Apathetic fans are a worse sign than angry fans, and I sensed a lot of apathy in Neyland today. Not a good sign.

College Football Hot Seat Rankings: How long is Barry Odom's leash at Missouri?

QuoteButch Jones is starting to feel that heat, too, even though the Volunteers were victorious on Saturday against Massachusetts. It's how his team looked in that win, combined with how the Vols have played all season, that explains how Jones' time in Knoxville might be winding down.

But is Jones' seat the hottest in the country?

7. Barry Odom, Missouri
Barry Odom fired his defensive coordinator, DeMontie Cross, but that move hasn't made a difference.

Odom was Mizzou's defensive coordinator in 2015, the final season of the massively successful Gary Pinkel era. Under Odom's guidance, though, the Tigers have been downright offensive.

4. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M
Sumlin's seat is about as hot as it can be for a coach whose team is 3-1, but that's still far cooler than had Texas A&M not pulled out a 50-43 overtime win over Arkansas

3. Butch Jones, Tennessee
Tennessee has won 25 of its past 35 games after an 8-12 start to the Butch Jones era, so why is he on this list? Because most of those losses have seemed to come as all signs pointed to the Volunteers getting over the hump and returning to the elite level

Butch Jones on the hot seat in Tennessee? Houston Nutt says 'it's just a fact'

Quote"He is, it's just a fact," Nutt said, according to SEC Country's Blake Morgan. "You're in a great place with great facilities. I used to tell all my coaches, 'We're always on the hot seat.'

"Unless you're Nick Saban, you're on the hot seat. That's just the way it is. Accept it, embrace it.  That's why you get paid big money."

Nutt, the former Arkansas and Ole Miss coach who now works as a CBS Sports Network analyst, was the featured speaker at the Knoxville Quarterback Club on Monday.

Football limbo, gumbo-style: An unwinnable situation for LSU, Orgeron and Alleva

LSU is in a bind with a coach too expensive to buy out and an AD who can't be trusted to replace him

QuoteFive games into a five-year contract, critics are suggesting the school write a $12 million buyout check to Ed Orgeron after the Tigers lost to Troy.

Five days after last week's disturbing FBI investigation upped the ante on the out-of-control nature of college athletics, Tiger Nation was going all-in.

Orgeron's departure would also be absolutely welcome in large swatches of this state. LSU is used to being better. This week, its coach might have Butch Jones as his biggest ally. The Tennessee coach with his own set of problems is at least diverting attention in the gossipy SEC.

They can't fire Orgeron, of course. Not now because of the upheaval, the ego, the optics, the cash commitment it would take.

You know, all the reasons LSU is in this rut in the first place. The man responsible for it all refused an interview request from CBS Sports.

Athletic director Joe Alleva usually does that when times get tough ...

Butch Jones says 'We'll be fine,' focused on team, not hot seat

QuoteTennessee's bye week presented coach Butch Jones with the opportunity to close off access and avoid difficult questions, but that didn't happen on Tuesday.

Jones, who many believe to be on the proverbial hot seat after a 41-0 loss to Georgia dropped his team to 3-2 this season, met with the media after putting his team through a full equipment practice.

"All our focus is on South Carolina, all of our focus is on this work week," Jones said, asked about potential distractions as the Vols use the bye week to begin preparing for their next game on Oct. 14 against the Gamecocks in Neyland Stadium. "It doesn't affect me or the staff at all.

"We live in a week to week society, and you build relationships with these young men and their families, they've been here a lot on campus, they know what we're about as coaches, they know what we are about as people and they know our players," Jones said of the Tennessee's 2018 recruiting class, which ranks as the best in the SEC.

"They know our program and they know where we're headed and what we've been able to do."

College Football Hot Seat Rankings: Bret Bielema's buyout the only thing keeping him safe

1. Larry Fedora, North Carolina

2017 record: 1-5, 0-3 ACC

QuoteFor this reason — and this reason only — Tennessee's Butch Jones gets a one-week reprieve from being projected as the next guy to get the ax.

Another name you won't see on here is Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin, despite his presence on the list every week to this point. The Aggies lost Saturday, snapping a four-game winning streak, but falling 27-19 at home against No. 1 Alabama is quite an impressive performance and Sumlin appears to have his team moving in the right direction.

Coaches on this list are ranked in order of their likelihood not just to get the boot during the season, but to be sent packing first, and it's heavily influenced by recent results. Jones isn't on there this time but he's sure to be back in a week if Tennessee struggles next Saturday against South Carolina.

3. Bret Bielema, Arkansas

Busy bye week takes Tennessee's Butch Jones from 'hot seat' to 'embattled'

QuoteButch Jones has gone from the proverbial "hot seat" to "embattled" status with a pending quarterback change and the suspension of Darrell Taylor in the same week.

Jones is fighting for his job coaching the Vols (3-2, 0-2 SEC) with South Carolina (4-2, 2-2) headed to Neyland Stadium for a noon kick on Saturday (ESPN).

