Manziel was a 3 star.. Cobi-3 star

This list shows how many stars did the 2012 All SEC team coming in..

I follow these guys on Facebook and thought it was a pretty cool post to share

1-2*(kicker), 8-3*s, 10-4*s, 5-5*s

Found it interesting that all the 5 stars are on defense. Nice to see Cobi on the list, I really hope he lights up the League, kid can play.

I'm still bitter about missing out on Patterson at Tenn.

Why? I mean, he's great but he would've played one year for an non-bowl eligible Arkansas team and then went to the NFL (he just declared).

Bubba's Bruisers

Lot's of 4 and 5 stars on that list.  The only 2 star is a kicker.

2*s is all a kicker ever gets.  Has anybody ever seen a 3*kicker?

Turminator

Any one know many total 4 and 5 star players are there each year compared to the total number of 3 stars in the country?

Peyton Hillis. 5* at every position, including coach.

Seriously though I don't pay attention with kickers either. That's why I clarified the only 2* was just the kicker.

In case this isn't rhetorical...there are significantly more 3's than 4 and 5's combined.

Interesting how most of the star power is on D, and lots of 3* on O.

I would be interested to see the other conferences' breakdown.  I bet we'd see mostly 3* guys.  The top talent flocks to the SEC.

Well of course.  The WAC won't have many four and five star players on their all WAC team because those players don't exist in that conference.  We would be very competitive in the WAC.

I guess I was referring to the B1G, B12, PAC12, ACC, etc.... The WAC wasn't a conference that crossed my mind.

Regardless, the point is that in the conference in which we compete...we aren't holding our own in recruiting.

Recruiting: Ranking the SEC's Best Football Rosters
Athlon Sports analyzes how the rosters in the SEC stack up nationally.
H/T MrSEC: Athlon Sports takes a look at recruiting rankings and real-life wins.

QuoteRecruiting rankings have their detractors. Yes, evaluating 16- and 17-year-old kids is an inexact science. No, star rankings aren't the only thing that matters. Yes, leadership (e.g., Nick Saban) is more important than national recruiting rankings (See Auburn).

But using national team recruiting rankings to attempt to pinpoint how "talented" any given roster is can be an interesting and illuminating practice.

So what do the team recruiting rankings teach us about the SEC:
He who has the best players, wins the game

What happened to Auburn and Tennessee?
Since the 2008 football season, the Tigers and Vols have had a combined seven different coaches. They are two of the SEC's biggest underachievers and one of the obvious reasons has been coaching, because both programs recruit at an elite level...

Bobby Petrino is THAT good
From 2009 to 2011, Arkansas was 29-10 overall and 15-9 in the SEC under Bobby Petrino. His recruiting classes in Fayetteville ranked no higher than seventh (2009) in the SEC recruiting rankings and cracked the top 20 nationally just once. Otherwise, Arkansas finished ninth or tenth in the SEC rankings every cycle. It proves that not only can a team win big in the SEC (10-11 wins) with a recruiting class ranked outside of the top 20 but that Petrino (aka, elite leadership) was the great equalizer. As soon as he stepped away, the 10th-best roster in the league played like it...

Where did the players on the 2012 Associated Press All-SEC team rank as high school prospects by the ESPN recruiting folks?

Nine other quarterbacks who signed with SEC schools that year were ranked higher. Among them: Kiehl Frazier (Auburn), Christian LeMay (Georgia), Jerrard Randall (LSU), Justin Worley (Tennessee), Maikhail Miller (Ole Miss), Brandon Allen (Arkansas) and Jacoby Brissett (Florida). Manziel was ranked as the No. 97 prospect overall in the state of Texas...

Whereas only four of the 12 offensive players (counting the all-purpose player) on this season's All-SEC team were ESPN 150 prospects, nine of the 11 defensive players made the ESPN 150 cut as high school recruits. Eight of the 11 were ranked among the top 10 prospects nationally at their position.

The only two who weren't ESPN 150 prospects were A&M defensive end Damontre Moore and State cornerback Johnthan Banks.

QuoteDE: Jadeveon Clowney, South Carolina -- A five-star prospect and ranked No. 1 overall in the ESPN 150 in 2011...

DE: Damontre Moore, Texas A&M -- A three-star prospect and unranked in the ESPN 150 in 2010. Ranked as the No. 48 defensive end prospect nationally. Evaluating how the 5-star recruits on Auburn's roster have panned out

Former five-star prospects Corey Lemonier, Michael Dyer and Christian Westerman could all have been part of the 2013 team, but Lemonier is an early entry for the NFL Draft, Dyer left after discipline problems and Westerman decided to transfer to Arizona State earlier this year.

With another National Signing Day approaching, here's a look at the six former five-star prospects on Auburn's current roster and how they've fared...

CLASS OF 2010

SHON COLEMAN, OT, OLIVE BRANCH (MISS.) HIGH

Where he stands: Coleman, ranked a five-star prospect by Rivals.com, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia shortly after signing his national letter of intent, beat the disease and then spent more than a year recovering to rejoin the football team. Back on the roster in 2012, Coleman didn't play, but the NCAA recently granted Coleman an extra year of eligibility, allowing him four years to play...

CLASS OF 2011

KIEHL FRAZIER, QB, SHILOH CHRISTIAN, SPRINGDALE, ARK.

