QB's, interesting how the Allen boys have lost a bit of weight. Was that by design, or did they mess up, given everything else about them one has to assume it was by design.

RB: Collins has definitely bulked up. Looks like Day had to do a bit of weight transformation, losing some bad weight before building good weight.

FB: Most seemed to have lost a bit of weight, which is surprising. Walker gained a few pounds.

WR: Not much change in weights.

TE: A bit of weight loss at the TE. Kraus has dropped nearly 30 pounds since coming here last year. Henry lost 5, Voelzke dropped 4 and sprinkle gained 2.

OL: Newcomer Allen has made some good gains. Walk-on Givson has dropped some weight in what is probably a good weight, but Hannah has dropped to 288. Either he is is having trouble maintaining his weight or he may be transitioning to a different role. Kirkland has added 13 pounds while also transitioning from guard to tackle, which seems strange, but if he can be quick and big, more power to him, literally. Merrick and Tretola have both definitely trimmed down.

DT: Boyd continues the transition to DL, down in the 280's from the 310's. Hodge trimmed up for last season a bit, but is now back to 340. Of course, maybe it is more muscle this time. Bijon has continued to trim up, losing 10 pounds. Ward has followed a similar weight path to Boyd while Watts has climbed from 260 a year ago to 295 this spring. Taiwan Johnson is now listed at 273, nearly 20 pounds over last June, though I imagine he played last season at more than just 255.

DE: Beanum and Winston have both made nice gains weighing in the 270's now. Hall has also put on around 16 pounds.

LB: Ellis has certainly trimmed up about 7 pounds, walk-on turned two deep participant Harris has gained a commendable 10 pounds in each iteration.

CB: Collins has dropped nearly 10 pounds, Floyd 15, though Ramirez has gained 7 pounds.

S: Gaines has dropped 5 pounds, while Liddell has gained 4.

K: Hedlund has not gained weight from his listed weight in HS, his listed weight coming here, and now. It is possible that he has dropped some chunk and added some more lean mass but I would argue that is evidence that he wasn't red-shirted because the coaches were afraid of him getting hit.

I'm really interested in the trends of DB's and TE's losing weight.

Froholdt is up 30 pounds and Taiwan is up nearly 20 to 290. Another big change is Sprinkle up to 255.

Did Deon Stewart go from 190-165 or is it the other way around? (please say the other way around)

The 190 was his HS listed weight/the weight listed on signing day by the university. 165 is his weight on the fall roster. Highly possible he didn't lose 25 but instead was over listed. Possible that he trimmed off some bad weight though.

DE Jamario Bell up from 225 to 253? Good progress.

Anthony Brown ... 6-3 ... 270 ... AYSM?

Is Cornelius Floyd down to 172 to get faster? Began at 190.

Derrick Graham ... 6-4 ... 247 ... linebacker?

Kendrick Jackson ... 6-1 ... 249 ... beginning to wonder if the Hogs are going to say "screw it" and start five defensive ends.

Josh Liddell at safety is listed at 6-1, 210, which is Alabama size. Also Davyon McKinney, 6-1, 215.

At 6-2, 205, La'Michael Pettway is an interesting football player.

Froholdt is an interesting one with the weight changes. It is possible that perhaps I got my lineup wrong, but It seemed like this spring, he was at 309, then when they updated the roster for returning players he was at 311, but now it is updated to include new players is at 299. Happened to a few other players as well, but with smaller differences.

Spring press guide had Froholdt at 6-5, 311. Same in the post-spring depth chart.

They have now added the incoming True Fr Walkon's.  Some of them are very exciting

Klint Harvey- 6-6 344 OT from Corning.  Love it!  Could be next David Hurd or Rickey Wagner that CBB had at Wisky that was drafted 5th round and now starts for Baltimore

Byran Keaton- 5-10 175 CB from Camden.  Could be the next Kevin Richardson

Tyler Phillips- 6-1 222 LB from NLR.  The Sparq king could end up developing into at worst a special teams demon, and could definitely carve out a role in the depth chart down the road

Others

Zack English 5-8 175 WR from Prosper, Tx
George Madden 6-1 226 Long Snapper from Blanchard, Ok
Howie Stettmeier 6-4 242 TE from Rogers

been reading in other threads ac is down to 205 guess that's not official thou.

