I got no love for refs. They have caused me to almost stroke out too many times through the years.  I like to think he had it coming.

Lol. literally.  ;D I know I have had moments where I wished some serious ill will upon the refs.
I spent most of my life drankin', gamblin', and chasing women, the rest I just wasted.

Story has gotten larger. Looks like an assistant coach ordered the hit on the ref. The coach has been placed on leave.

Guess the racial crap coming from the ref is bogus. That sounded weird to me. What ref uses racial epithets on the football field and it isn't just reported.

So the plot thickens. I wonder how long it will take.

You would not believe, well maybe you would, the crap youth sports officials have to deal with. I was working a tournament this spring where a guy told another umpire he was going to take him in the bathroom and bust him up. Same tournament, another guy threatened to be waiting in the parking lot for another ump. I was working a HS game in 2014, and a guy followed me and my partner to our cars, and physically blocked me from getting into my car.

I am not surprised one bit that people are defending the thugs. I think there were some posts in this thread that said they were okay with what happened.

I'm a high school official.  We all make mistakes and, like in any line of work, there are some who aren't as ethical as others.  But nobody deserves what that umpire got.  Nobody.  I guarantee you our security will be a little tighter this Friday night, but security can't do anything about the things that go on on the field.

A good friend of mine is a ref. He can tell some interesting stories. It just reminds me how crazy people can act over a game. I believe all refs should get a police or at least a security personnel escort at all levels in and out of the facility.

If you ref in the metro area I believe you live in or are close too they should allow you to use a carry permit..............

Will be at Arlington tonight but I'm often at Fairgrounds or Halle or BTW or Melrose or Crump.  Any of those, we are on high alert when we get there and we stay together until we leave the parking lot - with security - at the end of the game.

I live in the Arlington zip code in the city limits of Bartlett. You couldn't pay me enough to ref or even go there at night to all the other places you mention. Good luck. I hope you don't need security during the game.

Another San Antonio area player has gotten physical with a ref. While no where near as bad as last week it is odd to see it two weeks in a row.

The two players from Texas, say they were following their coaches orders.
Also says that their was another kid who was supposed to hit the ref but didn't.

I wonder if someone told them to shoot someone in the head, or hit them with their car, if they would do it.

They did this interview today to try and get sympathy on their side ahead of next weeks school hearing to decide if they get expelled or not.
From the article the school district will also file complaint against the referee.

After hearing the interview, and their replies one thing became very obvious. When the reporter asked what was going through their minds, I am pretty sure the correct answer was " the sound of rushing wind ".

They want to play the race card, yet when throwing their own coach under the bus they said he told them to do it to make the ref pay for cheating the team. If they did it on their own, in retaliation for VERBAL slurs, they should be charged with assault. If they did it at the order of their coach, they should be charged with assault AND the asst coach should be charged with conspiracy and be fired.

I do not think they should be expelled, they should be REQUIRED to finish school as a condition of whatever plea arrangement they eventually reach.

And, if they are not charged with anything, then I guess it is open season on refs.

Secondary coach admits to instructing the players to take out the ref, does that change your mind about the suggested punishment for them?

Not to me. The Asst coach should be fired for his stupidity and the players should still be barred from playing in any high school sports ever again. It doesn't matter that he told them to do it. They were still old enough to know that what he was telling them to do was wrong.

No one bit. And the claims of racist remarks is so obviously a throw in. The team was losing, they thought this ref had made some bad calls, and had already ejected another one of their players, and this "coach" told them to hit the ref.

If this was off the field, and he told them to hit a guy, walking down the street, from behind and then hit him in the back with a hard object, like a helmet, all 3 would be charged with crimes.

If it were my kid, I would defend him with the argument that the coach made them do it. I would also be in my kids ear harshly about me teaching him better than that.

No. It just means he should get as harsh if not harsher punishment than them. As another said what if they had been instructed by someone to shoot another person. They should have reported it to the head coach or someone else above that coach. That coach has no business keeping a job as an authority over youngsters. I'd hate to think what he is teaching any of his kids at home!

Doesn't change anything. All three should be charged with assault and at minimum be banned from ever playing or coaching again. These weren't little kids. They knew hitting the ref was wrong.

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Well like the one comment said......I am sure there will soon be a lawsuit filed by the Ref so the kids troubles aren't over.
