Since it is basically game week I want to ask about the game. How do you think La. Tech will play defensively and why? Will Enos counter this early on with a short to intermediate passing attack or will he try to protect his young QB?

Me?
I think that they will load up to stop the run and put the game on the shoulders of our new QB. I expect to see 8 in the box from the first play.I expect to see them run blitz to try and fill gaps. I expect them to stunt and play games with our O'Line.
It is will be very hard to generate any running lanes when there are more defenders than blockers. I think that Holtz knows that he cannot play our run game straight-up and have a very good shot at winning.

I think that we should be able to play action from play 1, but I'm not totally sure that AA will have the time to use the deep ball a whole lot. The short game and the TE's will be really important. Morgan and Sprinkle need to be able to find the spots vacated by the linebackers and safeties. If we can hurt them with the short game and maybe hit some big YAC plays they will have to back off the LOS and then the run game opens.

We could call time out and riverdance on the 50 yard line after breaking the first huddle...I won't mind...as long as we win baby :)

But I think you're right.  It would make sense to test the first time starting QB.

Wildhog

I hope to see quite a bit of Ty Storey.

With a healthy AA on the sideline, obviously. :)

hopefully we build up a big enough lead to be able to get Ty some reps. sure we want austin to get plenty of game experience, at the same time we can't afford him to get hurt. if the game is in bag, i say give other players some experience.
We all got a chicken duck woman thing waiting for us.

La Tech message boarders are pretty confident. Feel like our secondary won't be able to cover their receivers and their passing game won't miss a beat with a new QB while ours will suffer. Nobody predicting outright victory but they generally think it'll be within 10 points.

Guv, do we score thru the air or does the ground game work? Do you think La. Tech will lay it all out there to stop the run first?

I suspect it'll go four quarters and the Hogs win.

I think we come out passing and get them on their heels a bit, then cram it down their throat with the run game.

First target goes to hatcher.  I don't think we use a lot of sprinkle because we don't have to.

I am optimistic until I have reason to believe otherwise.  Bielema calls off the Hogs in the fourth quarter and runs out the clock.

TheRazorback500

Win the toss, defer, allow Tech a couple of first downs but stop them and force a punt. Rollout pass to Sprinkle for 15, curl to Morgan who makes a man miss for 25, then RW111 straight up the middle for the TD. Collins intercepts after a vicious Ramirez hit and we drive for another TD. Rinse, lather, repeat. HOGS 45-17.

LA Tech lost it's entire offense to the draft. They're not going to find their new identity against this year's D. I'll give them a garbage TD in the 4th quarter.

We set up the run with the pass. We rush for 250 yards and pass for 315. Two RB's (one named Whaley) score TD's. Three receivers score, but Sprinkle get's the first one through the air on 3rd and goal. No one gets 100 yards (aside from AA), as the passes and carries are divided between the best receiving corps in the country and an emerging backfield powerhouse.

Sounds like some of the lunacy that goes on around here. Guess its just a side effect of the internet.

I suspect its a semi-close (10-20 point) game at half, with our depth just pulling away during the 2nd. We are breaking in some new personell. Just dont want coach to leave any starters in too long and see anyone get hurt. We are thin at certain positions.

LA Tech head coach Skip Holtz knows that Austin Allen has very little game experience so I expect him to load the box to stop the run and try to force the Hogs to win passing the ball.

Lefty, I think that is exactly what they will do. I think Holtz knows that they cannot play our run game straight-up and he also knows that we have a first time starter at QB.

Regardless of his cool demeanor AA will have some pretty big butterflies that first few plays. I'm inclined to believe that our first play will be a fullback lead behind Froholdt, Ragnow and Raulerson with Johnson trying to take out a linebacker. That could set the tone for us, hit LaT right in the mouth and give AA that first play to settle the jitters.
I do think that we will wind up using the passing game to back them off the LOS enough for the run game to really take hold.
Being able to do both well makes us really tough to defend.

Sorta, my guess is that he misses maybe the 1st quarter unless his replacement is doing ok.

Hopefully well. I don't want another ULM.

One of my classmates and his wife are attending the game. They are staying with us the night before the game as a midway point from Ruston. They are both LaTech grads. For my sake, we better win!

With that said, I think we are about to see a show with Whaley and Williams.

a0ashle

Here's the thing, Holtz may load the box to stop the run, but even with their 8 they won't be able to slow it down, aaaand they will be putting their pass defense at risk. I think they might try to a lot of movement on the line, but not selling out one aspect for another. They want cause confusion on the line and hope it pays off in turnovers.