I somehow missed announcement of Zack English, a fun-sized player out of 5A Prosper, TX, to the walk-on program.

Noticeable changes: Several of the DE's have lost some weight, such as Beanum and Dean, further evidence they are looking for more of the explosive and attacking DL from 2014 rather than the reacting and maintaining DL we used last year.

Merrick has lost a good bit of weight, though Bijhon has gained some back. From the coaches, BJ seems to be in a similar position that Hodge was for much of his career here, having trouble keeping off bad weight that leads to conditioning issues. However, not being there myself and interacting, it is entirely possible he only added good weight.

Pulley is a lot smaller and Ramsey is listed at 230 now.

We aren't seeing a ton of weight transformations now like we had in the past. I think this is a good sign that we are as a team mostly where we want to be with just some fine tuning tweaks.

So everyone one of the nationalized incidents were justified? There is no race problems with policing? If that is what you believe.....well bless your heart, it must be hard going through life with the obstacles you must have to overcome. Do they send a bus to come pick you up?

Notable Changes:

Beanum down 13 pounds, his slimming down would go with the other decisions of the coaching staff going for a faster DL. Daytreon Dean up 23 pounds. This is a lot of weight, and very skeptical it is all muscle. Perhaps too lax this summer, or they are wanting him to be stronger at the line, and playing more inside at tackle or be a run stopping DE. T. Johnson down 7, not a huge difference, but he's back to the weight he was playing at in 2014. Wise Jr is similarly down 7 pounds as well.

Greenlaw down 4 pounds, though still up 5 lbs from this time last year. Josh Harris up 11 pounds. Walk on had made some noise last year as a freshmen. Josh Williams is up 11 pounds as well. Most of the freshmen LB's added significant weight this summer.

Dalton down 14. His 204 weight in the spring would be more on par with coaches wanting him to be a safety. Him dropping down to 190 sounds more like a CB weight, if that loss was by design. Liddell up 7 pounds. Perhaps looking to be more of a hard hitting safety as he is approaching WLB weight.

Whaley is up to 217 which is about what RW3 was at his freshmen season and more than either Alex or JWill came in at for their freshmen seasons.

Cantrell up 9, either didn't stay well in shape which IMO is doubtful at his position, or extra strength is for extra muscle blocking. Hatcher down 12 pounds. Injury related, or wanting him to be faster? Hollister is up 9 and given his frame, presumably wouldn't lose a step. Kraus up 10 pounds.

Hannah down 11. Presumably having trouble keeping up the weight. Ramirez is up 14 pounds and while still on the light end for a tackle, is not at such a light weight that he'd be a liability if he played.

One player to add to the list is Ffr OL Coooer Sone.  Joined the team just before the season last fall.  Came in at 6'2" 260 and is currently 6'3", 281.  Body by Herb is the real thing.  His mother and l's grocery bill this summer is proof of that! This pic was from spring ball 10lbs ago.  Fayetteville High Sr vs Hog Fr.

I made sure to pay attention to him on the roster after seeing your posts, but apologies for not having him on the list.

Thanks for all the work on the changes and updates.  These guys are working very hard this summer.  Some were supposed to add weight while others were to tighten up.  From my observations, Herbert is worth every penny and then some.

So, I was planning on making a post noting that there is still nearly 2 months until game day so these listed weights are likely to change. However, you mention that not only are these weights from at least early July, but from a month ago even?

I know in years past, the roster has typically been updated in late July shortly before starting fall camp and those weights were what was listed until the start of spring practice. Any idea on if they will update the weights again before the start of the season?

Thanks for your insight.

I haven't seen Daytreon Dean since his Northside days, but I can tell you he had the frame to put on some weight.  Hopefully it was good weight.

