By slipping to the second round and  34th overall pick, Ulis will be reunited with best friend and former Wildcats teammate Devin Booker a year later on the Phoenix Suns.

"It felt like it had been too long since we drafted a Kentucky guard," Phoenix general manager Ryan McDonough joked to local reporters.

His roster is stacked with five former UK guards: Ulis, Booker, Brandon Knight, Eric Bledsoe and Archie Goodwin.

Former Vanderbilt point guard Wade Baldwin was selected Thursday night by the Memphis Grizzlies with the 17th pick in the first round of the NBA draft, and center Damian Jones with the last pick by the Golden State Warriors.

Baldwin, a 6-foot-4 sophomore from Belle Mead, N.J., passed on his final two years of eligibility at Vanderbilt to enter the draft, and Jones, a 7-foot center from Baton Rouge, La., passed on his final year.

They became the sixth and seventh players in Vanderbilt history to be drafted in the first round, joining John Jenkins and Festus Ezeli (2012), Will Perdue (1988), Jeff Turner (1984) and Clyde Lee (1966).

Baldwin became the fourth-highest Commodore ever selected behind Lee, (third by San Francisco/Golden State Warriors), Turner (seventh by New Jersey Nets) and Perdue (11th by Chicago Bulls).

Draft leftovers

▪  With Jamal Murray, Skal Labissiere and Tyler Ulis, UK increased its totals during John Calipari's seven seasons as coach to 28 players picked, 21 in the first round and 11 in the second round.

In that time, Duke and Kansas each had 13 players drafted (11 Dukies in the first round, nine Jayhawks in the first round). As for top 10 picks, UK (11) has had as many as Duke (six), Kansas (four), North Carolina (one) and Louisville (none) combined.

▪  Labissiere, who was the 28th player chosen in the first round, became the highest pick from Haiti since Samuel Dalembert was the 26th pick in 2001.

▪  The Memphis Grizzlies picked point guard Wade Baldwin IV of Vanderbilt with the 17th pick. He became the highest pick from Vandy since Will Perdue was the 11th pick in 1988.

Some saw the NBA Draft as evidence U.S. basketball is declining. Could not be further from the truth.

It was a terrible year for American basketball prospects. The United States produced only two of the top three players chosen in the 2016 NBA Draft, and trained only three of the top three.

Think about this. High school talent analysts promised you the recruiting class of 2015 was among the worst in a generation. Freshman performance in 2015-16 college basketball underscored that this projection seemed accurate. And still each of the top three prospects to be chosen by NBA teams went through AAU, high school and a single year of college basketball in the U.S.

However, because the NBA chose a significant number of international players through the course of two draft rounds, we suddenly are being reminded of the supposed crisis in American basketball. You know, AAU is bad for the game, all of that.

The same song you've been hearing since Ben Simmons was in diapers. (In Australia, of course.)

There were 14 players born outside the U.S. among the 30 players chosen in the first round of Thursday's draft. Half of the 14 played NCAA basketball, however, and one played U.S. high school basketball but no college. Overall, 34 of the 60 players chosen were born elsewhere.

And thus we are being assailed by the same old quotes about European players being better trained, about how prospects over there practice more and play fewer games and thus become, you betcha, "more skilled."

When we consider the results of the most recent NBA season, however, we are left to beg the question: More skilled at what, exactly? It doesn't seem Euro-trained players are more skilled at any of the essential basketball fundamentals.

Just look at the stats:

— Of the top 50 scorers in the 2015-16 NBA season, 44 were U.S. products. Two of the non-Americans played for NCAA colleges.
— Of the top 30 in assists, 25 were U.S. products.
— Shooting is a pretty important skill, right? Aren't the Euro-trained players supposed to be better shooters? So how come 26 of the top 30 in 3-pointers made and all of the top 10 in percentage were American?
— Over the past five years, 24 of the 25 first-team All-NBA choices were American players, and 43 of the 50 on the second and third teams.

Ben Simmons left the fourth quarter of the 76ers game against the Boston Celtics in the Utah summer league. Simmons had cramps in both calves per the broadcast and did not return to the game.

Simmons was the first No. 1 pick from LSU since Shaquille O'Neal in 1992.
