Tennessee basketball: Myth of Yves Pons grows before Vols debut http://tnne.ws/2gRdtcC

QuoteTennessee basketball players call him Tarzan.

Some say the chiseled 18-year-old never lifted a weight until he joined the Vols. Fans saw him leap from just inside the foul line for a dunk last week. And his French accent makes him seem even more mysterious.

Yves Pons (pronounced Eve Pawns) sounds more like a mythical figure than a freshman small forward.

Three Points from No. 15 Tennessee's terrible, no-good, very-bad loss at Alabama on Saturday here in Tuscaloosa: http://bit.ly/2EhK5Ku

Quoteennessee wasn't the only ranked team to have a clunker this week.

But ... wow, Vols. Wow. Just .. wow.

Tennessee won 18 of its first 23 games this season, and the five losses were by a combined 30 points. And then Saturday happened. The Vols lost by 28 points. In one game.

Saturday also was Tennessee's first loss of the season to a team outside the top 50 in the RPI, but Alabama probably will jump back into the top 50 now.

Vols coach Rick Barnes said moments after the game that he was "baffled" by Saturday's performance, and that he didn't think it was possible for this team — a team he genuinely loves — to play that poorly. Barnes surely wasn't the only one to think that. That team in orange jerseys on Saturday looked nothing like the same team that was on the floor the past 23 games.

Rick Barnes gives possible explanation for Tennessee's poor performance against Alabama

QuoteTennessee was rolling through the back half of its schedule on a six-game win streak. Then, everything came crashing down in the 78-50 loss to Alabama at Coleman Coliseum. It was the most-lopsided loss in the history of the rivalry played at the arena.

Coach Rick Barnes offered up his explanation to reporters after the game, though he seemed to be as surprised as the fans.

"What happened [Saturday night] could happen any other game if we don't play the way we're capable of, and compete the way we're capable of," Barnes said. "We didn't do that. If it was an emotional letdown, it was all because of us being immature. The fact is, I'm baffled by it, to be honest with you. But we got what we deserved."

Tennessee has three upperclassmen on the roster — James Daniel, Admiral Schofield and Kyle Alexander — who get significant playing time. This is still a rather young team despite the number of minutes many of the upperclassmen have logged.

This could simply be a case of a young team resting on its laurels before achieving anything of real significance.

During the six-game win streak, the Vols finished off a season sweep of Kentucky and was ranked No. 15 in the country. There has even been some talk of the team potentially making a push for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The Vols would be a No. 4 seed if the tournament began today. [It does not.]

"Defensively, it was as bad as we've played all year long, obviously," Barnes said.

Rick Barnes has now won 20 games or more in 20 seasons as a head coach. Tennessee holds off Florida in Knoxville. Vols have been a major surprise nationally.

Florida coach Mike White on Tennessee: That team plays as hard as any team in the country. They play so hard.

Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes far from satisfied after win at Ole Miss

QuoteRick Barnes wants to see a championship level of play out of Tennessee, so he wasn't satisfied with the 73-65 win at Ole Miss on Saturday.

"A win is a win this time of year, but we were terrible coming out of the locker room in the second half, and it was the same the other night against Florida," the coach of the No. 19-ranked Vols (21-7, 11-5) said on the SEC Network.

"We allowed our offense to let them get out in transition too much in the second half."

Tennessee ultimately prevailed, clinching a double bye in the SEC Tournament with the victory.

Barnes appeared in no mood to celebrate, knowing the Vols have work to do before a challenging road trip to Mississippi State on Tuesday night.

COLUMN: Gritty, come-from-behind win a fitting way for #Vols to clinch SEC title: http://bit.ly/2tbqJS2

QuoteSure, it would have been nice for Tennessee to pound Georgia through the wooden floor of Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday night and spend the final minutes taking an SEC championship victory lap.

A scenario like that certainly would have been better for the collective blood pressure of the Volunteer State.

But it wouldn't have fit these Vols.

The way Saturday went did fit them, though. It fit them as snug as Admiral Schofield's soccer-schmedium jersey.

It was hard. Really hard. But it's supposed to be hard. The hard is what makes it great.

Tennessee's gritty-as-gritty-gets win over the Bulldogs was the perfect way for this team to cement its legacy as an unforgettable, feel-good SEC champion.

Virtually nothing went right for Tennessee much of Saturday night. The Vols fell behind early to a team that's had their number for years, and a team that made seemingly every shot it attempted in the first half.