I believe it. It is just very hard for somebody to put that much weight on in that short of a time and it be good weight. However, not impossible. Lots of scenarios here. As I mentioned, they may want him to fill into that Taiwan Johnson type role so a little extra isn't too bad. Maybe they wanted him to bulk up as much as possible, so you go extra on the calories and get some fat to make sure your muscles aren't being limited in calories and nutrients for growth with the plan of trimming down the fat before the season starts. Or, it is possible he is just that genetically gifted and put in that much work. I have nothing here to offer but speculation.

The add weight group weighs in every day before their workout.(6am 4 mornings a week) Some are are on the drop or maintain group and I'm not sure how many times a week that they weigh. I'm not sure if the "final weight" that goes into the program will be from before or after fall camp just prior to game 1.

Dean's weight is good weight I assure you.  His quickness and agility are improving also.  I have a special interest in Daytreon. My son was a LT at Fayetteville when Daytreon was a DE at Northside.  He's fun to watch.  A lot of these guys don't start to fill out until they're 19-20 years old.  Coach Herbert catches them at the right time and they just balloon up in muscle mass.   That's Coach Herbert's special talent.  Seeing how and when they can add the mass.  Don't be skeptical of Daytreon's weigh.  It's good weight and he's working hard.  He's also tearing it up in the classroom.  Great Hog on all levels.

It would be great to see Daytreon blow up and contribute on the line.

Daytreon Dean up 23 pounds. This is a lot of weight, and very skeptical it is all muscle. Perhaps too lax this summer, or they are wanting him to be stronger at the line, and playing more inside at tackle or be a run stopping DE.

You should not make statements like that based solely on numbers with zero actual knowledge.

Never claimed I had any inside knowledge and deferred to those that did. I do have actual knowledge on nutrition and that it is hard, but not impossible to to gain that much good weight in 6 months time. I listed more positive potential reasons for that than any negatives. As for the individual, all we have is solely the numbers.

My commentary there is akin to commenting on why Austin will have an incompletion. Perhaps he was inaccurate, maybe he got hit when he threw, maybe the receiver and him were not on the same page, maybe he threw it away to avoid a sack or risk an interception. Maybe the defender simply made a really good play. If all I have is the box score, then yes, I can't do anything but speculate on the list of possible reasons. Where it would be bad is if I assumed something negative about the player, such as assuming it was the OL's fault or assuming AA isn't accurate. Simply listing possible reasons for the outcome, especially when most of the possible outcomes are good things I would not think is bashing since I make no inclination as to what the correct answer is.

There was no reason to insinuate that Dean's weight gain was bad. And it's wrong to assume that he gained all that weight in a few months. Possible that he did, but you don't know whether the previous weight was from March, or December, or whenever. You don't know whether the previous weight was even right. The numbers they put on the roster vary widely in accuracy.

I know this much. Dean had shoulder surgery after his senior season in high school. He was unable to work out 100% for a long time. Now he is getting full benefit of the weight training program.

Now on the other end of this discussion - We've seen plenty of players make rapid gains in the past few years.

Bell 225 to 253
Brown 221 to 262
Collins 200 to 216
Colquitt 215 to 245
Gaines 186 to 200
Gibson 315 to 343
Greenlaw 206 to 222
Froholdt 280 to 299
Hackett 205 to 231
Hall 245 to 261
Hodge 301 to 340
Lewis 235 to 258
Peavey 200 to 212
Pettway 190 to 205
Pulley 197 to 210
Ramirez 172 to 195
Reynolds 190 to 210
Rossi 183 to 207
Skipper 311 to 331
Smothers 296 to 313
Toliver 165 to 192 <= !!!
Tretola 315 to 350
Voelzke 220 to 247
Wise 240 to 265
Watts 260 to 288
J. Williams 205 to 220

Some of these players made their biggest gains soon after getting into the Arkansas training regimen. Some did it coming off injury. Some weren't even real -- like Tretola, who never really weighed 315.

