Caliparinoia? Kentucky's coach needs enemies to fuel his success

The suggestion of shadowy forces trying to thwart his efforts is a common theme in Calipari's career. From Massachusetts, where he debuted as a head coach at age 29, through time with the New Jersey Nets, Memphis and now Kentucky, he's compiled an enemies list that would make Richard Nixon proud.

The Boston Globe, which reported on classroom performance by UMass players. The Nets' front office, which supposedly planted listening devices in his office. The Ratings Percentage Index, which did not give Memphis its due. The E.W. Scripps Company, which is headquartered in — aha — Cincinnati, home city of a Memphis rival. The Southeastern Conference, which sought to snuff out competition from Memphis. And, most recently, media types that wish UK and its coach ill.

Even his greatest professional achievement, guiding Kentucky to the 2012 national championship, failed to dull Calipari's sense for subterfuge.

"There's a lot of people not rooting for us and me, would you agree?" Calipari asked reporters in the summer of 2012. "Am I paranoid or is that the truth?"

Even Calipari's friends say he's paranoid in the sense of perceiving many threats to his own and his teams' success.

"I always tell John this: Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean people are not out to get you," said ESPN analyst Fran Fraschilla...

fter UK beat Ole Miss on Tuesday, John Calipari took it upon himself to criticize the media, alleging that his team is treated unfairly by The Fourth Estate and even going so far as to suggest that in writing off the Cats, some writers are expressing their "hope" rather than their "opinion." Specifically, he was referring to Kentucky's drop in the AP poll, from 11th to 18th, after splitting a pair of road games against two teams with NCAA aspirations. Duke, conversely, rose 6 spots in the AP poll after also going .500 in a pair of road games. However, upon further review, it appears that the media was actually generous to the Cats in dropping them to 18th. After all, they lost to LSU, who is unranked. If you lose to an unranked team, you shouldn't be ranked either, should you? Again, look at Duke. They have no trouble beating unranked teams like Vermont and Virginia. Sure, they lost to other unranked teams like Clemson and Notre Dame, but these are merely the exceptions that prove the rule. And if the media is so biased against UK like Calipari alleges...

Last Saturday, UK traveled to Missouri and won a hard fought game against the Tigers, 84-79. This does not bode well for Kentucky...

Too often in the contemporary world of athletics we see people whose priorities are significantly out of whack. Calipari is apparently no exception...

Over the past few days, news leaked that the NBA is considering requiring players to stay in college for two years prior to being eligible for the draft. This is the last thing John Calipari wants to see...

Last Saturday at Mississippi State, a sluggish UK got a jolt of energy from reserves Jarrod Polson and Jon Hood. This does not bode well for Kentucky. Ever since his arrival on campus, John Calipari has marketed his program as the one school in America where elite high school players can flourish right off the bat, and parlay their immediate success into what they really want: NBA money. But as soon as it was reported across the country last weekend that the Cats relied on contributions from a couple of seniors who were not McDonald's All-Americans, the five years of Coach Cal trying to have this program portrayed as "One and Done U." went down the drain.

On this date in 2015, coaches will not be allowed to Snapchat recruits because Tom Crean inevitably crossed the line.

The last few road games for Kentucky (Mississippi State, Auburn, Ole Miss) has seen a significant number of UK fans find their way into the arena. The reason for this is clear: The Kentucky basketball program simply doesn't appeal to rival SEC fans the way it used to...

Tuesday's Kentucky/Ole Miss game showed what happens when a team plays hard, plays together and has fun. I'm talking, of course, about the Rebels' big 2nd half run...

During Saturday's UK/Florida game, former Cats Josh Harrelson and Doron Lamb received an enthusiastic welcome from the Rupp Arena crowd during a timeout in the 2nd half. This does not bode well for Kentucky. It simply serves to underscore how dissatisfied Cat fans are with the current UK team...

In selecting and seeding teams for the NCAA Tournament, the selection committee puts more weight on victories on the opponent's court than in neutral-site games, chairman Ron Wellman said Wednesday.

The committee also discounts neutral-site victories if the winners had a large majority of fans in the arena, thus giving the game a home-court advantage, Wellman said.

The logical conclusion for Kentucky fans is to stay away from neutral-site games so UK can gain the maximum amount of value from victories...

A Bad Goodbye (Feat. Wynonna Judd): Near the end of the UK-LSU game, Tigers guard and Kentucky native Anthony Hickey fouled out. In a shocking turn of events, Kentucky fans gave him a standing ovation. Make no mistake, however, UK fans were not applauding Hickey's 20 points. Nor were they applauding his gutsy performance or the fact that he made big play after big play to keep LSU in the same. No, the real reason Cat fans applauded him was obvious: they are furious that John Calipari didn't recruit Anthony Hickey, and they wanted to let Coach Cal know it...

After the 2010 NBA Draft, which saw 5 Kentucky players selected in the 1st round, John Calipari famously called it "the greatest day in the history of Kentucky basketball." At the time, many – if not all – UK fans disagreed with him, claiming that they could point out at least 7 days that were better: the days when Kentucky won national championships. However, in hindsight, it turns out that not only was that day not the best day in program history, it was quite possibly the worst day in program history. The 2010 NBA Draft showed recruits that doing a one year stint in Lexington was the safest route to guaranteed millions in the NBA. As such, recruits now show up on campus with one thing on their mind: the NBA. They do not give one whit about college, or their teammates, or college basketball, or UK fans, or blue or white. Sure, most of them tend to return to Lexington after they leave (but not all; whither Kevin Galloway?), but this is likely due to the allure of the Bluegrass region, namely, the horse farms, the bourbon and the castle out on Versailles Road...

