Minnesota coaching terms totaling 11 seasons, Saunders' NBA record is 654-592.

Philip Daniel Saunders was born Feb. 23, 1955, in Cleveland. He was an All-America basketball player at Cuyahoga Heights High School in suburban Cleveland and was named Ohio's Class A High School Basketball Player of the Year in `1973.

At the University of Minnesota, he started 101 of his 103 career games. As a senior, he joined Ray Williams, Mychal Thompson, Kevin McHale, and Osborne Lockhart to lead the Gophers to a school-best 24–3 record.

Saunders joined the Timberwolves in May 1995 as general manager, working under former Gophers teammate McHale. In December 1995, Saunders was named head coach.

Saunders directed the Wolves to their first-ever playoff berth in 1996–97, his first full season as an NBA head coach. A year later, he led the Timberwolves to their first-ever winning season. They went on to a franchise-record 50 victories in 1999–2000, which was duplicated in 2001–2002...

It'll be a tough year, with Flip dying just as the roster he worked to put together entering play.

I hope they play well for Flip, and kick the crap out of the Lakers on Tuesday.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Prayers sent. Cancer Sux !!!
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

That was a really nice tribute by Wall. Condolences to the Saunders family.
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.