The Vols are looking to start the season 4-2 for what would be only the second time in the last 10 years. That's the crazy part — a win gives Tennessee its second-best start to a season since 2007.

But the winds are howling on Rocky Top, and a loss would drop the Vols to 0-3 in SEC games this season with Alabama on deck. An 0-4 start in the league would be the Vols' first such record since Jones' second season, which ended at 7-6 with the first of three straight bowl wins.

Pat Forde ranks SEC's 6 hottest seats, presumes another coach to be gone soon

Quote(For what it's worth, he already considers Ole Miss interim coach Matt Luke to be on his way out.)

1. Tennessee's Butch Jones
2. Arkansas' Bret Bielema
3. Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin
4. Missouri's Barry Odom
5. LSU's Ed Orgeron
6. Florida's Jim McElwain

Hottest seat: Butch Jones (14), Tennessee. The Volunteers had a bye week after their worst home loss in a century, and while there was no in-season firing forthcoming, the downtime only allowed the toxicity to fester. Predictably, a bogus rumor was started late in the week about Jones being on the verge of a dismissal. That didn't happen, but it's clear that there are plenty of fans who would like it to be so. Jones is 14-20 in SEC games, and in Year 5, that's not getting it done. Tennessee is 3-2 and, aside from a trip to Alabama on Oct. 21, the rest of the schedule is not daunting. But only a very strong finish would seem likely to save Jones at this point.

Tennessee coach Butch Jones on 'gut-wrenching' reality of South Carolina loss

QuoteKNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Butch Jones lives in a different reality than many of the Tennessee football fans today.

Some are speculating on Jones' future with the Vols, noting what would be an $8,423,610 buyout paid through 2020 if Jones were fired today.

Vols (3-3, 0-3 SEC) play the No. 1-ranked Crimson Tide (7-0, 4-0) at 3:30 next Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa (TV: CBS).

Jones put the wrap on Saturday's 15-9 loss to South Carolina by crediting his players for their efforts against the Gamecocks and assessing QB Jarrett Guarantano.

Guarantano, a redshirt freshman from New Jersey, was 11-of-18 passing for 133 yards in his first career start. Guarantano drove the Vols to the South Carolina 2-yard line in the final minute but was unable to get Tennessee into the end zone for a  game-winning touchdown.

"I thought he was very poised, very calm," Jones said. "He made some plays with his legs.

"But in terms of showing poise and making your first start, I think there are a lot of things positively to build upon."

Guarantano was sacked seven times...

Associated Press: Butch Jones, four other SEC coaches on hot seat

QuoteAlong with Jones, Arkansas' Bret Bielema, Missouri's Barry Odom, Florida's Jim McElwain and Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin also got a mention.

Bielema's reported buyout of $12 million might be too high for Arkansas to pull the trigger on forcing him out. Odom is only in year two of his deal with Missouri, but the Tigers have appeared to give up on their head coach. McElwain still has a chance to save his job for another year, but games against Georgia and Florida State will be critical.

Sumlin is in another boat entirely.

College football hot seat rankings: It's only a matter of time in Knoxville at this point

QuoteIt should be no surprise that Tennessee's Butch Jones remains No. 1 on our College Football Hot Seat Rankings, though losing 45-7 at top-ranked Alabama on Saturday wasn't that surprising. So had the Volunteers shown any sort of fight, their coach might have slipped down the list. But that didn't happen.

Column: It's time for #Vols to part ways with Butch Jones: http://bit.ly/2xvQOJp

QuoteLEXINGTON, Ky. — Tennessee doesn't have to fire head football coach Butch Jones right now.

Tennessee doesn't have to be a top-shelf football program, either.

Both situations require a choice. But one is most certainly going to have a direct impact on the other.

You can't have it both ways. You either keep Jones as your football coach, or you have a top-shelf football program.

One or the other.

Your move, Tennessee.

This is the exact situation John Currie didn't want to be in at the moment, and that's understandable. This is Currie's first season as Tennessee's athletic director. No first-year athletic director wants to fire a head football coach. But Jones has forced his boss' hand.

Parting ways with Jones would be expensive, and it would come with its own risks. Everyone wants to talk about firing a coach, but that's only half of the issue. You have to hire the next coach, and you have to get it right.

But Tennessee needs to do this. Whether it happens this week, next week or next month, it needs to happen.

Saturday was just the second time in 33 years that Tennessee lost to Kentucky, but that doesn't begin to tell the full scope of this Big Orange Big Problem.

Consider this: Despite Kentucky being favored to beat Tennessee — a program it had beaten once in the past 32 years, a program it hates, a program it dreams of beating — there were a lot of empty seats at Kroger Field. And when Kentucky beat one of its biggest rivals for the second time in 33 years, none of its fans rushed the field.

