lthough Chubb spotted college football five weeks as Todd Gurley's backup, the rookie still finished in the top 20 nationally in total rushing yards (1,547).

TE: Hunter Henry, Arkansas
Henry is a rarity in today's game in that he's a tight end who plays with his hand in the dirt and can actually block. Even though he's stuck in an offense that doesn't throw the ball much, Henry has found a way to lead all SEC tight ends in receptions over the past two seasons.

Late in the first quarter of Alabama's win over Georgia, freshman nose tackle Daron Payne got caught on one knee and looking over to the sideline when the ball was snapped...

Lambert quickly got back down under center and snapped the ball, catching all three of Alabama's defensive linemen off-guard and still looking at the sideline, including Payne.

No problem.

Lined up in front of Bulldogs center Brandon Kublanow, Payne alertly popped up once the ball was snapped, blowing past Kublanow and tackling running back Sony Michel for no gain on a run to the left.

Johnson, 21, was arrested on charges of murder after police say he hacked a random jogger to death along the White Rock Creek Trail in Dallas, according to multiple media outlets in Dallas-Fort Worth.

In nearly 20 years of covering the Aggies for a handful of newspapers, Johnson's tale is perhaps the strangest I've come across regarding A&M. He had three key catches in the Aggies' 29-24 toppling of top-ranked Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala., on Nov. 10, 2012, and two days later simply went missing in College Station – one hour before A&M's practice that Monday.

Two days later, his mother pleaded in her front yard to television cameras for the safe return of her son. A&M also listed Johnson as "missing" on the home page of its athletics website, in hopes of locating the receiver.

Police found him on a street near his old high school of Dallas Skyline about 3 a.m. that Thursday, and he never publicly gave a reason why he left A&M –

In the spring of 2014 I stopped by Johnson's home in a Dallas neighborhood, and visited with his mother. I'd tried reaching her by phone to no avail, and so I decided to visit the old-fashioned way. Linda Hanks was working in the front yard, and couldn't have been nicer during our visit.

She said Johnson would not be interested in talking with me, but that he was working out and "he shall return" to college football – albeit not at A&M. She said rumors of Johnson suffering from mental illness were just that – rumors.

Meanwhile some men who lived in the neighborhood had started gathering a little bit down the street on the weekday afternoon, and looking our way as we talked on the sidewalk.

"You need to go, for your safety," an anxious Hanks told me. "They think you're police."

I took her advice.

More and more teams have ditched Saban's preferred smash-mouth style of football in favor of a hurry-up, no huddle (HUNH) offense.

It's left Saban in the awkward position of trying to keep elements of a defense that was so dominating while adjusting and evolving to keep up with the trends.

"There is no doubt in my mind they are pulled between two worlds," said Phil Savage, former Cleveland Browns general manager and Senior Bowl executive director. "One where their philosophy is, which is rooted in the 3-4, and the other where football is really going, which is basketball on grass."

Take a look at Alabama's five SEC losses over the last five years: LSU in 2011, Texas A&M in 2012, Auburn in 2013 and Ole Miss in 2014 and 2015... There are only a few SEC teams now – Arkansas, Georgia and LSU – that allow Alabama to primarily utilize its 3-4 base defense.

It's unlikely there will be another Terrence Cody at Alabama.

There's still a need for an oversized run-stopper, just not 10 of them. It'd be too much of a liability against teams like Ole Miss and Texas A&M.

It's made Saban change his mentality of recruiting specialty players for specific situational defenses. That's the way the classically-trained defensive master was taught in the NFL, but no-huddle uptempo offenses limit defensive substitutions. That can be a major issue if a situational defense can't get off the field.

Instead, Alabama needs quicker, versatile defenders who can play against any style of offense.

"Big enough to play how we want to play and athletic enough to play across the board," Smart said. "Some guys are athletic enough to play against some teams, but we have to recruit of our 42 or 43 spots who are able to play both styles. That's hard to do. You can't make mistakes. You have to get guys who can play in both systems."

The challenge is everyone wants that player...
