...just a quick question for you guys while we wait for tonight's games to begin.  Who are your favourite college basketball coaches to ever coach the game?  You know, the guys whom you admire and whom you would have loved to have played for?  Here are mine, in no particular order:

Nolan Richardson
Jerry Tarkanian
Paul Westhead

Most of you younger guys  might not remember Tarkanian or Westhead, but they were great college coaches.  Just FYI.

sowmonella

Nolan yes. Tark was a cheat. Westhead was barely a 500%  (285-223) coach in college. Wooden should be on any list. Denny Crum was also a great coach.

I think he said favorite, not best.

I'll add Brad Stevens to the list.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Nolan & Eddie.
One of my favs when I was younger was Lou Carnesecca. I don't have a good reason why, but simply liked him.
Izzo has been a fav of mine since taking over for Heathcoate.
My fav non-Hog coach was Knight.
I've pulled for Crean for many years for no real good reason.
Lute Olson.

Cheers to that. Everything wrong with Calipari summed up in those few words by Chaney. It sickens me how he's always chatting up the refs arguing for calls. Their players do it too, remember the hugs and butt slaps between Monk and the refs... :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:

Chaney was right. Calipari has proceed to make a mockery of this sport and should be ashamed. How a two time confirmed cheater is inducted into the hall of fame is beyond me.

Lute Olson, Steve Fisher, Rick Majerus, Brad Stevens, Buzz Williams,

Gene Keady and John Cheaney scared me worse than Knight did.... scary dudes. I always have thought the Keady and Coach K, resemble their mascot.

old_school_hawg

Sutton, Knight, Wooden, K, Olson, Newell... Those are my favs all time.

College basketball coaches are so often easy to hate.  Maybe it's because we so often see them acting like spoiled children and forget that, at least during games, that can be part of the job.  Still, I've generally despised most of 'em not on Arkansas's bench.

You didn't ask, but can't stand: Knight, Tark, Cal, Abe, Pearl, Andy Kennedy. Happy for SC but don't like Martin and never have.

If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

Not necessarily my most favorite below, but the below is the best I have seen since I started watching NCAA basketball 35 years ago.  The below are the best total/complete package Coaches I have seen (when you consider recruiting, game preparation, and in-game bench coaching).  No particular order below.

Pat Summitt  (Rest in Peace)
Jim Boeheim
Bobby Knight
Ben Howland
Eddie Sutton

Too young to remember Jimmy V, but the 30 for 30 showed him as a motivator and easy to like. And Nolan of course

I'm only 19, so I can't speak for even Nolan but in the present I like:
Archie Miller
Buzz Williams
And someone that no one mentions but Shaka Smart is probably my favorite coach.

If your list does not contain Wooden and Iba, well you are either daft or old. For me it would be those 2, plus Knight, Crum, Sutton, Carril.

not counting Arkansas coaches:

westhead-loved how his Loyola Marymount teams. I actually coached that style, lots of fun
pitino- the providence & Kentucky version, press & shoot 3's. not the Louisville version
knight-70's-80's Indiana teams. man I miss his motion offense

I have a soft spot for Abe Lemons, not that he is the equal of Nolan, Sutton, Coach K, Knight and others but I remember him calling the hogs with Arkansas fans after U.S. Reed hit the shot against Louisville.

And he was the most quotable coach ever..in any sport..

Abe on why he didn't have many team rules..."it's always your stud who gets caught.."

On Eddie Sutton..."Fast Eddie is ok but I have a dream one day that an Arkansas player
will be driving the lane and all five of my guys fall down...

I never saw Iba coach, so I can't offer an opinion about him.  Nolan, Denny Crum, Al McGuire.  I'm sure there are others. I used to love to watch Abe Lemons and Guy Lewis on the sidelines when we played them.  I thought what Dale Brown did after the last game at Barnhill Arena was very classy.