Agreed and agreed. I hope nobody in this thread insinuated his weight was bad. I admit I listed as a possible option, but I have zero desire to bash a player or even remotely hint that they aren't giving it their all. If you interpret my post as insinuating such a thing, let me know and I will modify it because that's never the intention. As a mod, I can believe you've read a lot of player bashing and rightfully should be out to make sure it doesn't happen; however, I think you are projecting things into my posts that aren't there.

Also, yes, it would be wrong to assume that he gained it in a few months. The correct assumption is that he gained it when they last reported weights which would have come in typically around early Jan though the date isn't set in stone.

QuotePossible that he did, but you don't know whether the previous weight was from March, or December, or whenever. You don't know whether the previous weight was even right. The numbers they put on the roster vary widely in accuracy.

Very true. They also vary in time, so while something may be accurate when made and reported, it could easily be 5 pound off each month after. However, I'm not going to assume that the University of Arkansas is lying to us and instead will trust their numbers until better numbers come out (arrests, combines, etc...)

Also true. What I'm going off of is general studies about fitness and rules of thumb such as can be found here

http://stronglifts.com/how-much-muscle-can-you-gain-in-1-month-naturally/

Now, the first thing to note is this is talking about averages. It is safe to assume that college athletes are going to be above average in that regard. Further, as you also mention, somebody who hasn't worked worked out will be able to have bigger gains that somebody who has been consistently working out.

If we ignore changes in water weight (or bodily waste weight as well), then we have bone, fat, and muscle weight. I have no idea how much weight change happens due to bone density changes, so I'm also going to ignore it for now, but somebody with more information, feel free to chirp in. So, that leaves us with muscle and fat. If we assume that he had 6 months to do this (i.e. assuming the UA isn't lying to us), then that is 23 pounds in 6 months. For an "average" person, that would be 12 pounds of muscle, but 11 pounds of fat. If we assume he is around 20% body fat, which sounds reasonable to me for a DL player, then maintaining the same overall composition would be adding 20 pounds of lean mass and ~4 pounds of fat. So, that would be asking him to get nearly twice the muscle gain (assuming it is all muscle, recall, bone mass is going play some factor but I'm not sure how much) of an average person. If it is true that he has only recently been able to work out heavily and we assume that college athletes are going to be better than average, then especially if bone mass makes up something like 4 pounds of that as well, (did see something where bones are 15-20% of body weight) now we are down to him only gaining ~16 pounds of muscle which is only a bit more than the average person and is a reasonable amount. He could be at 10% body fat and make that work. However, that is at the upper realm of what a body can do.

What a lot of people may not understand is that all of these players are monitored on a daily basis.  They had one week off at the beginning of the summer and they will get one week off just before fall camp.  During all this time, their weights and diets are constantly monitored.  I always knew that Coach Herbert kept in close contact with them regarding nutrition in addition to running workouts, but had not idea how much the nutrition was monitored until my son went through this offseason cycle.  If someone is not where they're supposed to be or working like they should be, Coach Herbert, Kiero Small, Tank Wright, or another member of the strength staff is quick to set them straight.  Basically what I'm saying is that if a player is up 20 or down 20 there is no reason to be alarmed.  They are headed in the direction the staff wants them to go.

damn I thought it was only a color, didn't realize it was named after a liqueur. leave it to benny to make me research the history of chartreuse

We need to give benny a way to post a spreadsheet, or post in columns, or something.

Does it look funky in the mobile version or something? Screenshot below of what I see. Anytime I'm on the desktop version, even on a smaller tablet screen, the formatting still looks fine for me.

Looks like crap on my smaller tablet, the second column of names fall in with the first.

I'm on desktop and it isn't aligned properly on mine either. Your screenshot looks fine though, just too small to read, at least for me. ;)

Strange. Not sure how to fix a problem that literally doesn't show up for me. Somebody out there feel free to take my post and modify that other people can better read it.

Eh, some of the allignment is off when I delete the second column and obviously the alphabeticalness is lost. That's as much extra work as I care to put in though.
