Thanks, Okla!
Are we sure JCorn will come back and is there any chance that Roesler asks for a medical hardship?
Will either or both be "encouraged" to end their careers to maybe help with the numbers crunch?

This team appears to be loaded with seniors and juniors. If they can adapt quickly to the new systems we should have a fairly decent season in 2018. That's assuming they have the the skills and I'm betting most of them do. I'm thinking 7 or 8 wins.

Williams started above Whaley late in the year and Cantrell was in there in lieu of a FB much of the time. I guess they could be?

Okla, are we at 84 with the current commits/early signees?

I have counted this 2 or 3 times and I keep coming up with 84, have I missed someone?

bennyl08

Cole Kelley is a returning starter with 4 starts.

Devwah Whaley started 9 games last season including the final 8 in a row. Not sure why he isn't bolded.

Kendrick Jackson has 8 career starts at FB including 5 starts last year while Hayden Johnson has 7 career starts.

O'Grady only has one start, but played a lot of snaps. Understand ignoring the one start and not bolding him as a returning starter though.

Ty Clary has 4 starts to his name.

You give nance a bold, but he only has 6 starts to his name. Jordan Jones has 6 starts and Stewart has 5.

While not a scholarship player yet, Limpert is a returning starter, though it doesn't list special teams and I'm not going to go through the game by game depth charts to find it.

We would like to add Dorian Gerald -> 89

So, we're 4-5 heavy.  I don't want to speculate on who is likely to leave, but I look at that roster and see a bunch of guys that were recruited to play by SEC schools.  In fact, a couple of our more lightly recruited Razorbacks have proven that their scholarships are well-deserved.

I expect this to be a competitive football team.  Giddy-up Hogs...

Oklahawg

Oklahawg,

I'm stealing your post for conversation purposes...

Based upon the above, we have no vacancy for recruits.  Yet, the Hogs continue to pursue a lot of talent for the 2018 class.  So, for every new commit, we must remove one scholarship player from the roster.  For a variety of reasons, we want to add John Stephen Jones to the class.  He is obviously a blueshirt candidate, but we've only got 16 rolling off next year.

I have no desire to speculate on players, just sayin'.  And we do not have a scholarship kicker.

To Bret's credit, our roster distribution is better than it has been in a long time.  We have far less attrition - hopefully, that will be reflected on the W/L columns this fall.

The numbers are damn tight.  Good luck to Chad and the rest of the staff and players sorting this thing out.

Go Hogs!

Note that Pulley will likely redshirt, but I don't think that matters (he'll go pro after next year).

From the junior class, it is reasonable for Storey to leave if he doesn't win the starting QB gig. There was that speculation late in the fall. I hate to "bash" but this is more common for QB than other positions.

Cantrell, Agim, Johnson, Martin, and Whaley are sufficiently gifted to be grad transfers or early entrees into the NFL draft after next year.

That creates a little wiggle room.

It is my understanding we've got a gifted PWO (preferred walkon) placekicker in the pipeline. That is pretty common.

ADDENDUM: CBB did a fantastic job of roster management. All 16 seniors last year had a degree when they played their last game. Something like that. Most who are seniors now will be graduates by December as well. We did not recruit problems so we have not had to purge many.

I am curious if JSJ could sign a LOI and reject the scholarship if he wanted to - honor the opportunity and then let the family pay the tuition. That is a very unique situation.

I like what I am seeing.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

IMO Gabe Richardson and Jamario Bell will be on the Dline, not at LB. Ramsey probably as well as a rush end because Chavis runs a lot of 4-2-5 with a nickel.

Three and Snout

You can remove Josh Paul, unless he has a more miraculous turnaround than Randy Ramsey did a while back.

I also think the following could play a part in our 85 man roster limit before fall camp begins:

15.5.1.6 Aid After Departure of Head Coach. A student-athlete who receives athletically related institutional
financial aid in subsequent academic years after the departure of a head coach from the institution is not
a counter, provided: (Adopted: 4/29/10 effective 8/1/10, Revised: 4/26/17 effective 8/1/17)
(a) The student-athlete participated in the applicable sport and received athletically related institutional
financial aid during the coach's tenure at the institution; and
(b) The student-athlete does not participate in the applicable sport during subsequent academic years at the
      institution.

Seems like they just have to quit the team.  The athletic department can still give them the same money as their agreements stated, so the four-year scholarship is not being canceled.  The (former) player gets to continue pursuing his degree on a full ride at the same institution, and the team gains an open scholarship.  Win-win.  The athletic department just needs to have the available funds, which we do.

Notes:

1. updated signee list for 2018 to include Gary Cross (blueshirt).
2. moved signees to a "first guess" on positions they will play.

On #2, please note that until we see the players on the field for spring drills we are all "flying blind" regarding who is a DT vs DE, what LBs go where (and if the OLBs will be interchangeable), and which OL becomes OC. I've heard Hays and Froholdt but only Clenin is on the list. I could put three there, two, or just Clenin.

Warrior Way 22

Thanks for posting and updating this. Looks like the Hogs are getting some solid depth, especially in the secondary where it seems like injuries have really hurt us the last few years.

Not bad for a composite 83 player out of high school...

so who are the fatal five?  I really don't want to even begin to pare through the roster. There will be a handful that cut themselves in spring practice. I don't think there will be but a couple tough decisions, will be some uncommon players decide this game ain't for them in this new way of trying to win.

I don't think anything has been announced, but you have to be a current student to be a current student-athlete.

So 1 down w/ Kraus not returning as I expected.

If what's been said about Josh Paul is true I guess we've got 3 to go. McClure should still be a walk on I imagine.

I could see Dalton, Hernandez & Boateng being those 3.

Boy, does Richardson getting a 6th year alter the numbers? If so we are now at 89 with Kraus and Paul gone, so we are still 4 over.

Could CM work this put by rescinding a couple of awarded walk-on scholarships?

BoynamedWooPigSooie

I would think Richardson is playing for his 6th yr during spring ball.  If the younger guys are better then see-ya bud.

I've always thought it spoke more about the state of the program when a guy like KRich is your best DB and a captain. Props to him for busting his ass to earn a spot and be a contributor but the lack of talent on defensive has been obvious and not just because Bielema trotted out the worst defenses in Razorback history the last few seasons.

Also per CCM latest comments Dylan Hays & Ty Clary are our Centers.  Jake Hall is at DT along w/ Marshall & TJ Smith.

Dalton and Hernandez would both be big losses IMO.

I think one of the qb's will leave. Boateng is a strong contender for leaving which I agree with you on. I think we have at least one if not two leave who just don't mesh with the new coaching staff. Transfer out of the blue type of thing.

Though, in spite of my first statement, it wouldn't be surprising to see a LB and/or a DB transfer due to the large depth that we have and the quality of the depth.

Dalton, Hernandez, McClellion, and Smith are all in a tough position IMO. When they signed, our talent levels and depth were low save for a player here or there. To use RB's as a comparison, the four I mentioned would be like us signing Dennis Johnson, Cedric Cobbs, Broderick Greene, and Peyton Hillis. However, then we go out and sign our new crop of DB's the past two years who are like Alex Collins, Whaley, JWill, and Felix.
