Update: Former LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson has been ordered back to prison by a state judge Tuesday [Oct. 30, 2012].

LSU quarterback Jordan Jefferson's second-degree battery case will be heard by a grand jury beginning Wednesday.

QuoteJefferson's attorney, Lewis Unglesby, filed a motion last Friday in state district court in an effort to speed up the legal process. Unglesby requested in the motion that a judge determine whether there's enough probable cause to charge Jefferson, who has missed the Tigers' first three games along with backup linebacker Josh Johns, who was also charged with second-degree battery in connection with the bar fight.

In that motion, Unglesby claims the alleged victims in the fight made racial slurs prior to the fight, according to the attorney for the alleged victims, Michael P. Bienvenu. Those claims are false, Bienvenu said, and are merely an attempt to "character-assassinate the victims in the case."

Bienvenu told The Baton Rouge Advocate that three of his clients, all of whom are white, were with minorities the night of the fight and that none of the witnesses who were interviewed about the incident, including Jefferson and Johns, mentioned racial slurs until Wednesday.

"It was not until last week, when Mr. Jefferson apparently convinced several LSU players to provide statements on his behalf that, quite curiously, this allegation of racial slurs first arose," Bienvenu told The Baton Rouge Advocate.

DNA inconclusive in Jefferson case

Quote"This case will not be determined by DNA alone," Hiller Moore, the DA for East Baton Rouge Parish, said.  "It will depend, like most other cases, on witness testimony and their credibility."

No doubt.  But the state tested those shoes in the hopes of proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that one of the two players was the kicker/stomper in the brawl.  And they could not do it.

"The absence of (Andrew) Lowery's DNA on Jordan's show supports our postition that Jordan will be cleared," said attorney Lance Unglesby.  "He should not have been arrested."

Both players were suspended indefinitely by LSU coach Les Miles after their arrests.  The Tigers have raced out to a 3-0 start with Jarrett Lee filling in as the team's starting quarterback.

IMO his goose is cooked at LSU he will never play another down for the Tigers.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

3 LSU players appeared to testify on Jefferson's behalf. Have not yet.

Josh Johns's attorney claimed that Johns testified earlier. Said he was innocent and that there has been a miscommunication.

Prem Burns of the East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney's office said Jefferson will have his arraignment hearing in three to four weeks at which time his charge will be detailed to him and he will enter a guilty or not guilty plea. If the case proceeds to trial, that could take place before the end of the year, Burns said, unless a special request is made by defense counsel for an earlier trial.
"The case against Mr. Jefferson will be handled just like any other case in the system," Burns said. "There will be no special treatment one way or the other."

Quote"We're very optimistic that these guys will eventually rejoin the team," LSU coach Les Miles said Wednesday night. "But right now, there are still some hurdles that need to be overcome."

Miles said it is unlikely either player will dress out for LSU's game against Kentucky on Saturday in Tiger Stadium.

The LSU Dean of Students office, according to the University's Code of Conduct, could suspend Jefferson and/or Johns on its own and does not weigh what another entity, such as a grand jury, decides, Dean of Students Kathleen White said, speaking in general terms.

"The Dean of Students has its own process," LSU associate athletic director Herb Vincent said.

Miles also said there is an NCAA compliance issue, but he expects neither to delay their return long.

"It's not anything serious," Miles said. "And I feel it could be done in short order."

I'm totally SHOCKED, SHOCKED I say that the charges have been reduced to a misdemeanor. I'm also stunned that he is being permitted to return to play. (sarcasm)

Lance Unglesby entered the plea on his client's behalf at the arraignment. Jefferson was not present for the proceeding. [Apparently the courthouse is on the other side of the 50.]

QuoteJefferson is accused of kicking Andrew Lowery during the fight. Lowery was left unconscious and suffered a fractured jaw, according to his attorney Michael Bienvenu.

"It's not difficult at all because there's a lot of answers for a lot of questions that people don't know," Jefferson said during the interview. "There's a lot toward that situation and plenty of answers I can give you to show that I was not involved in that situation.

"That situation was a whole scam for this guy. He was trying to get money, trying to do whatever he can to sabotage what I had going on."

Four former LSU football players, including 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist Tyrann Mathieu and quarterback Jordan Jefferson, were arrested for possession of marijuana Thursday in Baton Rouge. Also arrested were linebacker Karnell Hatcher and defensive back Derrick Bryant.

QuoteJefferson was scheduled for a discovery hearing on Tuesday for his trial on a charge of simple battery in connection with the Shady's bar fight incident last year, according to Jefferson's attorney Lance Unglesby. A trial date is expected to be set at the hearing, East Baton Rouge Parish District Attorney Hillar Moore said.

Former LSU standout Jordan Jefferson is placed in a police car at Baton Rouge Police Department Second District Precinct bound for East Baton Rouge Parish Prison after he and former LSU football players Tyrann Mathieu, Derrick Bryant and Karnell Hatcher were found by police at Mathieu's apartment with a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high-grade marijuana, Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, in Baton Rouge.

@ClayTravisBGID I'm not surprised that 3 others are going to jail because JJ doesn't know how to open a gate.

Sad to see a kid with the talent of the Honey Badger throw it all away.

The first thing I heard today was that he grew up on a pig farm. That's quite a start in my book. And my last memory was watching him hang 70 on Nebraska. Just those two facts are enough (for me to like him). Then, I hear that he's out of the Hayden Fry-Bill Snyder-Barry Alvarez coaching tree. Oh, that's enough for me to like a lot. Then, I hear he's got a 27-year-old wife. Okay, we can stop. I like him.

Former LSU football standouts Tyrann Mathieu and Jordan Jefferson were released from a Baton Rouge jail Friday after their arrests at Mathieu's apartment on marijuana charges.

QuoteBaton Rouge police said the arrests came Thursday after officers responded to a complaint about a man attempting to force his way through a security gate at the apartment complex where Mathieu lives. Before officers arrived, a resident let the man, later identified as Jefferson, into the complex and he was seen going into an apartment.

Police said Mathieu answered the door and officers obtained permission to search after smelling marijuana, leading to the arrests.

Officers found a marijuana grinder, digital scale and 10 bags of high grade marijuana, police said in a news release.

None of those arrested have commented publicly on the case.

QuoteJefferson "looked shocked" as the judge made his ruling Tuesday morning.

He may have to remain in jail until his next court hearing, which is scheduled for Dec. 12. However, he is undergoing a substance abuse evaluation and could be released sooner.