Assessing SEC coach job security, possible replacement candidates

QuoteFlorida and Ole Miss are already looking for new coaches but they certainly won't be the only SEC schools to do so.

Auburn: Could make a move
Gus Malzahn is safe for now though there are still a lot of moving pieces within the Auburn administration. An expected change at the AD position should buy Malzahn another year...

Arkansas: Could make a move
Bret Bielema avoided further embarrassment after Arkansas climbed back to beat Ole Miss but it's still not looking great for the big fella.

LSU: Not making a move
Ed Orgeron didn't exactly get off to a hot start but he's somewhat righted the ship headed into an important showdown with Alabama this weekend. Orgeron looks safe for at least another year –

Tennessee: Should make a move

For some reason it isn't official yet but in all likelihood Butch Jones will be done as Tennessee's coach no later than the end of November. Multiple reports indicated Tennessee really didn't want to make a move this year but Jones' ineptitude has forced the administrators to make a move. Tennessee's play has been pitiful of late and a change at the top is clearly needed.

Hot seat, schmot schmeat: Gus Malzahn secures future by recapturing his past

QuoteSaturday, Malzahn showed his critics he'd actually only confirmed it once and for the next four weeks. His Tigers whipped the dog crap out of No. 1 Georgia — to use Malzahn's own words —

In short: he ain't getting fired. It won't be seriously discussed. And yet, only a month ago, many Auburn fans had already written Malzahn off and were ready to start naming their favorite replacement. Should one win make that much difference?

Yes.
Curated SEC Infotainment and aggregated college sports updates where it just means more on Hogville.net

jbcarol

Scarblog: It always sounded crazy on the surface, that Gus Malzahn could lose his job for losing games to the nation's top two teams, but nobody does crazy like Auburn.

QuoteAbove and below the surface, in feisty chat rooms where fans vent and smoky back rooms where career decisions are made, the discontent was real. A fourth straight sweep at Amen Corner looked like it could be the broom for Malzahn.

Then came No. 10 Auburn 40, No. 1 Georgia 17.

Forget the broom.

I'm not saying extend his contract or give him a raise or forget all the times he came up short. I'm saying give the man his due. In a win-or-go-home kind of year, short of a catastrophic event next week against Louisiana Monroe, Auburn will carry all its goals into the final regular-season game.

Saturday, in a win-or-go-home kind of game, Malzahn went for the throat and taught Kirby Smart a lesson.

Malzahn tried a few tricks, but for the most part, he realized tricks are for kids, and the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry is a man's game. Georgia wasn't man enough this time. Auburn was. That mismatch in the trenches put a stop to Georgia's three-game win streak in this series.

On the subject of manhood, it needs to be said right here. No man in the league has been more valuable this season than Auburn's Kerryon Johnson. A unique combination of thoroughbred and workhorse, the SEC player of the year in waiting rushed for 167 yards, or 119 yards more than Georgia studs Nick Chubb and Sony Michel combined.

It helped that, as has become the norm, Auburn's Jarrett Stidham was the most efficient and effective quarterback on the field.

Christian Kirk did it all for the Aggies, and then afterward went to bat for his coach: http://www.houstonchronicle.com/sports/aggies/article/Nick-Starkel-s-4-touchdown-passes-lead-A-M-past-12350805.php ... @HoustonChron

QuoteCOLLEGE STATION - Christian Kirk did it all in Texas A&M's 55-14 victory over New Mexico on Saturday night, and then added an extra point in a personal overtime long after the game's final whistle.

"I'll personally say that there's not another college football coach that I'd rather play for in the entire country," said Kirk of Kevin Sumlin, in stepping up for the embattled coach who's expected to be dismissed at the end of the regular season.

Kirk added, "When it comes to all of the speculation and what not, you have to block it out."

Rabalais: How hot is it for SEC coaches this season? We take the league's temperature

Quote"I do understand this: Having a head job, a coaching position like this, in the SEC, is very valuable," Orgeron said recently. "You get paid to win. If you don't win, they'll get somebody else to do it. That's just the way it is. You understand this taking the job.

"I don't like to see anybody get fired. But I know it's part of the business."

It's an increasingly crazy business. Try this scenario on for size:

If Sumlin and Bielema get fired, Mississippi State's Dan Mullen moves on to another job and Auburn's Gus Malzahn decides he's fed up with the pressure he's under, Orgeron could be the second-most tenured coach in the SEC West behind Saban after less than two full seasons on the job.

With Jones being ousted at Tennessee, it seemed like a good time to rate how hot SEC coaches' seats are at this point in the season:

Arkansas

Bret Bielema: 4-6 this season, 29-32 in five seasons

How hot is it in Fayetteville? Bielema looked like a boiled lobster in Tiger Stadium

Missouri

Barry Odom: 5-5 this season, 9-13 in two seasons

How hot is it in Columbia West? Odom was in trouble after a 1-5 start but could finish 7-5 with Vandy and Arkansas remaining.
