Who will win the 2008 home run derby?

Lance Berkman - Astros
Ryan Bruan - Brewers
Dan Uggla - Marlins
Chase Utley - Phillies
Josh Hamilton - Rangers
Evan Longoria - Rays
Justin Morneau - Twins
Grady Sizemore - Indians

FaytownHog

It seems like a low year for the homerun derby. Only a couple of big names, and not THAT big of one's at that. But we'll see. Maybe they'll knock the cover off the ball!

FaytownHog

I picked morneau. It just seems like the big names dont usually win it

AirForceHog

If it turns, burns, banks or rolls, crew chiefs made it happen.

John Futrall

Evan Longoria.....I hear he's pretty "desperate" to win this year

Give me Sizemore...he's been on fire lately...

WMHawgfan

It will most likely be a lefty. The way Yankee stadium is laid out is a huge advantage to the lefties. I will take Utley.

Berkman has been in the past few and faired nicely when it was in Houston.  He's a switch hitter so he should like Yankee Stadium.

hawgslop00

I think it'll be Hamilton or Berkman

gutshot

I'll go with Uggla over Longoria in the Finals.

ErieHog

I went with Morneau based on the following logic:

He's left-handed;  he's familiar with the hitting backgrounds in Yankee Stadium (something that can't be said for all of the NL players who have, at best, limited exposure to picking the ball up against that background);  he's a better line-drive hitter, and the short right field porch rewards that even more than skying the ball; he has defeated his entire team in a Morneau-vs.-Squad HR derby at a Yankee Stadium BP.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

I bought into the lefty-advantage thing last year in San Francisco, and was proved wrong by Vlad the Bad.  That's why I'm going against the grain with Uggla this year.

Good to see Hamilton tear it up.  He better save himself for round 2

FaytownHog

hamilton is tearing it up right now!

Yeah;  he might overdo it in the first round, though.   There's that whole problem with hitting too many in the first and second rounds, to secure getting to the final, and having nothing left when both hitters start over at 0.

FaytownHog

josh hamilton with a new single round home run record! (28 HR)

jcmojica23

What a performance!!!  After everything that young man has been through it is good to see him overcome the odds and get to where he is now... Congrats Josh

FaytownHog

he seemed really humble about it too, he wasn't even going to talk to the reporter until she went and got him

The_Hill

Man, Josh Hamilton is truly an awe inspiring individual...what a class act
John, I was first team All-State. I can put the ball anywhere I want to. I'll make it rain out here.

anyone else see the cop grab the kid by the throat when they went after the hamilton homerun ball that hit on the black area in center.

Being a huge Ranger fan I have read up on him and watched every interview since the day the Rangers traded for him.  I haven't seen him argue one call this year and he uses every opportunity he gets to let people know God is the only reason he is in the position he is today.

FaytownHog

Haha the cop wasnt playing....For you Rangers fans I am jealous that we dont have Hamilton on are team haha.  But he is a class act no doubt

Ok not to change the subject but all the talk about how Hamilton has turned is life around got me thinking.  Maybe Matt could use his story to help motivate himself for a strong comeback.

FaytownHog

that would be nice. lord knows he needs something to motivate him. and yea, that did change the subject. seems like everyone is just waiting around to see hamilton hit again

Morneau won't hit more than 7; if Hamilton gets that many, it's over.

He only mustered 4 in the 2nd round, so I'm hoping he still is gassed :)

There's no reason to believe he wasn't trying in the 2nd round whatsoever.

He took his cuts, and hit a couple of bombs.  He also made 10 outs, just like everyone else.

Well, it's down to 2 outs and 3 HRs for the win.  Let's see how it ends!
