Yes, lived there for three years.  Between Mud Island and Germantown/Collierville, it's one of the the most economically depressed (and frankly, unsafe) places I've ever been.  Also, the city and county government are about the most corrupt entities I have ever had the misfortune to witness.  I'm not just trashing Memphis--it really is sad how some people live there.  It really reminds you how truly blessed we are up here.

I hate to say all this because there are some fine people there.  There is absolutely no comparison whatsoever between the quality of life in NWA and Memphis.  That being said, it's a fun town and there are a lot of cool things to do in Memphis (Rendezvous, Gus's Chicken, Redbirds games, the Zoo, etc.)--but after living there for three years, I'd rather do those things on a weekend and slip safely back to civilization. . .

After my daughter was born, my wife and I really had to evaluate where we wanted her to grow up...and, needless to say, Memphis wasn't it.

how much of a fan base does the U of Memphis and the Grizzlies have in East Arkansas?  Do Arkansans venture there to watch BBall?

I am from Eatern Arkansas, and the only games I went to watch were when the hogs played Auburn in the liberty bowl and when the hogs played memphis there........oh yea, watched the Ravens play the Oilers when they first moved there. But, not many NBA fans in Eastern Ark.

born in memphis raised in west memphis--moved away when my son was born ---live in cape girardeau, mo now---memphis is a lot like new orleans---if you want trouble its real easy to find---here in cape you have to search it out---you have got to develope a thick skin and a callous heart to survive there. but there are some truly wonderful charming people there.

Memphis and New Orleans are the two armpits of the USA.

Not much of a world traveler are you?
Anyone with a sense of style and a taste for fun would know that Memphis and New Orleans are top 20 cities for food and party (obviously NO is ranked pre Katrina).  I bet your idea of a great time is a movie and Applebee's isn't it?

Calipari's has 2 daughters and one son, I know one of the daughters graduated from White Station( a public school in Memphis). I think his son is in elem. school and attends one of the public schools. Memphis is like anywhere. There  are good parts of Shelby county and bad parts. Shelby county has its share of good public schools and its bad ones. I actually live in eastern Arkansas but go to Memphis quite often. I had Grizzlies season tickets and catch a lot of Redbird games. I saw the Cards yesterday. In fact I am going to Memphis tommorrow after church. Memphis is not as bad as some make it sound. In fact a few of my neighbor farmers actually live in Memphis and drive to Arkansas to farm. I don't see Cal leaving Memphis. He owns a few business's in Memphis and seems to like the area.

Memphis and NO mentioned in the same breath as "world travel."

Most of the schools close early in the summer months because there is no air conditioning in them. Herenton has no interest in the kids.

I have relatives that live there.

Actually they wised up and moved out to Germantown.

That is the whole point. More people live in the METRO areas of Memphis than in the CITY. I don't live in MEMPHIS.

Used to live in Jonesboro and make the trip to Memphis occasionally.  Best BBQ around.  Seriously.  Does have some good places in it.  However, DO NOT GET LOST DOWN TOWN AFTER MIDNIGHT!!!  The absolute closest I've ever come to being murdered.  Seriously.  Visit often, but visit early.  Oh, and only visit.  Don't ever live there.

Agreed.  There's some excellent places to eat, Beale Street and the riverfront area isn't bad.

However, I will not drive to Memphis without being armed.  Get lost in Orange Mound or Frayser at night and you'll see what I mean.

Sure is funny how the Memphis trolls that visited here tonight left as quickly as they came when they found that a lot of us have more infomation on that place than they on  have Arkansas. I guess thats because its getting more difficult to steal a car to take a road trip.

I lived in Orange Mound. Not a scratch on me.

i'm with you dhornjr1--orange had its moments but there were places where i found more trouble than there--i guess thats the thing, you really did not want to find trouble in orange--i have been all over though chitown, ny, d.c, n.o. l.a., dallas, st. louey, philly, ect--and found bad in all and good. but memphis and new orleans are the only two where i never felt relaxed---now philly is where the rudest people i have ever met lived, they seemed to crude to worry about physically accosting you---and i just remembered the worst place ever ---l.s.u at a night game---brutal!!!!!!!!!!!

