The rest of the suspensions from the Biogenesis case will be released Monday.  A-Rod is the only one of about 12 that will receive more than 50 games and might be the only appeal as well.  This is going to get really, really ugly before it is all said and done.

This is going to get as ugly as A-Rod wants it to be.  If he really tried to interfere with the investigations then he's screwed, with this not being his first offense and all.  About time for Selig to make a statement and give him the boot.

Technically it is his first offense. He admitted to using before, but has never actually been busted for it.

You'd think that would give him a fighting chance, despite MLB supposedly having evidence that he used in '10, '11, & '12.

Which is why they won't suspend him under the drug testing regime, but the best interests of the game provisions of the CBA.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Yep. That is what I was referring to a few days ago. They knew that a drug testing suspension wouldn't get the job done. They needed something heavier to get the penalty they wanted.

Really doesn't make a difference in this case. They are going after him at a different angle.

I know what you are saying, but I don't know how MLB and the commissioner get away with suspending 11 guys for 50 games and one...technically a first time offender...for 211 games, especially if A-Rod takes them to court.

I don't see how Selig saying, "I was really POed at him so I decided to effectively end his career" is going to carry the day.

I don't think the "interfering with the investigation" explanation holds water, either.  This isn't a criminal investigation, and as far as we know A-Rod didn't threaten to break anyone's kneecaps if he testified.  All the players involved took steps to try to cover up their use of PEDs.

I don't really see how he can do such a long suspension either considering he ended up suspending him under the same thing as all the others, the drug policy. I could understand there being a difference if he suspended him under the clause in the CBA we were talking about previously since he supposedly destroyed a bunch of documents and was rumored to be recruiting others to the clinic.

He didn't use that clause though, so I don't know how he can do that.

The angle is this, I think:

1. The 12 players were given the choice and they accepted the 50 game suspension and no publicity of the details of their case.
2. A-Rod gets to have his life overturned due to his appeal.

Supposedly, MLB did not have to poke through private files (A-Rod's email) to get the evidence against him.

There appears to be evidence that he led others to Bigenesis and lied about it. Or, in some way, that he was beyond just a user.

Of course, he has $25M +/- on the line and he can hire a helluva attorney and still have pocket change left over.

In yet another intriguing twist, reports state that A-Rod's "inner circle" leaked the names of Cervelli and Braun to the media in the Biogenesis scandal.

Heard the new nickname today - "A-Rat". Love it.

Hope Cervelli whips his ass in the clubhouse.

Lackey was satisfied with just shutting him down in a 0-4 night. Dempster however, went ahead and plunked him on national tv Sunday night. Then got fined and suspended five games for his efforts.

Dempster got of easy as could be. He will only miss 1 start and only got fined $2500. Girardi got fined $5000 and he really didn't do anything. I'm not even a Yankee fan and I thought that was bull. Not sure how you don't eject a guy when he throws at a guy 3 times then finally hits him with his 4th, but throw out the manager as soon as he gets to the top step to protest.

I disagree only on two points. Dempster threw the first pitch behind the scumbag to send a message for sure. The second and third pitches he was just trying to hit the inside corner to stay away from the middle of the plate. But once the count got to 3-0 I think Dempster just said screw it at that point and went ahead and plunked him. I would hate to think it took a professional pitcher 4 pitches to hit a batter. The second point is Girardi didn't get tossed as soon as he left the dugout. If you review the replay again you will see he got tossed when he was arguing with the ump and slammed his ball cap to the ground. Girardi also came real close to striking the ump with his fist.

Still no reason Giriardi's fine should be double that of the guy who actually hit the batter. He may have came close to striking the ump, but he didn't. You can't fine people for things they almost did.

Until you posted I had no idea what they were fined. Last I read the fines were undisclosed.

The fines were leaked later last night. It's not like $2500 or $5000 hurt either one of them, just seems strange that Girardi would get double what they gave Dempster. MLB is definitely not trying to hide their dislike of A-Rod.

If the MLB truly wanted to reveal their dislike of ARoid they wouldn't have given Dempster a suspension at all.

They pretty much didn't. 5 game WITH pay. He MIGHT miss 1 start, but they could just bump him back a day in the rotation and he wouldn't even miss a start.

As it turns out Dempster is being pushed back by Farrell and won't pitch again until Aug 30th I believe. Not for discipline reasons but just because he isn't that reliable starter right now anyway and with the fact that Boston has two days off in the next week or so Farrell can juggle his starting rotation around a little. IOWs, his suspension doesn't really hurt Boston much at all.

I think there were probably a lot of Boston fans hoping his suspension was longer to keep him off the mound.

There were some of us that had that idea. lol. Personally I had nothing against him for plunking Roidriguez. Just regretted that he did it as early in the game as he did and wished he had done it with the first pitch.

Jayson Nix looks nothing like A-Rat, yet he's the guy who gets plunked and hurt. How could BoSox pitchers be so blind that they confuse the two? :)

Nix was plunked by a Toronto pitcher Wednesday. Not the Red Sox. How could you be so blind as to confuse the two teams?  :o

It's one thing for MLB players to be a fraternity that administers justice on its own, but when you get the commissioner involved in meting our frontier justice...i.e., giving one guy who has never officially tested positive for PEDs a 211 game suspension while everyone else gets 50-65, then giving the old "nudge, nudge, wink, wink" to a pitcher who throws at him four times before finally hitting him...

It's bush league.

The Commissioner is supposed to be an impartial arbiter who treats everyone the same whether he personally likes them or not.  It's not his place to "teach someone a lesson" or get POed and decide to hammer a guy no one likes.  Selig has made it personal with A-Rod.
