OK.....I agree, we have heard enough about Mark McGuire and it all needs to go away.  However, not before I drive this last true story nail in the coffin of truth.

Summer of 88 and I was the Ass Mgr of Gold's gym in Arlington, TX (360&Arkansas Lane Blvd).  I wasn't really a huge baseball fan that year, and didn't keep up with the who's who in MLB.  I'm working the front counter of the gym and in walks Jose Conseco, Mark McGuire, Coach Jim Lefever, Eckersley, and another guy that I never ID'd.  At the time I thought they were some of the local gym rats coming in for a workout.  Funny thing is they all just kept walking by the front counter without presenting their Gold's gym ID card and I finally yelled out at them,"Hey guys I need to see ID's"...(what a idiot I must have looked like).  Lefever came over and apologized and introduced himself and said who they all were and that they're in town for a series with the Rangers and they always come to this gym when they are in town.  At this point Jose and McGuire had already helped themself to some spandex and sweat shirts in the pro shop and headed to the dressing room.  Lefever was a very nice guy and actually gave me 4 tickets right behind their dugout for two different games.  So the coach and I sat in my office for over an hour with him speaking and of coarse I was listening.  What a talker that guy was.  I heard all about his career and his acting career in Hollywood. Jose and Mark came in several times and both guys were huge...blown up huge.  Mark obviously became much bigger over his career but I have to offer up my opinion which is somewhat an educated opinion on the subject of roids.  Being an X Razorback from the early 80's and watching many, many guys, popping and shooting...many well know names that you all know,  I grew to recognize an athlete that was on something from the way his skin looked, and the way they worked out. Remember, back in the early 80's was before the Ben Johnson Olympic media explosion and roids were handed out like candy in gyms back then, so I eye witnessed guys doubling size and strength in 8-9 months time, nose bleeds while in the middle of a squat or dead lift, guys getting under so much weight on the bench that their pec would rip and roll up like a popped rubberband.  Many used to overcome off season surgeries so to be ready for the following fall.  Jose and Mark both had tremendous bad acne on their neck,  shoulders, and back, as well as a puffiness that comes with certain types of juice(dyanabol, straight test, nelevar, and anadrol).  Both of these guys didn't look like baseball players....more like starting DT and TE for a football team.

Did I see a needle being shot in any Oakland A's players that day....no I did not.  However, from what I do know about the subject, and how it effects the human body, and how those two guys looked that day.....I would bet every dollar that I've ever touched that McGuire was at mid cycle on something.(cycle being a period of time that a person takes a weekly dose for so many weeks).  Now with that being said.  I don' t give a rat's ass about this subject or not.  I do think Mark McGwire is a major Class Act and has always been so.  He should be in the Hall some day.  Jose has had a much different path with his career and personal issues getting in his way, however he came out with the truth and was incriminated for it.  I'm not a big fan of either of these guys, but Jose deserves an apology from every polywog, bottom beeding journalist that jumped on the" lets bash Consecos bandwagon".  I hope he makes millions with his book.

Truth...it is what it is.

I by no means am a doctor and don't claim to be an  expert of any kind regarding roids.  I am clearly basing my statements and opinions on what was the latest, most commonly used roids available to big athletes back in 88.  Andro and Creatine wasn't a very big item in 88.  Not sure if even on the market at that time.  I have taken creating, while working out, so I can give first hand knowledge that neither one of your before mentioned supplements causes bad acne like injectable and pill form of the items I mentioned.  They are both a 90's product that became popular later.  Does andro enhance..yes but not like the substances I mentioned.  They could all cause acne and baldness.  I've seen many professional athletes and the types of juice that they were on at the time.  Many pro football, bodybuilders and WWF(back then) wrestlers worked out at our gym and so I was exposed to first hand knowledge about what was hot at the time.  Jose and Mark were playing around with much heavier stuff than creatine and Andro in 88.  Im talking acne that leaves deep scars in you skin like a chicken pox scar would.

So....question for you.....I am 41, and balding on the back portion of my head, ...I added creatine to my diet off and on in the 90's for at least 2 years....did that cause my balding?........because my mother's father and my father lost their hair the exact same way.

Again...not a expert...just perception of a true story event.

ImHogginIt.....when were you at UCA?

Interesting post.........Jerry the King , Huh?  Does anyone remember an Ex Hog All American lineman...S.K...strongest freak I remember being around back in the day.  Most people don't keep in mind that you just don't inject yourself and all of sudden a fine tuned monster.....you have to bust you ass in the weight room like never before and eat like 3 people in order to get results.  There is some disastrous side effects to many people I know that have used them.  Most have been from over use.  Back in the day(79-82), if a player actually had a doctor give him the juice, he would also get instructions of Do Not go over a 6-8 week cycle of taking it......and almost ever personal story that I know that ended with bad side effects have been from an individual that just statred to notice good results and would get sucked into a type of euphoria around his 6th week- cycle and like any drug became addicted to the results and continued on into a 12-sometimes 15 week cycle.  These are the individuals you hear about with heart problems, kidney failure, and what they call bitch-tits.  There have many, many other side effects from roids, and I certainly don't condone the use without a doctor's advice.

Psychologically roids are very addictive. You pack on muscle and a crap load of strength. Then ya go to parties and have sexy babes want to squeeze your muscles ( all of them ;D) Then when you get off the roids for an extended period you go back to your normal skinny assed self. You want to get those roids back in ya pretty quick then !

