QuoteSometimes, Dave Aranda uses three defensive linemen in the normal down stance.

Sometimes, he uses two.

And, sometimes ... well, sometimes, he uses none.

"There's times when there's no down linemen. Everyone's standing up," said Gerry DiNardo, the former LSU head coach-turned football analyst.

DiNardo is looking into a camera during a five-minute video clip that aired on the Big Ten Network, where he now works analyzing the game he once coached. This segment is about Aranda, the Wisconsin defensive coordinator hired Friday to take over LSU's defense.

The segment is specifically devoted to Aranda's variable defensive front and pass-rushing philosophy. DiNardo watched a Wisconsin practice during this past season and then pored over game tape with Aranda for 30 minutes.

AM | #LSU landed a 38-yr-old up-and-comer with a variable D to replace Kevin Steele  as DC http://bit.ly/1mW0R4u

QuoteLSU's season opener against Wisconsin in September just got a lot more juicy.

The Tigers hired Wisconsin's Dave Aranda as defensive coordiantor, the school announced Friday night, replacing Kevin Steele with a 38-year-old up-and-comer from the west coast.

LSU announced the hire less than 72 hours after Steele left the school for Auburn, a surprising move that had coach Les Miles and director of football operations Dean Dingman on the hunt for a DC for the second time in two years.

Aranda, a native of Redlands, California, has led the Badgers defense for the last three seasons. Wisconsin this year finished the regular season No. 1 in the Football Bowl Subdivision in scoring defense, allowing 13.7 points per game.

Wisconsin beat Southern Cal 23-21 on Wednesday in the Holiday Bowl, and the Trojans also were believed to have been in the market for Aranda's services. USC gained just 286 yards in that contest.

Overall, Wisconsin ranks in the top seven nationally in five major defensive categories: total defense, rushing defense, scoring defense, passing yards allowed and defensive pass efficiency.

His defenses are known to be multiple and variable, having no real true base defensive formation, and they've had success against the popular spread offense - a scheme that's even crept into the Southeastern Conference...

Les Miles: LSU has hired an "absolute star" in DC Dave Aranda http://sec.news/1RfafNO

QuoteFor LSU's new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda, arriving in Baton Rouge, La. fulfilled a lifelong dream.

Wisconsin's former defensive chief has been a rising star in the coaching ranks the past few seasons and admitted that making it to the SEC was something he had always strived toward.

"I feel blessed and I'm humbled," Aranda said in his introductory press conference according to Gannett's Glenn Guilbeau. "I've always wanted to coach in this league."

This was the second year in a row that LSU has been forced to search for a defensive coordinator after Kevin Steele, coordinator for the 2015 season, left to take the same position at Auburn.

Steele was originally hired to replace the departed John Chavis, who bolted for Texas A&M following a reported contract dispute with the school...

"Extensive search took place a year ago," Miles said according to Higgins. "The absolute star was Dave Aranda."

Wisconsin's defense finished second nationally in scoring defense (13.7 points allowed per game) and third in total defense (268.5 yards allowed per game) under Aranda's watch this season. He said his defensive identity includes an aggressive mindset he calls "smart aggression" that takes some principles from the offensive side of the ball...

Aranda was not offered LSU DC last year, but Les did show interest. Aranda turned down that interest. This time, Les offered job immediately

Only concern about Dave Aranda is the last DC LSU had from Big 10 - Phil Elmassian in 2000 - had trouble early getting message to players.

Communication, football smarts make LSU's Dave Aranda special http://es.pn/1OrcAPy

QuoteWisconsin's defensive stats under Aranda were impressive. Why were those defenses so effective?

ESPN Big Ten writer Jesse Temple: Players praised Aranda for his ability to put them in position to succeed on the field. Part of that was Aranda maximizing his team's strengths, but the other part was having the confidence to know he could drastically change the way Wisconsin's defense operated. He immediately moved from a 4-3 defense to a 3-4, and the focus was always on using athleticism to pressure quarterbacks and confuse opposing offenses.

It really took into his second year at Wisconsin in 2014 for Aranda to have the type of players he wanted for the scheme. Aranda tried to disguise which players might blitz and which might drop into coverage, and his teams generally won that game-within-the-game battle. He had only one first-team all-Big Ten player in 2015 -- linebacker Joe Schobert -- but his defense showed the whole was greater than the sum of its parts...

