Gamecocks (19-4, 9-1) are in first place in the SEC — South Carolina basketball appeared across the board in this week's bracketology projections as a No. 5 or No. 6 seed.

ESPN's Joe Lunardi (Feb. 6 update) has the Gamecocks projected as a No. 5 seed playing in Greenville, S.C., as part of the West Regional. USC would face No. 12 UNC Wilmington across from a meeting between No. 4-seeded Virginia and No. 13 Belmont.

Mississippi 66 at Tennessee 75

Tennessee beats fellow bubble team Mississippi

Mississippi couldn't get it done again. The loss drops Ole Miss to 14-10 overall, including 2-8 vs. the RPI top 50 and 4-10 vs. the top 100. They have yet to beat a likely tournament team. Mississippi might need to win its last seven games to give themselves a chance at an at-large. They will be favored in most of them. Can they get in with less? Maybe, but why take the chance.

Vols, meanwhile, added to their run of hot play. They have now won five out of six, including their two best victories of the season against Kentucky and Kansas State. Still, Tennessee is only 13-10, so they still have quite a bit of work to do, but they have a schedule that gives them a chance to do it.

After the game Bruce Pearl declared the loss "the most disappointing" of his career at Auburn. By giving up a big lead in Mississippi, the Tigers may have also squandered their ability to dictate their own postseason route.

Auburn rested at No. 8 in the SEC standings on Sunday morning, coming down.  At this point the NIT looks like a more realistic option for Pearl's squad.

Kentucky can't make the Final Four unless ... they commit themselves defensively and are disciplined defensively. There's a difference between disrupting and defending. It's one thing to disrupt, but if you don't have the discipline to defend and finish possessions, don't have the discipline to defend the whole clock, don't have the discipline and toughness to fight screens, you're not going to the Final Four.

Kentucky can make the Final Four because ... they have the most explosive point guard in college basketball. When he's at his best, De'Aaron Fox is the most explosive guard on both sides of the floor...

Like a whole bunch of men's basketball teams, Vols have serious work to do to stay in the March Madness conversation. It's time to cram for exams.

Three losses in the past four games. Snap and clear. Tennessee (14-12, 6-7 SEC) has five games left in the regular season. Only one – at South Carolina – offers a major boost to UT's strength of schedule. The only mission, then, is to pile up wins.

The fallout from Vanderbilt's disappointing loss at Missouri Saturday puts the Commodores in a difficult spot.

Vanderbilt lost 72-52 at Missouri and now faces six regular-season games and the SEC Tournament with dwindling hope of an NCAA Tournament bid.

Shelby Mast, USA Today's bracketologist from BracketWAG.com, moved Vanderbilt from his first four teams out of the NCAA Tournament.

Vanderbilt's RPI dropped from No. 47 to No. 65, ranked eighth in the SEC, after the loss to Missouri.

To get back to legitimate bubble talk, Vanderbilt likely would have to reel off a winning streak, a win at Kentucky on Feb. 28 and advance deep into the SEC Tournament. Beating the Wildcats at Rupp Arena would be hard enough, as the Commodores have not won there since 2007. And an SEC Tournament run would also be difficult, especially because Vanderbilt has not won a game in that bracket since 2013.

16-10 record leaves work if the Crimson Tide hopes to make its first NCAA tournament since 2012. The final stretch begins with Georgia at 6p CT Thursday in Coleman.

As of Monday evening, Alabama had an RPI of No. 74 after beating the SEC's two worst teams last week. The remaining schedule is manageable with Georgia (RPI No. 56), Texas A&M (No. 93), Ole Miss (No. 69) and Tennessee (No. 50) to close things out.

The Tide is 9-5 in the SEC, but hasn't won more than two straight in league play. Consistency has been an occasional issue with 20-point losses at Auburn and Arkansas coupled with a road win at then-No. 19 South Carolina.

The best win on Alabama's resume remains the 90-86 final against the Gamecocks. The Tide is 4-9 against teams in the RPI top 100 -- 6-9 if you include the top 150.

Kentucky's five-game winning streak is over five opponents that have a combined overall record of 62-62. Sat.'s game vs. Florida is huge.

It will be a lot easier to evaluate Kentucky after Saturday's game with Florida. Cats simply haven't played NCAA teams in past few weeks.