Georgia coach Mark Fox isn't the most popular man in Athens at the moment, but he turns into Norman Dale every time his team plays a team coached by Tennessee's Rick Barnes. Fox's Nevada Wolfpack upset Barnes' Texas Longhorns in the 2005 NCAA Tournament, and Fox's Georgia Bulldogs were 4-0 against Barnes' Tennessee Volunteers heading into Saturday night...

As hard as Tennessee played Saturday, there were a long list of things that made it appear to even the most untrained eye that it just wasn't the Vols' day. And it was a shame, considering everything at stake.

This Tennessee team is remarkably resilient, though, and time and time again it found a way to get off the deck and fight back.

A defense that's been one of the nation's best all season was at its best in the second half, holding Georgia to three points in the final 8 minutes, 29 seconds. That helped the Vols end the game on a 9-0 run that turned a 61-57 deficit into a 66-61 win.

The players on the court weren't the only ones in orange helping the cause, though. A beyond-capacity crowd of 22,237 never wavered in its deafening roar...

Rick Barnes: 3 keys to a Tennessee basketball win over Kentucky in SEC Tournament title game

QuoteWhat happened in the regular season were two Vols victories, the first season sweep since 1999, and the first Tennessee win at Rupp Arena in Lexington in 12 years.

"You can throw out everything that happened in Knoxville and Rupp Arena," Barnes said after the Vols beat Arkansas 84-66 on Saturday.

"It will be a Big Blue crowd, obviously."

1. Grant Williams must play big

"We have to hope we can keep Grant Williams out of foul trouble," Barnes said.

2. Transition baskets

Kentucky's size and length can cause problems for opponents in the half court.
[Vols limited turnovers to single-digits in big win over Hogs.]

3. Clean the glass
[UK was woeful on the offensive boards while shooting 80%+ v. Bama.]

Barnes didn't win the SEC with five-stars. None of his Tennessee classes have been ranked high, and the highest-rated player in each class is barely in the current rotation.

Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes: 'I'm glad it hurts a little'

QuoteDALLAS — Tennessee basketball coach Rick Barnes has led four different programs to 23 NCAA Tournaments, but the elimination game loss never gets any easier to swallow.

"It's always a tough way to lose a basketball game, the buzzer-beaters," Barnes said after the No. 3-seed Vols (26-9) were eliminated by No. 11-seed Loyola-Chicago on Saturday night at American Airlines Center.

Ramblers (30-5) won 63-62 when Clayton Custer's twisting jumper rattled around the rim and fell in with 3.6 seconds left, and then Jordan Bone's jumper at the top of the key rattled around the rim and came out as time expired.

"I told them once we step back and decompress from all of it, we've done a lot," said Barnes, whose team was picked to finish 13th in the SEC in the preseason. "We won't be picked to finish 13th next year in the league, or 14th."

Barnes said he believes the loss will serve as a motivator for the Vols, who return all of their players except senior guard James Daniel III.

"You know they're crushed. We all are," Barnes said. "But I said, 'hey, I'm glad it hurts a little bit because sometimes I've had some teams you wonder if it hurt deep enough.

"We've got a lot of guys coming back, all but one, and they can use it as a catalyst to want to get back here and try to go deeper and further."

This the Volunteers' last stand

Fit vs. higher ceiling? Dissecting which direction Tennessee should take

QuoteWe were discussing if Tennessee should go for fit or overall talent with its one open scholarship in 2018.

I thought the coaching staff should go all-in on point guard Tyler Harris [sounds like a composite name for a Vol Men's player over the last 10 years]. He's a solid all-around point who could step into the James Daniel backup role. It'd be a seamless transition and Harris has the ability to grow into a starting SEC point guard down the line.

If Tennessee turned up its recruitment for Harris, I think they could be in the conversation.

The Vols have also been recruiting 4-star guard James Akinjo. He had signed with UConn before coach Kevin Ollie was fired which allowed Akinjo out of his National Letter of Intent. Tennessee quickly jumped into the recruitment. The Vols plan to host Akinjo on an official visit next weekend.

Akinjo would provide more immediate impact than Harris. He wouldn't be as natural a fit, but perhaps that's a good thing.

Coach Rick Barnes signed grad transfer Daniel and junior college prospect Chris Darrington after the 2016-17 season. He said his guards couldn't make the scoring plays down the stretch of big games.

Something I've said about #Vols hoops the past few years: Once Barnes had been here for a bit, it became really easy to tell whether a guy was their kind of guy or not. They have a type. Once you get used to it, it's easy to spot. They have a very clear culture.

If you want to play basketball at Tennessee, you will play defense. Even if you're a five-star prospect. Fortunately that's no issue for these #Vols.