No offense, but JD wouldn't know the laces from the pointy end of the football. The only reason Dinerdo was hired at LSU was because he coached had a player you may know, name of Bret Favre.

However, this should be a fun defensive scheme to watch.

Tigers' new defensive coordinator is known for utilizing multiple, creative alignments -- including 3-4 fronts that would represent a departure from the 4-3 base defense that LSU used in recent years

Quote"I think so much of it is trying to match guys," Aranda said. "If you take a defensive lineman and you get him in a spot to where he can win one-on-one, or you get a linebacker in a spot to where he can get in a spot to win one-on-one, I'm excited to find those one-on-ones and use our guys."

Les Miles still knows how to make a good hire

QuoteThe reviews for new LSU defensive coordinator Dave Aranda are glowing. Aranda comes to the Tigers from Wisconsin ā€” and imagine what a jump that must be. Wisconsin is missing two things that an SEC power like LSU has in abundance ā€” elite talent and a willingness to spend money on coaches salaries.

Of course, Aranda won't be able to get too far from his old team. LSU opens with Wisconsin at Lambeau Field in week 1.

Which defensive coordinators in college football get their teams off the field fastest & slowest? The list:

http://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/college-defensive-coordinators-that-get-teams-off-the-field-the-fastest

QuoteA year ago, only one of the 14 FBS head-coaching jobs went to a defensive coordinator: Pat Narduzzi. This offseason, six of the 28 jobs went to defensive coordinators (Kirby Smart, Will Muschamp, D.J. Durkin, Tracy Claeys, Barry Odom and Chris Ash). Also, Bronco Mendenhall and Lovie Smith were hired as head coaches with defensive backgrounds.

Schools went hunting for high-profile defensive coordinators this offseason: Dave Aranda (Wisconsin to LSU), Jeremy Pruitt (Georgia to Alabama), Bob Shoop (Penn State to Tennessee), ...

With that in mind, here is how defensive coordinators fared over the past three years with their percentage of drives that lasted six plays or less, according to SportSource Analytics (SSA).

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables was No. 1 in this category...

QuoteAranda separates defenses into two styles. One fights like the 18th-century British military ā€” stubborn, old-school, an immobile formation firing on a target leagues away. Another fights like the Americans ā€” a guerrilla-style attack, versatile, flexible and always on the move.

"What gave the (British) problems was guerrilla warfare," he said. "Behind the bushes, hanging from the trees."

Aranda didn't need to tell the room which of those fighting styles prevailed in the late 1700s. He didn't need to tell them which he uses in the 2010s, either.

The 39-year-old mans an inventive, attacking, variable scheme bent on disguising and simulating pressure and confusing offensive fronts. The system is built on physical man-to-man coverage and blitzing linebackers as often as 30 times a game.

This is his version of guerrilla warfare ā€”

QuoteAranda's installation of a 3-4 defense at LSU has led to position moves and role swaps.

For instance, Corey Thompson, a safety, is now playing outside linebacker. Former defensive end Tashawn Bower is an outside linebacker now, too, and tackle Christian LaCouture is playing at end.

Tre'Davious White, a wide cornerback during his first three seasons at LSU, has moved inside to nickel cornerback, Aranada confirmed. The coordinator wants a "big, physical corner" playing the nickel spot.

QuoteThey called it the 50, Billy Cannon says.

It's a defensive formation featuring five defensive linemen. If it sounds old-school, that's because it is.

Nearly 60 years later, the 50 is back at LSU ā€” kind of.

"The 5-2," said Pete Jenkins, a 50-year coaching veteran and defensive guru, "that's the old version of the 3-4."

"The 3-4 is a spin-off of a 5-2," quipped Jackie Sherrill, former head coach at Pittsburgh, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.

New defensive coordinator Dave Aranda has spent the past seven months installing the 3-4 at LSU, moving the Tigers away from the 4-3 base defense the program has used for the past 17 years. He's implementing a system one coach called the "flavor of the month" in college football.

The 3-4, these days, is a football fad.

3-4 uses three defensive linemen and four linebackers.

"The 3-4 gets more athletes on the field," said Verge Ausberry, LSU's deputy athletic director, who played middle linebacker for the Tigers when they used a 3-4 in the late '80s. "You can cover more field."