The NewEra

Like everyone else I'm just guessing here, but I suspect the coaches have enough confidence in Austin Allen to run our offense just as we would against any other opponent.  Next game up will be TCU and I don't see coach B or Enos holding much back.  This will be a full dress rehearsal for the Frogs in Ft. Worth.

My guess is our O-line will be called on early to road grade with Walker, Williams3 and Whaley punishing some people.  Load the box and AA and our receivers will do their thing.  I'm expecting an efficient, versatile and potent offense.  Defensively I think the LA Tech Q.B. to be on life support early and often.  I wouldn't be surprised to see our secondary with three picks.

What I hope to see very little of on either side of the ball for the Hogs are penalties.  We need to start this season off playing a clean game from the start.

With LA Tech losing what they did on offense, I don't see how they can be confident against our D. Even if the secondary is par, the front 7 should dominate. Our offense could sputter a bit with new a new QB, new RB's (RW3 coming off injury), and new offensive lineman. But I expect them to work out the kinks by the end of the first half. Hogs roll........

Hogs- 43

LA Tech- 10

An offense that returns only 3 or 4 starters going up against a defense that returns 9 starters with some good depth is a bad combination for that offense. That's why I stated my believe the the Hog defensive starters will pretty well STUFF the LA Tech offense.

This kinda brings up a 2nd question:
Do we play a bit vanilla to keep a few things from TCU or do we roll it all out there to get a bit of "game" practice? I understand the idea of keeping it "vanilla", but I have also thought show them so much that they have to spend extra time preparing for such a varied O.

jjdlc

We don't have the luxury of another tune-up game week 2, so I don't expect us to hold much back.  They have the same issue of a new QB that we do, so I would not be surprised to see Smith dial up the pressure early and show what this D line can really do.  If they believe they are going to get 10 yard cushions on their receivers like last year, they are in for a shock.

They may try to stop the run, but I don't think Enos will be hesitant to let AA air it out if that happens, honestly would not be surprised if our first offensive play is a deep ball off play action.

Ultimately, I think they find out our D isn't nearly as soft as last year, and our offense is flexible and potent.

I don't believe Enos will throw everything at LA Tech but I do believe he'll use a lot of his offense to get the team ready for TCU.

La Tech did not lose their entire offense. In fact, they return the meat of an outstanding receiving corps, including two All-CUSA wideouts, and they added some newcomers on the outside that have been impressive in camp.  Their offensive line was patched together last year due to injuries.  Holtz claims the line is in much better shape now with 11 guys that he can play. They have running backs.  Dixon missed several games last season. The question on O is the QB.  If they get decent QB play, they probably won't be easy to stuff.  They do have a lot of holes to fill on defense.  If our offense sputters, this game could be closer than many are expecting.

I think it will be closer than most of our fans think.  They will most definitely load the box to stop the run.  Austin will have his chances, hope he makes them pay.

"Arkansas is a not-great team..."

Why'd you stop?  They picked Tech to lose.

Here is their "preview" of Tech's first three games. Not a lot of intelligent prognostication by that bunch:

Quote9/3 – @ Arkansas (L)

Arkansas is a not-great team, but they're a not-great SEC team.

9/10 – South Carolina State (W)

Using an FCS as a tune-up is still kinda rude, plus you run the risk of embarrassing yourself if you have a bad week. Still, Louisiana Tech is not North Texas, and should handle this one just fine. Mark it W.

9/17 - @ Texas Tech (L)

The Big 12 is not the SEC, but if there were an equivalent program between the two conferences, it'd be Texas Tech and Arkansas. So much potential, but always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Point being, tune in this week to watch the Bulldogs get their ass beat by a bunch of bridesmaids.

Skip may not have much of a choice. Price Wilson seems to have a slight injury, So Higgins and Smith are the main QBs practicing right now.

I have been thinking something like 34-13 Hogs all summer. Looks like little Skip is only going to sit his QB for only a Quarter, but even still. They lost a ton of production from a year ago on both sides of the ball. I see it similar to our game witj ULL in 2013

ErieHog

It'll be closer than we like, and Austin will play at least 3 quarters, if not more.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Skip Holtz wants to win this game more than life itself...He believes his dad was run out of Arkansas by JFB for no reason, and he might be right. But I can hear Lou yelling from his back yard as the Hogs kickoff to Tech to start the game.....
