Well he's five games into his young career and I thouhh people might want some stats and new info

Through 5 games he is averaging 12.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. His highest points totals were 23 points in his first game and 16 points in a double-double against the Cavs. He has hit double digits in rebounds twice (10 both times). He is looking pretty solid, just a little inconsistent. After scoring 23 in his first game he turned right around in game 2 and went 1-10 from the floor for only 5 points. He will improve but as of now he is looking good.  :razorback:

I watched yesterdays game on WatchESPNapp. He was laying bricks all day. he was 3 of 4 from 3pt but only other shot he made was a putback off a mcdermott missed shot. He had alot of shots go in and out early on. Despite that, Portis was touching the game in other areas. Good defense, several blocked shots, settings screens running picks.

Still though, Hoiberg benched Bobby in the 3rd, and he remained on the bench for the duration of the 4th quarter, until the final 22 seconds he was brought in for defense to protect the 2pt lead.

With Bobby on the bench and a small ball lineup, Chicago seem to hit another gear and surged back from a huge deficit to win the game.

I don't think bobby was benched intentionally. Its just the 5 guys on the court at the end of 3rd got hot and were really playing like a well oiled machine continually cutting the deficit going into the 4th quarter.

Bobby put up 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 2 blocks tonight.  His FG% wasn't the greatest (8/18 from the floor) but he was 9/9 from the FT line.

Would have loved to have seen him playing for the Hogs with this much freedom. There were moves with and without the ball and shots, both outside and inside jump hooks CMA apparently wouldn't let him take as a Hog. Oh well, we did make the tournament so we should be happy.

Mike Anderson gives as much freedom to his players on offense as any coach in the country.

Good Lord man. After the 2014 season BP was no where to be seen on any mock draft board. CMA ran the offense through that young man this year, vaulting him into lottery talk. BP got drafted in the first round, got guaranteed money and now it is on him. That is all you can ask for.

I respectfully disagree.

We rarely run set plays so, I'm not sure how there's not a lot of freedom.

Dr. Starcs

I have questioned CMA on several occasions.

Not giving his players freedom has never been one.

How many times did we continue to see Ky with the ball in his hands late in the game?  Has jacorey Williams ever met a shot he didn't like?  How many contested 3's have we taken with little to no passes in a possession?

Need I go on?

I don't see anyone questioning Calipari not allowing Townes to play much outside the paint and take jump shots.

How many minutes per game does he get in the regular season? Gonna be fun to watch the Bulls this year because of Bobby, especially if he gets major minutes.

There is this new thing called Zone defense that limits the type things you can do at the college level, especially if you don't have the 3 pt shooters to get teams out of Zone.

Our motion offense is one of the more free flowing offenses in the country. If anything I wish sometimes our players didn't have as much freedom and ran more set plays.

Your points are very valid and accurate. I guess I would have rather had a 1st round draft pick to be the center of that freedom and not the ones you spoke of. In other words, CMA should have told Williams and others they are not the focal point and stop taking bad shots. Something to ponder in the dog days of summer.

Log jam at the 4 & 5 for the Bulls. Gibson getting traded would free up some mins for BP. Barring injuries or trades, I doubt he'll average more than 8 mpg, if that.

We will see. I don't think Noah fits Freddie's system and he looked like he lost a step last year. I could see him losing sometime to BP. But gasol and Gibson are very good and I think will be excellent in Fred's system

Agree with you about Noah, but you can't forget about Mirotic, who averaged nearly 20 mpg last year. I'm really excited about BP, and every other Bulls fan I have talked to is ecstatic to have him. I've seen Boston fans whine about passing up on him to take Rozier, both after the draft and as recently as today. If he doesn't get a lot of mins this upcoming year, then I have no doubt that he will in the ones to come.

Gibson had ankle surgery in mid - June and is expected to be out 4 months. Noah's had a thumb injury - not sure what his status is.
No guarantee's either of these guys will be ready to start the season - so BP may get meaningful minutes sooner rather than later.

