I know a lot of hog fans are too young to remember Lance Alworth but he was one of the greatest football players ever - from anywhere, not just Arkansas. At Arkansas he ran the ball, caught the ball, threw the ball, kicked the ball and returned kicks. He was a one man tornado on the field.

In professional football, he created the modern wide receiver position with his speed and leaping ability - hence his nickname Bambi. Here is a video of him in professional football:

Yes, he was/is the best.    Next question.

Can you imagine MJ in a spread offence?
Would not want to play that team.

The Question is who is the greatest RAZORBACK football player , not what razorback was the greatest football player.

DMAC not even close.

greatest football player that was a hog.... Lance Alworth, Jason Peters, Dan Hampton, or Steve Atwater must be considered.

I think Matt Jones is close, if your criteria is the basis of judgement.  MJ, like DMac, could break on any given play.

Tom Reed was an outstanding player, but even he could not overcome the cheating officiating.

You old timers will remember the '71 Liberty Bowl when we were hosed by the officials, well, one official by the name of Preston Watts.

Tennessee and the Hogs were both ranked in the top 20, with TN in the top 10. Two plays at the end of the game cheated the Hogs out of victory.  First, Bill McClard kicked a field goal putting us up 16-7. But wait, Preston Watts threw a flag and called holding on our tight end Bobby Nichols. The replay clearly showed the Vol defender grabbed Nichols and threw him to the ground.

Then with 2:00 left, there was a fumble that the above mentioned Tom Reed clearly recovered. When Reed handed the ball to Preston Watts, Watts signaled first down for TENNESSEE at our 30 something yard line. They scored and won by one point.

If there has ever appeared to be an official on the take, it was Preston Watts that night.

In 1999, The Sporting News published its list of the 100 Greatest football players of all time.  Lance Alworth was number 31 on the list.  So there's that.

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

Last day to get your opinion counted is Friday. Get your votes in!

Wahls

If Matt Jones doesn't get his shoulder injury that robbed his ability to throw the football later in his career, he's the greatest ever. And it wouldn't be close.

But it happened, so I'll take McFadden #1.

You have two kinds of tough guys... those that do it from behind a keyboard, and those that juggle soap in prison just to show they're a fearless bastard.

Jerry Eckwood would've been up there with any luck. He was a special talent. He turned down USC which was the original Tailback U.

Gary Adams.  Held the interception record for around 20 years.  And he played at my home town!!  ;D

Did you know that former Razorback receiver Jim Benton, was selected for the NFL 1940s All-Decade Team? Benton was the first NFL receiver to gain more than 300 yards in a game, a record that stood for 40 years.

Just a tidbit ... have until Friday to get your votes counted ...

Really sad to read about the mental problems that he got from football.

Two time runner up that should have been the 2nd two time winner.

I moved to Arkansas in 1988 and he's the best I've seen here.

I see some mentioning Matt Jones.  While he made some spectacular plays, he had way too many turnovers (fumbles and INTs) to be in the conversation imo.  You can't be great one play and crap the bed the next so often and be mentioned as greatest ever.

I don't really think there is a greatest ever.  There are just too many Hogs that an argument can be made for so there isn't anyone that's clear cut.  Some played defense and others offense.  Some positions have more statistics or sexier stats than others.  It's apples and oranges in a lot of ways.
