Enjoy an old classic.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.
-- Major General Patrick Cleburne

I was there and remember it well.  Navy played hard and never quit.

Didn't Navy have a good running back?  His name was like Napoleon Kaufman or something like that?

DeltaBoy

He was out with the Flu. He did not play that night.

Napoleon McCallum

Kaufman went to UWashington

You don't see a lot of collisions like that anymore b/t the FB and LB. Back then it took a little something extra (for both positions) to do that over and over and over all game long.

pigture perfect

My high school team mate #19 Vince McBeth played lb for Navy that game. One great guy.

Yep the Navy was Hyping him for the Heisman that year

U.S. Naval Academy[edit]
McCallum had offers to play for major football powers including Syracuse, Tennessee and North Carolina State, but they all wanted him as a defensive back and not as a running back.[4] He committed to attend the U.S. Naval Academy where he played football and was the star tailback, punt returner and kick returner. In the second game of his senior year, he suffered a season-ending injury to his ankle. McCallum was granted an additional season eligibility by the NCAA and the Naval Academy.

During his time at Navy, he was a two-time consensus All-American and set an NCAA record with 7,172 career all-purpose yards. He is also the career rushing leader at Navy with 4,179 yards. He was a member of the Navy Midshipmen football team that played in the Army-Navy game at the Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, California in 1983. He scored two touchdowns in Navy's 48-13 victory.

McCallum was a computer science major at the Naval Academy and as of 1986 held 16 football records there. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003.

Great find.  Nothing like a straight on kicker. Shibest got a lot of crap as a coach here but he could sure catch a football.

I was there at the SMU game in '84. He hauled in everything that got close to him. Had 13 catches, 199 yds, 2 TDs.

Most memorable play was when SMU COMPLETELY blew a coverage, as in had NO defender on Shibest, who was our widest receiver on the offensive left. Taylor did not notice, however, and Shibest was trying to get his attention, with small hand motions, without alerting the defense.

Taylor never did see it before the snap, so he rolled right, looked around, finally saw Shibest all fricking alone deep down the left side. Flung it as far as he could, back across his body, Shibest had to wait for the ball, made the catch, but SMU defenders raced over to prevent the TD.

I love watching playbacks of old classics. Wish more of them were posted on MMQ.
