Former Rupp Runt and now Hall of Famer Louie Dampier made a lasting impression as a shooter. Former UCLA player Lynn Shackelford recalled being on the Miami Floridians and watching Dampier shoot in ABA games.

Shackelford did the same as a color analyst on Los Angeles Lakers broadcasts as Dampier finished his playing career with San Antonio.

"If you left him open from three-point range, it was automatic," Shackelford said. "That's the way it seemed to me. He was an amazing shooter."

Dampier was inducted in the Naismith Hall of Fame this year.

On Monday, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame will announce the nominees for the class of 2016.

The Hall of Fame finally made changes in how it goes about picking nominees. The time required to no longer be an active player was reduced from five to four years.

The Hall also disbanded a committee set up to review players, coaches and officials from the American Basketball Association. That means Rupp's Runt Louie Dampier, a member of the class of 2015, will be the final player enshrined through the ABA committee.

In a statement, Jerry Colangelo explained.

"Over the past five years, the ABA Committee has fulfilled our promise by honoring legends such as Artis Gilmore, Mel Daniels, Roger Brown, Bobby 'Slick' Leonard and Louie Dampier," said Colangelo, chairman of the Basketball Hall of Fame.

Former ABA players remain eligible for consideration through other committees.

Weighty matter

Dan Issel, the career scoring leader for UK's men's basketball program, put this in perspective.

Issel acknowledged that adding weight will help UK freshman Skal Labissiere deal with physical play. But, Issel added, more pounds is not a magic cure.

For instance, the Denver Nuggets drafted LSU guard Chris Jackson (Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf) with the third pick of the 1990 NBA Draft. The Nuggets immediately decided he needed to gain weight to withstand physical play in the NBA.

"He came in here like a fat, little pig his rookie year," Issel said, "and he was awful. He was terrible."

In Jackson's second season, Issel became the Nuggets' coach.

"We got a bunch of that weight off," Issel said, "and he was a much better player."

So, Issel said, a slender player like Labissiere should be careful about putting on weight.

"Sure, 20 more pounds and more muscle would certainly help the young man," Issel said. "But you don't have to be a bodybuilder to play basketball."

A&M senior guard Alex Caruso speaks of collecting steals as many players speak of scoring points.

"I'm not going to go out looking for the steal," Caruso said of the No. 20 Aggies hosting Arkansas at 3:30 p.m. Saturday in the teams' Southeastern Conference opener. "But I'm going to play my game, and eventually it's going to end up in my hands."

The ball has done just that on 228 occasions over Caruso's four seasons with the Aggies, and with one more steal he'll snap the school record held by guard David Edwards from 1991-94.

"It's just me playing hard and having fun," Caruso, 6-5, said of two of the prime ingredients of his theft success. "Coach (Billy) Kennedy has probably cringed at a couple I've gotten, and then a bunch that I've missed. But being able to play at A&M and have my name in some type of record book is cool to leave (behind)."

He'll now receive an opportunity in his first season coaching at Florida to see The Pavilion, the Rebels' new $96.5 million arena, in its third game. The Rebels (12-4, 2-2 SEC) play host to the Gators (10-6, 2-2 SEC) at 7 p.m. Saturday (ESPN2).

"Some big wins at home in front of a crowd back under Coach (Rob) Evans and Coach Barnes in front of a crowd that was experiencing sustained success really for the first time in school history in a facility that wasn't attracting them because of how it looked or how it was built. But they generated excitement."
