After its first conference loss earlier this week, Alabama coach Avery Johnson and his players spent Thursday watching film for 90 minutes. It was an exhaustive session that lasted a bit longer than usual. On the court, Johnson conducted a grueling free-throw drill, penalizing missed foul shots with some extra running.

The glimpse inside Johnson's program as it prepared for its road game against LSU on Saturday captures the essence of what his team is all about -- effort. Crimson Tide may not be the most skilled. It may not have the best players.

"And we haven't always been the smartest team," Johnson acknowledged Friday.

But Bama will work for what it gets. Tide put itself in position to win its third straight SEC game last Tuesday against Florida. Alabama led by six points with less than 11 minutes remaining in regulation. But poor free-throw shooting and turnovers conspired to scuttle Alabama's upset bid. Tide missed half of its 32 foul shots and a better performance from the line could have changed the complexion --

LSU is now 9-7, 1-4 SEC; Alabama is 10-6, 3-1 SEC. LSU will play at Auburn, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday..

Bama ended game with 25-10 run in final 4:45.
