It is like a steak in the display at a fancy restaurant.  It looks really good but it is hard to say for sure until it is even cooked.

Yes I remember this!  One of my all time favorite hogs.  In my opinion, the best ever "on ball" defender to ever wear a hog jersey.  He and Walker throwing that d on guards was a thing of beauty!

SIDENOTE ALVIN ROBERTSON STORY-  I was in Highschool and made a trip up to the hill for a weekend circa 82.  Ended up at an apt late night on Sat with just a handful of people hanging out drinking, whatnot. The hogs basketball team had a road game at Rice or Baylor or somewhere, minus two players, Robertson and as I recall, Robert Kitchen?  They were suspended for something, and were there hanging with us.  Being from small town Ark and a HUGE hog fan, I was in awe as Alvin and I drank beer together and played three card monte!

After about an hour of this, he'd won my entire wallet!  I worked hard on the farm 6 days a week in the summers so I always had cash, and there was a little over a $100 in it.  That was ALOT of money back then.  He won it all, including the wallet, and I didn't care because I was hanging out with Alvin freakin Robertson!

When it came time to call it a night, he stuffed the wallet, with ALL the cash in it, into my coat pocket! I tried to give it back to him, he wouldn't take it.  We hugged it out, said goodbye......

Well I know it worked at Nebraska.  At one time they had had 354 players selected in the NFL and 7% of those were walkons.  Some of you have watched the movie about the Eagles to many times because to walk on you had to have a  recommendation from your high school coach (so much for the chess club reference) and most were from smaller Nebraska high schools or late bloomers from bigger schools.  I M Hipp was probably the most famous because of his position (RB)  and his name but others went on to be in the pro bowl.  My gosh you have so many coaches that it is unbelievable to me that some of you think you cannot find some time to get 1 or 2 players who can contribute.  In the early 80s Nebraska had multiple walkons drafted for a few years.

Congrats, and I agree. Screw Oaklawn.

they lose out on the big bettors on their platform because they won't adapt and become competitive in rewards. and its like they don't care that they are losing out on that business. baffling really.

Where Would you put a turf course ? It would take a total renovation ..

actually, that isn't totally true. Young cella is very receptive to it.  heard they have drawings for one but they are never going to admit it and it wouldn't be a traditional oval. think of crossing over the main track.

Oaklawn has a very mediocre jockey colony. Richard Santana is a good young jockey, the 2 David C's are serviceable. Ramon Vazquez is pretty good then the older guys John Court is riding good, Gary Stevens wins if he has the best horse but he's not splitting horses or going thru a crack on the rail. I think the most underrated jockey at Oaklawn is Rodney Prescott the guy can ride. Beyond those your gonna need a stroke of luck. The Fairgrounds purses are much less than Oaklawn and their Jockey colony is much better like they have 6-8 jockeys better than anybody at Oaklawn. Geroux, Bravo, Pedroza, Lanarie, Mena, Beschizza, Alvarado and more.

Grass course. warm weather. one of the Fair grounds jocks was coming but decided not to because he couldnt play golf as much in this cold weather.

I think the colony here is pretty average at best considering the purses... one thing you do notice... the young quality riders are standing out... David Cabrera for sure is one. this kid can absolutely ride. you don't come out of the the oklahoma/ lone star circuit and dominate like he has early in the meet. that tells me two things:  the other guys aren't very good and cabrera is standing out despite the oaklawn backside politics and agent/trainer/rider loyalties. also, Gary Stevens is still a great rider. yes, he only gets on good horses, but do you blame him?  dude has legged up on winning colors, beholder, mucho macho man, etc. He isn't going to ride an Arky bred claimer for Lynn Chleborad. lol

Santana is a great rider. he validated it further at Saratoga this summer.

i honestly think Hot springs is home to one of the very best young riders on the planet... but he spends most of his time these days in sunny southern california. he will be back here today.

I believe that new hitting coach has made difference.  I know, Bucky pitchers blow... or do they?  haha.. make no mistake, we have some talent on this team, and we have some power.   It seemed like we were really seeing the zone.  I heard one of the announcers say that their pitchers were afraid to throw it in the zone because they were afraid of what we would do .  And, that is exactly what it seemed like.    very good start so far.  obviously we need to see how we do against other teams.. but i'm confident this team is going to be damn good and worthy of their ranking.
