The Toronto Blue Jays should move down to New Orleans

I was just thinking about this today and it's really surprised me that nobody's tried to market an MLB team to New Orleans.  I mean the locals down there between there and Baton Rouge seem plenty crazy about baseball and of course down in NOLA it seems like they'd take just about any reason to flock to the Superdome to watch a game of any kind in there.  On top of all this, the blue jays would get a way better following down there than up in TO, I mean nobody up in that city even gives a damn about baseball, I mean heck the Expos werent gettin nobody at their games so they packed it up and headed to DC, and I guarantee ya the blue jays see even more empty seats which makes me even surprised there's still a team there.  Bottom line I'd say the jays owner should wise up and take his team down to where there's better weather and a way higher fan base, because nobody wants to play for a team that gets you no fans cheering you on.

DC didn't have a minor league team like New Orleans does.  New Orleans is home to the Zephyrs who are the Marlins AAA affiliate.  Plus, baseball isn't as crazy down there as you might be led to believe.  Yeah, LSU dominates paid attendance every year, but their actual attendance might be worse than the Hogs.  They had the largest actual regular season crowd a couple weeks ago of like 10,300 or something like that when we have had 6-7 crowds largers than that in regular season games.

Plus, who wants to live in New Orleans?

Uh-- Toronto has no issues with supporting the Jays.    They bounce  from 10th to 23rd in attendance, depending mostly on the competitiveness of the team-- and 9 million Canadians live within 100 miles of Toronto-,  and 60% of the US population is within the commuter flight radius of Toronto-   the city of Toronto itself is larger than Chicago.

You want a relocation candidate from MLB?  Kansas City is a significantly better relocation option or Cleveland.      It's still not a good one, because of demographics, but at least it's semi-arguable.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

It's been 21 years since they last drew 2 million in attendance; during that time frame the Blue Jays have pulled more than 2 million  12 times.

The Rays and the Marlins are the ones that should be dealt with by MLB. Neither of their crowds are ever worth a damn. They should be contracted into one team and moved to a place that would give the new team strong support.

That wouldn't work. Both have been to a World Series within the past decade and they still didn't draw great crowds during the regular season.

Marlins drew about 1.3 million in 2003. The Rays about 1.8 in 2008.

They just don't draw good crowds down there no matter what.

There should just be consolidation. Scrap the Rays and Marlins. Move the Jays to Florida or OKC.

Yeah, that's why I thought OKC would fit nicely. It's dumb they places two teams in FL at pretty much once. Just didn't make sense. The Rays had a chance to become a successful franchinse I feel when they went to the World Series. They started seeing big crowds, unfortunately those big crowds saw that dump of a stadium. Had they gotten the new stadium-and not the Marlins-Maybe they would have gotten a fair shot.

The Rays still drew less than 2 million when they were at their best. Sad.

New Orleans does a poor job of supporting their basketball team and I'm pretty sure they also did a very poor job of supporting the Saints when they weren't very good.  I don't think a baseball team would work there.

Just baffles me why they thought 2 Florida teams at once virtually was a good idea. The Marlins weren't drawing crowds, why would the Rays? I never saw Dolphin Stadium full- even in their world series years. Of course, I was 5 in 98, so I could be remembering wrong. For whatever reason, they don't like sporting events there. Hell, the Heat had trouble this year at times with that.

It doesn't help the Marlins are run by an absolute moron, hated by all the players. I feel bad for Stanton. Such a waste of talent.

You're remembering correctly. The Marlins didn't have very good attendance in either of their WS years. They drew 1.3 million in 2003, their last WS.

What about somewhere like Portland? Oregon and OSU are huge and they seem to support the blazers fairly well.

Charlotte would be a good place. It would be a much better location for baseball than basketball.

The Floridians seem to get just as excited about spring training games.

Speaking of relocation.  How are the Giants (and Selig) able to keep the A's from moving to San Jose?

While we are on the moving subject, although it has nothing to do with baseball, does anybody else find it strange that the 49ers new stadium is actually about an hour away from San Francisco?

No, it is where the money and eyeballs would naturally lead it to be.

Yeah I understand it, just seems strange to be a team from San Francisco and not really play anywhere close to San Francisco.

Happens all the time.  Skins don't play in DC.  Cowboys don't play in Dallas, it's all about "painting on a clean canvas" as opposed to having to tear down existing infrustructure.

Money and eyeballs allow it to be there, but not lead it that way.  The Niners tried several times to utilize the area in and around Candlestick to build a new stadium.  They weren't looking to move.

Agreed, but regardless of distance, I think the biggest thing is the tax money that the "home" city is losing.