I lived in Memphis for 6 years, worked as a doctor at the trauma center (The Med).  You haven't seen the half of it.  On a hot August night, we'd get at least 10 gunshot victims a night.  At least.  Most would get patched up and released within a few hours.
One night got a tourist who had been chopped up with a hatchet.  Had to clean out his brain where the hatched had lodged dirt and debris.  This happened two blocks south of Beale street.
The city is an absolute corrupt, lawless entity.
I forsee no improvement any time soon.
We left for a nicer life in Chattanooga.
But all in all, you just can't beat NWA.

I'm a sales rep and have all of Arkansas as my territory.  I recently acquired Shelby County (Memphis) and Desoto County in Mississippi also.

I can honestly say that Memphis is the only city that I've ever travelled in which I do not feel safe in (I've also covered San Antonio, Austin, and the Rio Grande Valley area in years past and never felt like I was in harm's way).

Hell, I've been to parts of Memphis during the day and felt damn uneasy.  You couldn't pay my ass enough to live there.

And that, my friends, sums up the disparate views we see as well as any post: It depends on whether you live near Memphis or live near Memphis. All of Shelby County is not Memphis... Like saying I live "in Little Rock" when you actually reside in Cabot...I lived in Memphis proper for 4 years. There are safe areas in Shelby County and there are unsafe areas in Shelby County. There are some cool things to do...But I would never live there again.

There's a poster on there by the handle of uofmcamaro that's really running his mouth.

Someone oughta remind him that, at the end of the day, he's still a fan of a glorified mid-major.  What a chode.

I was stationed at Blytheville in the mid 80s. Memphis was the first place I ever saw that a fast food joint had to have an off duty police officer work security. There is good music and clubs there, but aparently there is a Big Deal there, too. Huggers seem to spring up like weeds.

Memphis is like any other city its size--there are good neighborhoods and bad ones.

It's really not that bad.  Just stay out of Frazier and the center or south sections of town and you'll have it made.

As soon as you  cross the river you are in a bad part of the city.

Oh, I'll give you that much.  The trick is to hold your breath until you get into Bartlett, Germantown, or one of the outlying areas.  The roads just across the river from West Memphis are an eyesore, and everyone has known that for decades.

Just don't make the mistake of going onto Danny T Blvd.  You'll be alright, I promise.

Been down Danny Thomas Blvd.  more than a few times, I have worked that entire city and actually received hazard pay for a few jobs.

I don't think I've been on Danny T in about 3 decades.  Judging from what you just said, I think I'll pass on it the next time I drive thru Mempho, too.

Nah, I KNOW I'll pass on it the next time I'm in Mempho.

Cities such as Memphis, Birmingham, and even Atlanta are suffering from the deterioration of the core city itself, but that only makes up approximately a quarter of the whole Metro Area. Most people "in Memphis" do not actually live in the Memphis city limits. Places such as Collierville, Bartlett, Germantown, Arlington, and Olive Branch are actually very nice areas. Same as if you ever meet someone from "Atlanta", they likely live in Sandy Springs, Tucker, Decatur, etc. When you go to a city to party, you can't judge the whole city by its entertainment district and inner city. Everyone in the Memphis Metro does not live 3 blocks from Beale Street.

I drove thru there a few weeks ago on the way to Tunica, quickly! Saw alot of old furniture littering the sides of the streets and alot of unsavory characters loitering the chicken joints and gas stations. Im glad we didnt need gas.
So you drove down HWY 61 on your way to Tunica and base your jugement on that. That's the same ignorance I run in to when I go to California and tell people I grew up in Arkansas and they really think Arkansans are barefoot and without electricity.
That stretch of Memphis is in one of the worse areas of town.  There are much better parts.
