They could sell more drugs and pay as much as they want.

or better yet, armed robbery, it's a very profitable felony the ol' high risk/high reward job

huntindoc

Just spitballing here, but is it possible JFB is talking to Cal to apply pressure to another candidate that he really wants?

I think the recruiting rumors are just that...after Camby which was not at all related to him, every player he recruits gets scrutinized more closely. While I agree we could do without that kind of attention I'm not ready to convict the man when the NCAA hasn't.

Very interesting development.

To be honest, I can't think of any other reason for Calipari to choose Arkansas over Memphis. Their basketball tradition is almost as strong as ours. They are definitely a "basketball first" school. Their attendance was almost exactly the same as ours this year. Yes, they must compete with the Grizzlies. Yes, we are in the SEC. Yes, BWA is a better venue. But I don't see any of those things making a big enough difference to come here. Now, if he could greatly increase his salary, that might do the trick.

Little known fact, but prior to settling on Guantanamo, the Pentagon wanted to house terror suspects at War Memorial Stadium.  It was deemed to be cruel and unusual punishment and in violation of the Geneva Convention.

"Calipari, notorious for his vitriolic attacks on players ..."

"...that trip to the Final Four was stripped by the NCAA after an investigation."

"Our only problem with Calipari is his somewhat scandalous record. He left U-Mass with NCAA investigations and has been in rumors for illegal recruiting tools."
Thanks HKS.  I read both of those articles.  I think that Calipari would do a very good job if he came here, but I would be worried that when he left in 10 or so years he might leave our program in shambles due to NCAA investigations.

Tiger High can't even afford to build its own arena or football stadium, so in terms of overall cash flow, not a chance.

However, I'm sure they can tell the local boosters to double the number of cars stolen and crack rocks sold to ante up more to keep Cal, though.

he is an idiot to leave memphis for UA. I bet he is using us for a nice raise.  Im sure we will see and be played AGAIN.

I really don't care for the coach either.  Never was a fan of him back when he was at UMass, but I guess he wins everywhere he has been.

Someone here posted 1.8 million, but I am not sure how true that is.

I seriously doubt this number, doesn't pass the smell test...  Would that not put him ahead of all Big-12 coaches and most, if not all SEC coaches?

Another factor to consider, Memphis vs. NWA?

sure puts him ahead of Hooten.

never signed
ok, gotcha.
HMMMmmm.. Sounds like Cal was not overly joyed by the new deal and he thought, he better wait.  Why don't I go to the Final Four, find somebody to offer me more money and hold Memphis's feet to the fire to pay me more.

Cal may have found his sucker...

Why would he want to come to Arkansas? He never thought to highly of Arkansas Basketball. Maybe he's had a change of heart.

I just found the answer to my question. According to the Press &  Sun-Bulletin, Calipari is paid $1,315,000, with a possible "tournament bonus" of $400,000 (I assume that is the max bonus for winning it all).

Weren't some Memphis players found to have had fur coats and jewels in their apartment a couple of years ago? Was Calipari involved in the Marcus Camby payment scandal? I'm only asking.

Why yes, yes he was.

Thus, the vacating of the Final Four appearance from the NCAA Record.

$2.2 million and a shot to dominate the SEC West and play with the big boys...UK and Florida....maybe.

He may have had some problems at U Mass (and what a great team they had in '96), but he would bring excitement back to BWA.

Just accept Eddie's apology from last Fall (Step 10 in the 12 Step Program) as blanket apology for all past coaches and let it go.

Is this something we can take a chance on?  UA is already being labeled a habitual offender by the NCAA because of Track violations and the Ted Herrod incident.  Just seems like something to stay away from IMO.

Just ask Pat Riley.  Mr. Threepeat knows.  (3-peat is a Reg. TM of Pat Riley)

No offense to our many great posters and hog fans from the Memphis area.

If Coach Calipari has gone that long at the former Memphis State without a transgression (and he has folks who would not hesitate to ring him up) then maybe ... (he knows something is going down and he has to get outta thar).

Pre-emptive "turn down" to stroke the ego or better escalate that contract extension.  He did not get an offer from Kentucky.

BTW, the links to the stories on the contract extension are as light on details as any I've seen.