Where he stands: Frazier, who was named USA Today's National Offensive Player of the Year and awarded five stars by Scout.com, played as a freshman, rushing for 327 yards and three rushing touchdowns as Auburn's Wildcat quarterback. Handed the starting job to open 2012, Frazier struggled mightily in five starts and eventually lost the job to Clint Moseley...

Crimson Tide's Class of 2008 included five players who were first-round NFL draft picks - Julio Jones, Marcell Dareus, Mark Barron, Mark Ingram and Dont'a Hightower. Two other members of the class were second-round picks - Terrence Cody and Courtney Upshaw - and three more members of the class are expected to be drafted this year - Barrett Jones, Michael Williams and Robert Lester.

The class includes one Heisman Trophy winner (Ingram) and one Outland Trophy winner (Jones).

Quote2. Florida 2007

If there's one SEC class in the last 10 years that can come close to Alabama's 2008 class in terms of first-round talent, it's the group that Urban Meyer put together at Florida in 2007. Joe Haden, Maurkice Pouncey and Mike Pouncey were all first-round picks, and the class also included an eventual No. 1 overall pick - Cam Newton...

Paul Oliver. Kregg Lumpkin. Brandon Miller. Kade Weston. Those are not the four best players in Georgia football's recent history. None of them was ever even a first-team all-SEC selection. But between 2003-05, those four were the highest-rated recruits who signed with Georgia. They were the only prospects rated as a composite "five star" by the recruiting services.

"If we haven't improved, then we probably should be fired," said Chad Simmons of Scout.com, who is in his ninth year as a recruiting analyst.

...

What does this mean? Basically, that being a five-star recruit in 2013 means a bit more than it did in 2008 -- and a whole lot more than in 2003."We get a bad rap," Schurburtt said of recruiting analysts. "If you look at it, look at the first-round draft picks in the NFL, these guys aren't batting that higher a percentage than we are. Football is a tough game to evaluate, because so much is between the head and the chest. You can never climb into a guy's head and see what he's thinking, and you can't climb in his chest and see how he's feeling."

http://www.macon.com/2013/02/02/2340653/recruiting-star-ratings-a-bit.html

There's one aspect for which the rating services cannot be held accountable.

If a five-star RB wants to sign to be one of the twelve RBs at Bama and doesn't pan out, it's not the services' fault.

Reserve defensive end/outside linebacker Dexter Morant has left the school "due to academic considerations," according to UGA.

The rising redshirt junior from Manning, S.C., never played in a game for the Bulldogs. He worked on the scout team but was often sidelined during a career that included two shoulder surgeries.

Morant made news before his first practice at Georgia in 2010 when he left the team but returned after four days.

I'm never going to say that star ratings have no meaning because over the years we know they often do have significant predictive power. However, at the same time we also know that it's only PART of the equation. There are so many variables as to whether or not a young man works out being a star as not. Heck, we also know of more than just a few instances where lower rated kids (3 and even 2 stars) have come out of no where to have amazing careers at a school and in more than a few instances even beyond. We've all seen kids who've torn up the playing fields in high school seemingly disappear once they got to the college level. Whether or not it turned out to be the academics, injuries, the particular system being run, the lack of effort/training, other distractions, disciplinary problems or whatever we all recognize there are (almost) countless pitfalls awaiting any young person in today's world. No doubt some coaches have a seemingly uncanny "magical touch" when it comes to picking out talent. Heck, even the mighty Nike Saban has found more than one or two "diamonds in the rough" (not that he's had to resort to many) and been able to develop them into something special. However, even the best evaluator isn't going to hit it every time because of one or more of those "uhh, ohh" factors mentioned previously. To some degree it will always be a "crapshoot" no matter how much time, effort, or talent is involved on all sides. That's one reason why you sign your kids, try to coach 'em up and take your chances...It's another reason why, in my opinion,  good staffs tend to earn everything they get paid.

Alabama makes it look so easy.

It needs a running back. It signs several. And not just any running backs, but some of the very best, according to recruiting services.

It seems contradictory to my theory that the only thing a running back wants more than the ball is a chance to start right away. Tennessee running backs coach Jay Graham believes the theory is still valid.

"I think all running backs want the ball," Graham said on signing day. "And they want to play early."

So how do you explain Alabama signing four running backs Wednesday? All of those backs surely will have to fall in line behind T.J. Yeldon, who was sensational last season as a freshman. Also, don't forget about consensus high school All-American Dee Hart or 240-pound Jalston Fowler, promising running backs who missed last season with injuries.

"The thing about running backs, they have confidence," said Graham, a former running back who didn't mind signing with the Vols when they were loaded with good running backs. "They have confidence they can compete if you've got four guys in a signing class or five guys."

Whether running backs are confident they can overtake the competition or patient enough to wait for playing time, national champion Alabama keeps stockpiling them. But Alabama isn't the only SEC program that gets the running backs it needs or wants.

Last season, LSU was so stacked with talent at running back that the two players who began the season as Nos. 3 and 4 on the depth chart both declared for the NFL draft after their junior seasons.

Georgia was in dire need of running backs in the last recruiting class. It didn't just sign one elite running back; it signed two. In fact, one Georgia running back actually helped recruit the other one.

Long 8 page read but Stars do count at least 2/3's of the time and the other 1/3 is just a roll of the dice.

Bama is in Tank mode right now and is set to run ruffshod over anybody that stands in their way.  Saban is to Bama like Patton was to the 8th armored division.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.