"The 5-2 became a 3-4 when people started thinking of the two defensive ends as linebackers instead of linemen," said Jenkins, who spent two stints with LSU in the '80s and again starting in 2000. "People started throwing the football more. Defenses moved to defending the pass. Guys like (LSU sophomore Arden Key) became a guy you rush sometimes and dropped into pass coverage sometimes as an outside (line)backer. In the old 5-2, he would be a defensive end."

At least five Southeastern Conference teams this season will use the 3-4 as the base defense, said Booger McFarland, a former LSU defensive lineman who covers the league for the SEC Network. LSU is set to join Kentucky, Georgia, Vanderbilt and Alabama in employing the 3-4 as its base defense.

QuoteThompson, a former safety, used the off-season to pack on muscle, beef up for his new role as LSU's F-linebacker. Thompson, a senior, gained about seven pounds.

He's not alone. Duke Riley, an outside linebacker last season, moved inside in new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's 3-4 scheme. Riley gained 10 pounds this off-season.

"Duke's gained a lot of weight!" laughed fellow inside linebacker Kendell Beckwith.

The point: LSU's linebackers are growing, literally, into their new roles.

For Thompson, the move ā€“ safety to outside linebacker ā€“ might be the most extreme of any of the position switches to unfold this spring. The F-linebacker is an outside linebacker and might be most similar to a strong-side linebacker in a 4-3 scheme.

The position is responsible for covering the tight end or a backfield player in pass coverage. On running downs, the F-linebacker mans his side ā€“ the wide side ā€“ of the field. Thompson says he expects to be in pass coverage about "50 percent of the time." He's comfortable in that role, of course - he played safety his previous three years at LSU.

"I would say, as far as coverage goes, I learned a lot from (secondary coach) Corey Raymond. I've still got that in my back pocket," Thompson said. "It's easier covering guys down closer to the line of scrimmage than it is at safety."

The F-linebacker will also blitz, too, and the position is, often times, not on the field in some passing down situations or in the five defensive back-nickel formation.

"F" stands for "field." The F-linebacker aligns to the wide side formation. If the ball's on the left hash, the wide is to the right, and so forth.

"If we're in the middle of the field, we line up to the formation," Thompson said. "As an F, you need to be able to cover, blitz, stop the run ā€“ all of it."

That's why Thompson beefed up during the off-season. The senior ate "anything," he said. Now at 222 pounds, Thompson needs extra weight to battle ā€“ whether it's in coverage or shedding run blocks ā€“ hefty Southeastern Conference tight ends and 240-pound running backs.

3-4 defense's primary mission, or at least one of them, is confusing the offense

QuoteThe Key's referred to as an outside linebacker in new defensive coordinator Dave Aranda's 3-4 alignment, but his role is much deeper than that. The hybrid position he occupies is one that blends duties normally carried out by two different players ā€” an outside linebacker and a defensive end. Key's position is just that ā€” it's key.

He's the disguise.

The offensive line breaks the huddle and sees Key standing across from the tight end.

Is he an outside linebacker who will drop back in pass coverage? Is he a defensive end who's gunning for the quarterback? Is he a delayed blitzer who wheels around inside and stuffs the center?

What is he?

"Some teams will honor Key as a down guy, and they will tag him as a down lineman and adjust their blocking schemes," Mawae said, "but you take one of your pass-dropping linebacker guys out, and now the offense has to determine, 'Is he a down guy?'

"It becomes a big issue in pass protection," Mawaea, former LSU and NFL offensive lineman continued. "You've got to re-designate who the middle linebacker is. It can create confusion. It makes an offense re-evaluate the defense."

Key has the potential to be a "fourth rusher," said Pete Jenkins, a longtime college defensive line coach who now serves as a consultant. But he's also liable to drop and cover your tight end.

"In a 3-4, you have a three-man front, but you have multiplicity in your fourth rusher," Jenkins said. "It could be an outside backer. It could be an inside backer. We would bring the strong safety up and drop the outside backer ā€” called an exchange."

He might be a legit DC, but LSU has about 8 or 9 NFL caliber players on the defensive side of the ball, some of whom (maybe half) are 1st and 2nd round talent.

Most DCs in the country could look like good DCs if they were coaching LSU's defensive talent.
