Anyone know what furs, such as, coons, minks, fox, bobcats, and otters are going for now-a-days?  Used to trap years ago.  Back then coon furs were going for $25-$35.  Last I heard, they were selling for less than $5.

i sold a truck load of really nice coon hides - last time was about 4 years ago - for $4-$7 each depending on size.  I've heard a couple times they would breifly be up to $10-12 over the last few years.  Buut, i havent' heard anything THIS year, so hey anybody know??? I'd like to know too.

What's the difference in a civet cat and a skunk?  I saw where some one sold a badger hide too.  I'm scared of badgers, I guess beavers are my favorite.
I said...LSU has often been an overrated team.

That ignoramus Draconian Sanctions said..if we're overrated, why are we ranked higher than you are?

Thanx for the heads up Wayne. I've never been to anything like this, but I'm thinking about going.

Are these furs tanned or what? I'm completely clueless about this entire event.

They are raw.  The buyers will be buying these furs to sell to tannerys and furriers for coats, collars, etc.

Thanx for the info.....How much would it cost to get one tanned and where in the world could you get it done at a reasonable price? Taxidermist around batesville wants 150$ or more to get everything tanned.

Thanks for the info Wayne.  Those prices suck.  I really want to teach my son the art of trapping, but with these prices, it's not worth the time it takes to skin them.  I guess we could trap a few coons and sell the meat.

depends on what kind of hide.  Some taxidermy's will just flesh the hide and send it off for tanning and washing...  In this case usually a coon is MUCH cheaper than say a deer hide for instance which is likewise obviously much cheaper than a bear hide... so it depends

Ya'll got my curiosity up on tanning cost.  I did a quick search and found several tanneries, this place:  http://www.uberleather.com/tanning.html

Will tan a deer hide for $43, so something like a coon should be a good bit cheaper one would think.

Thanx for the info. I might buy a few and send them off. I'm working on some stuff for a ceder log cabin my wife and I hope to build someday.

I had to modify this post.....I nearly forgot to ask where in the world this thing is in Russellville? Will there be very many people there?

Wayne, is it really allowed to buy the raw skins at this event.  I assumed only licensed/registered fur buyers would be buying ... I've never been so i may be wrong, but i had the impression this was not for the public to go buy raw stuff.  Just don't want deshahog to drive all the way from batesville and be let down.

Spit I didn't have any idea anything like this could happen. My dad is gonna come up with me. I'd be looking at getting a bobcat, polecat and possibly some coon and deer.

from looking at the web site it looks like it would be open, just a $10 fee to register as a buyer....but being you are traveling that far, a phone call would be a wise investment, it certainly isn't worth that trip to eat at the (in)famous whataburger!  Wayne could probably answer this but I bet he has no electricity!

I have a good friend that is a trapper. He has caught around 150 coyotes and fox so far this winter. He gets $75 each for them. This is live for the running pen market. They are  not worth near that much dead.
Swinging on the two and the four.

deshahawg

How in the world does he catch them live and where does he keep them when he gets them caught?

deshahawg

Wonder if this thing has been canceled because of the weather?

No.  All you have to do is contact AGFC and pay your license fee and get your report forms.

Amen I have 30-50 traps oiled and hanging in the Carport Rafters on my parents farm.   Not worth the hassle.

I did also.  BTW, desha, the black yote went for $31.  Here are some pics...

And if you'd never skinned a beaver, there was a demonstration on how to do it!

Looks like it would have been interesting.  I can't say I have ever seen a black yote, I have killed a many of them but never seen a black one

deshahawg

That was pretty good! I need to find me some black coyotes.

He catches them in "soft catch" leg hold traps. They have rubber padded jaws. Keeps them in some pens at his house. Last week he caught a black coyote in Lee Co. Gets double {$150} for any black or odd colored coyote. They show up better in the running pens.
Swinging on the two and the four.

deshahawg

That's a pretty good deal. I'm suprised that he can keep them in a cage. Do they not dig out? See if you can get a picture of his cages posted on here.

cypert2

His cages are up off the ground and have wire bottoms.