It's pretty cool that some NBA scouts said Portis was the most NBA-ready big man in the draft, because of his unique skill set. Developing Portis so well looks good on MA.

Yes - Anderson did a great job with Portis and Qualls.
They both left here much better players than the day they arrived.

It's just you. Because he's likely the one you're looking at the closest.

I get what you're saying, though, but there are plenty other players that play that hard. The superstars tend to make the game look really easy.

You maybe right. And I get it, it's an 82 game season, but unless it is my Laker's I don't watch it until playoff time. Like the last 2 years i am just perusing it still, because my Lakers aren't there.

Idk there are moments when they play really hard and moments where they don't during the regular season. No denying that.

Intensity certainly isn't lacking in the NBA game.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Hawg Red

"They" is pretty broad. Can't paint every NBA player with the lazy brush.

You're never going to see college-level intensity in the NBA just like you're never going to see NBA Finals-level intensity in college. They are different products, and at the end of the day, college players generally play harder because they have to. Game comes easier to NBA players. The entire college season is less than half of the NBA regular season, not even counting preseason and playoffs. It can be more of a marathon than a sprint in the NBA, but there are still players on probably every NBA team that play hard at all times (usually the less talented players). It's much easier to watch both if you set your expectation accordingly -- two different games. Both are entertaining.

Farrestor

I don't know I would say Westbrook plays with a different intensity then the rest of the players in nba who stand still until they get the ball.

How to tell someone hasn't watched the NBA much in the last decade--  the game is more movement oriented now, than at any time in its history.

I think the Bull's got a great value in Portis at their draft spot. It may be the end of the year or next season before he is ready to really contribute, but he will be a solid NBA player for many years.

There are other teams in the league besides two. Watch a Cavs regular season game and tell me there isn't a difference in Westbrook and the rest of the players. You can play zone in the NBA.  Its been legal since the 2001-2002 season.   I guess that not knowing that, goes hand in hand in not understanding the modern NBA, though-- so it explains a lot of your standpoint.

Exactly, there only being one does prove the league is unmoving. I can name on two hand how many players fight through screens and hustle up and down the floor. Even the commentators noted it when they started criticizing Dellavedova because he "hustled" too much and dove for balls and risked hurting other players. He was violating the certain "culture" of the NBA.

There is no doubt that NBA players lack a sense of urgency night in and night out when compared to the college game.

But someone pointed out earlier that this is really a biproduct of the length of schedule more than it is a reflection of attitude toward the game.

Can you play zone defense in the NBA?

Best Answer:  Today, yes. Prior to the 2001 season, the zone defense was never allowed in the nba.

It makes it a lot easier for teams to defend guys with an all star. Before the zone defense, 4 offensive players would go hung the baseline, with the superstar at the top of the key. All the defenders had to commit to a man. If they wanted to double they had to be within a distance of a few feet, so it left the middle of the court open for the superstar to cut through.

Today you can set up your guys is designated spots across the court and have 3 guys key in on LeBron for example, so that even if he beats his man, there aren't many big open spaces on the court .

From NBA rules, as of the 2001-02 season:

Illegal defense guidelines were eliminated in their entirety. A new defensive three-second rule prohibited a defensive player from remaining in the lane for more than three consecutive seconds without closely guarding an offensive player.

(Ooh, that one must really sting. Be careful about claiming to understand the modern NBA, when your version of modern is 15 years out of date.)

I'll quit arguing with moderators because that just isn't a good practice, but if you guys don't understand that you can't stay in the lane longer than 3 seconds = no zone then you were never going to get my point. The reason PG can score 20 + points in a game a season is due to not being able to sit in the lane (true zone defense).  but ok your right I apparently didn't know that they changed the rules in 2001 and you guys think a 3 second defense call allows you to play a zone ( Sagging in the lane) defense. Cheers

Zone defense in definition has nothing to do with "the lane" although most college and high school teams employ it to pack it in the paint. In a zone defense guys are assigned a "zone" to guard. So in theory, there could be 5 "zones" outside of the lane. Sophisticated Matchup zones are really what you would see in the NBA
