HA HA exactly.  I don't know about horrible as not really in it for college play.  But if you want to question is there a ___ out there how about a
Jaylin Williams - Fort Smith
Bobby Portis - Little Rock
Scottie Pippen - Hamburg
Joe Johnson - Little Rock
Moses Moody - Little Rock
Malik Monk - Bentonville (and played for Cal)
Daniel Gafford - El Dorado
List goes on and on.  Nick Smith is, was, could be a good player but he isn't the best this state has produced.

Quote from: Archawg on Today at 07:20:33 amI'm wondering if they had coaches on staff that their primary responsibility was offense strategy and defense strategy would that help.  I'm thinking ( don't really know) that team overall philosophy just comes from the head coach.  If he's a defensive coach then the team will likely be a defensive team. Maybe, they need a coordinator/strategist for both ends... sort of like football staffs.  Not sure many basketball coaches would set this up because they would give up some control.

The above certainly wouldn't solve the time  or  skill limitations you mentioned above.  However, some teams seem to be able to incorporate strategies on both ends better than others.  I don't believe it was a coincidence that the 2 teams that ended up in the finals had a high efficiency rating on both ends (I believe).

Hurley has done an incredible job of building a culture. Cam Spencer is a basketball psycho that lives and breathes the game. That kind of energy is infectious.

Painter has mostly been an offensive coach. I think there's been one year where they were just ok offensively but stout defensively. And then this year they had a 7'4" guy and some improved perimeter D over last year with the addition of Jones.

There will always be an exception or two, but I think for the most part there are certain calling cards that a coach will hang their hat on and when they've got some dudes they will overcome the "shortcomings" in coaching on the other side of the ball (look at Houston, always tough on defense; struggle to score unless they have an NBA level creator. look at Bama, where they've always been great on offense, but struggle on D when they don't have an elite rim protector).

Cal's teams used to be absolutely stifling on defense. It'll be interesting to see how this team ends up performing and the rest of the folks he brings in on staff. Hope we're just darn good at both.

He was at Cheers in the private room with a room full, many of which appeared to be recruits (Wednesday night).

Quote from: donnie on Today at 06:38:13 amThink it's a combination of things mainly being 1) limited amount of practice time and 2) most college kids are just not that good (e.g. there's just not an abundance of two way players; those guys also don't stay around because they go to the NBA)

Quote from: SquidBilly on Today at 07:00:33 amSo what are the rules about stops and starts for an SEC game?  Seems like bumping up the start time on Friday to account for a few weather delays and then a double header on Saturday should allow all 3 games to be played.  However the boys will need to come out to score early and often in the off chance a game gets called after 5 innings due to storms.

I don't know what the rules are, but we definitely don't want weather delays on Friday, may take Hagen Smith out of the game earlier than expected
