What is the rundown on the Wildcats?

TNhawgfan

Not just them, but the other West coast teams we'll play this weekend. I know nothing about any of the four teams we'll see in San Diego. Any knowledge from the EI geniuses is appreciated

For the tournament teams

Friday's opponent-Cal Poly went 1-2 to start the season beating Gonzaga 8-7 before losing to New Mexico 3-1 and losing to highly ranked Oregon State 16-7.
Saturday's opponent-San Diego State beat UC-Santa Barbara 9-1 and 8-4 and 7-5 to sweep the series.
Sunday's opponent-San Diego lost to California 6-1, then beat California 11-8. They played two games against Cincinnati today and lost in the first game 7-4 but won the second 4-3.

San Diego and San Diego State will play one another on Tuesday.

Haven't had a chance to look at them. I'll try to get a look this week.

Arizona is picked to finish 4 in the Pac 12 behind Oregon St., Stanford and UCLA.

"Arizona has a strong core of experienced, talented returnees to lean upon. Five returning Wildcats earned some type of all-conference honors last year, led by All-Pac-12 selections Alfonso Rivas and Cesar Salazar. Both of those players look poised to do even bigger things as juniors this spring. Rivas, a second-team preseason All-American, is one of college baseball's best pure hitters, and his power is emerging as well. Salazar is another disciplined lefthanded hitter, but his leadership and his outstanding defense behind the plate make him especially valuable."

Cal Poly is picked to finish 4th in the Big West conference behind Cal St. Fullerton, Long Beach St. and UC Santa Barbara.

Cal Poly returns the best offense in the Big West from a year ago (even though it still hit just .275) and have seven returnees in the batting order, led by OF Alex McKenna (.360/.424/.487) and DH Bradlee Beesley (.350/.376/.400). The infield needs to clamp down a bit more after fielding at a .967 pace a year ago. SS Kyle Marinconz (.273) and 2B Scott Ogrin (.217) will be a solid double-play combo and also have 1B Elijah Skipps (.252/.368/.384) and catcher Nick Meyer (.255) back to make the offense/defense even better. McKenna, Meyer and Marinconz are all possible top 10 round draftees this June, so the quality is there.

San Diego St. The Aztecs are projected to win the Mountain West this year and make the field of 64.

Despite missing many of the bigger bats in the lineup and missing weekend starters Brett Seeburger and Dominic Purpura, head coach Mike Martinez says this year's squad is "one of the most talented teams we've ever had at San Diego State."  A pair of seniors will be leaned on in the rebuilt bullpen in LHP Jacob Erickson (5-3, 3.67), who tailed off a bit at the end of 2017, and RHP Jorge Fernandez (3-1, 2.79), who attacks the plate with a 92-93 fastball and low 80s slider.

San Diego
Picked to win the West Coast Conference, very weak conference as a whole.

Their entire weekend rotation is back led by arguably the most dynamic lefty duo in the country. Junior Nick Sprengel (9-1, 3.29) is the conference's top draft prospect because of his swing-and-miss stuff. He can get his fastball up to 96 mph and has two excellent secondary pitches. Time on the Collegiate National Team this summer will only help his development. He allowed only one hit for a team-best .037 batting average against in 8.1 innings. When he is attacking the zone, Sprengel has no-hit potential, but his walk rate increased his sophomore season as he walked 33 batters in 82 innings after just 19 in 65.1 innings his freshman year.  Pairing with Sprengel is sophomore southpaw Chris Murphy (3-4, 4.17). His biggest issue also related to control, as he walked 35 batters (and hitting another 15) in 69 innings. Neither Sprengel's 3.6 walks per nine innings nor Murphy's 4.6 is terrible, but the Toreros are going to have to limit free passes to live up to their potential against a difficult nonconference schedule that features five Pac-12 teams, two of the top programs from the Big West, two schools from the AAC as well as Michigan from the Big Ten and preseason top five opponents Texas Tech, Arkansas and Oregon State from three of the Power Five conferences. Paul Richan (5-2, 3.05) rounds out the rotation with sophomore arms Louie Crow and Miles Sandum expected to have big roles out of the bullpen.

Arizona and the SD St. game should be the most entertaining, imo. If we don't bring our "A" game we could lose them all.

In recent history the Pigs have not had a lot of luck when traveling west.  Hopefully this team will change that.

Paul Richan of San Diego had 12 strikeouts in 6.2 innings in his first outing. He was the losing pitcher in the game despite only giving up 1 unearned run. Murphy of San Diego struck out9 and walked 4 in 5 innings. He gave up 5 earned runs but got no decision as they came back to win.

For San Diego State Boyer struck out 8 in 3.2 innings and got no decision. In game 2, the starter and three relievers combined for 13 Ks. Games 3and 4 were uneventful from a pitching standpoint.

Cal Poly played one of the few games today(Monday) and lost to Gonzaga 5-4 to make them 1-3 on the year thus far.

Good info in this thread.

Also, for future reference, we have added each of our competitor's websites to our "Arkansas Razorbacks Baseball Schedule/Results" thread stickied at the top.