So your muscle size and strength go down pretty quick?  What actually is making muscle mass increase so fast?
I know a guy that used them for years while body building.  He was really huge and defiend.  He's in his 40's now and looks like he's 60.  He's had hip problems and joint problems and is limited in what he can do now.  Bad price to pay for some quick results that don't last.

You are putting in artificial testosterone at a rate much higher than your body produces naturally. When you do that your testes say " WTH why should we produce" and they shut down. That's why your sac shrivels up. Your "Male organ" ( damn our censor) does not shrink. That is a big myth.

Yep, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. I have no idea how people come up with some of these bs rumors about steriods.  I've done LOTS of research on them and had a lengthy discussion with my physician about them.  His opinion is, if they aren't abused, they can be helpful.

1. Your nuts atrophy because they don't produce the testosterone you are injecting.

2. Your nuts come back AFTER you get off of the juice for a while.

3. While injecting, it is much better than viagra, because testosterone is your bodies
natural viagra. In other words, you get wood like you did when you were a teenage boy in English class :)

4. You don't get "bitch tits" form testosterone, if you did, every man would develop them.  You get "bitch tits" after you stop getting erections and you have to take a female hormone to get wood again! This female hormone gives "gym tits".

Regarding baseball: I care less if they do them or not. AS LONG AS THE RECORD BOOKS REFLECT IT!!!!  The record books should have a *S* beside all the players who used Steriods.  And I gurandam tee you if Bonds breaks any BIG records, he will be BOOOOED off the field!!

It is so fukcing obvious that McGuire has done them and Bonds , and Canseco, And every other baldheaded, lurch forehead baseball player you see.

Sounds like genes. ;D  I'm just saying until it's proved I will have to believe MeGwire.  Like you said he has always been a stand up guy so I have no reason to doubt him. Now Sammy on the other hand, I am not sure about. Maybe it was just corked bats. ;)

I think they're both on the juice, but I have no idea why you'd think McGwire wasn't on them and not Sosa.  At least Sammy said "no" under oath.  Probably lying, but McGwire didn't even say he never used them.

Nah, I'm in school Hornet Hog from the St. Louis Area.  I wasn't dogging it's just that everyone has had a "McGuire".  It wasn't cheating when he was in MLB, they didn't test for it then.   Does that mean it was right no but in the 80's 'roids was everywhere, and now to say he isn't a Hall Of Famer is absurd.  Steriods doesn't help your hand eye coordination.  It doesn't help you hit a round ball square, maybe a little farther, but McGwire hit 49 Home Runs as a ROOKIE.  If you look at his pictures from then he was a big man.  He put on all that muscle in his Early 20's when he got into the show.  Maybe he used steriods maybe he didn't, but someone like Barry Bonds and Brett Boone who all of sudden ballooned in their Mid-30's and went from 20 something HR hitters to all of sudden hitting 40+....something isn't right.

this post is the  epitomy of the Mcguire  ;D apologists.

take the red lensed spectacles off and face reality. Big Mac cheated just as much as Barry did, don't try to separate them on this issue

Illinihog

Is it really cheating if they aren't testing for it and it isn't illegal?  Because until now it wasn't being tested for.  So actually Bonds and McGwire didn't cheat.  But ya know I'll take the red glasses off.....

HornetHog

This issue will always have a split in the road.  As an X athlete I can understand both sides.  Illinihog may have a point, because as an athlete you do whatever you can to become better at that sport during that period of time that you happen to be in.  You workout like a maniac, diet, avoid bad habits(smoking, drinking, narcotics).....and during that time it wasn't illegal to take steroids.  You do whatever that it takes to be better than the next guy.  That's the mantallity in our society.

Now with that being said.......the other side of the road may have totally different view on this issue.  This side is a more purest view...... A total SportsFan.  This side is the side that invisions what if.......what if the 78 Steelers played the 93 Cowboys.  This side somehow visualizes Babe Ruth standing next to Barry Bonds as they both swing for the fence, and say, "Hey...that's not fare".   I think as our society changes so should the limits of what's exceptable and unacceptable.  If you were to take steroids totally out of the picture and compare.....today's athletes are much, much, better than in our past.  The pitchers alone are incredible, so why shouldn't our batters be the same.  I do not condone roids what so ever, I  am merely looking at this from an outside the bubble angle.

There are people out there who also feel if a person is fortune enough to make millions of dollars to help support the next three generations of his family and in doing so has to take a type a steriod to compete at whatever sport he is in ...that's his sacrifice and choice to make.... and good for him.  As to the younger kids that are killing themselves and having health problems with the use of steriods...I have one question....where the hell are their parents?!  Why aren't you more involved with your children so that you notice whats going on in your child's life..................idiots.  I'm sorry but the father that was on the panel that was grilling the Major league players was a freakin idiot.  I feel very bad for his loss becasue I am a father of two, however lets don't lose focus here.  Where the hell were you dad during the time of his ups and downs with coming off the juice.

I know I may sound like an activist for pro-choice for roids...and I am NOT.   I want to point out that there are some views that are being over looked in this attack on steriod use.  The issue is much wider than is being discussed.

OK...War and Peace is now over. (spelling B champs..have fun)