During Monday's press conference, John Calipari made the statement that "it's hard to have fun" playing basketball at Kentucky. UK senior Jon Hood, in a blatant show of insubordination, vociferously disagreed with his coach, saying that he "has had a blast" playing at UK. It isn't often that you a see a 5th year senior call his coach "stupid" in so many words, but by claiming that he's had fun in Lexington the past half decade, that's exactly what Hood did. In what was perhaps not a coincidence, the Cats came out the next game and shot 32% from the field...

Last week, former UK commit (and current New Mexico State junior) K.C. Ross-Miller got suspended when he threw the ball at an opposing player, thereby inciting a riot on the court between fans and players. This does not bode well for Kentucky....

Florida made history this year by becoming the first team in SEC history to go 18-0 in the regular season. Kentucky likes to bill itself as the "greatest tradition in the history of college basketball," but the Wildcats have never, in over 100 years of playing the sport, gone 18-0 in the SEC regular season. While excuse-makers will point out that UK has gone undefeated in league play 14 times in the past, the fact of the matter is that none of those regular seasons consisted of 18 games. 16, yes, but not 18. Huge difference. Also, it isn't like this is the first year in the modern era that the league has had 18 regular season games (it's the 2nd), so it's not like UK can use this as an excuse...

At the outset of this season, Kentucky was #1, and had designs on a perfect season. John Calipari even went so far as to guarantee a spotless record when he said "we want to win every game." However, the wheels soon came off, and UK now finds itself unranked. Will this cause the current batch of Kentucky commits to rethink their decision to play college basketball in Lexington? To find out, a reporter recently called each one of them to ask. Though the reporter was unable to speak to any of the recruits themselves, Devin Booker's 6th grade coach said Booker was "upset, probably" that the Cats are no longer in the top 25. Will this cause Booker to try to get out of his letter of intent? Probably. In what can only be seen as a bad omen, he has yet to show up on campus. Similarly, the middle school bus driver of Tyler Ulis said that...

When one compares Kentucky's historical performance in the NCAA Tournament to that of other schools, it is clear to see the underachievement that has plagued the UK program. In 53 NCAA Tournament appearances, the Cats have only won 8 national championships. Compare this to other top programs like North Carolina (5 titles in 45 appearances), UCLA (11 in 44), Kansas (3 in 43) and Louisville (3 in 40), and the stark reality hits you in the face like a dead flounder: Kentucky has lost 45 NCAA Tournament games, more than any other program in NCAA history. I'm guessing Coach Cal will not be adding this little tidbit to any motivational videos.

Tom Crean has been called many things in his career. "Whiny," "creepy," "not good at coaching," etc. But one thing he has never been called is "dumb."* It's no wonder that IU fans stormed the internet with proclamations of their historical dominance as being the reason they opted not to play in a postseason event this year...

On this date in 2015, Indiana will raise a banner that says "Refused to Participate in the 2014 CBI."

The 2013-14 season is almost over, and Kentucky is still trying to atone for the disaster was the 2012-13 season. John Calipari's team is trying to do something that no team in the history of college basketball has ever done: Win a national championship relying primarily on 6 freshmen who were McDonald's All Americans. With disappointing losses to a whole bunch of teams, the team will fail...

Karma Police: After initial reports that Manhattan coach Steve Masiello had agreed to become the new coach at the University of South Florida, it was announced that the deal was nixed, as Masiello has lied on his resume. As it turns out, he never graduated from UK, despite claiming he did. This is a huge black eye for the University of Kentucky...

Lucky: Last Sunday in a Round of 32 NCAA Tournament game, UK edged Wichita State 78-76. The contest was dubbed an instant classic, as it featured several lead changes, big shots, plot twists and heroic plays. This does not bode well for Kentucky. In five years as the head coach at UK, John Calipari has only lost one game to a school not in a BCS conference. That game, of course, was what objective journalist Pat Forde once called "the low point for Kentucky basketball in 24 years:" Robert Morris in the 2013 NIT. After living through the nightmare that was the 2012-13 season, UK fans probably thought they wouldn't be sweating out a ballgame with a mid-major anymore... Nebertheless (sic), despite having the most ballyhooed recruiting class in history, the Cats found themselves in a nailbiter with a team that lost games to Drake, Evansville and Bradley.*

If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band): After consecutive nail-biting wins over Wichita State, Louisville and Michigan in the NCAA Tournament, Kentucky fans were shocked. How could a team featuring 7 McDonald's All Americans such as UK be in close games with three teams featuring a grand total of 1 McDonald's All American? Yes, that's right. Of the roughly 40 players on the rosters of WSU, UofL and UM, only one of them was a Burger Boy: Louisville's Wayne Blackshear. If the Cats continue to struggle against teams with inferior talent, their time in this weekend's Final Four figures to be brief...

Blame it on Texas: In Sunday's Elite Eight game vs. Michigan, Kentucky reserve Marcus Lee was a revelation, scoring 10 points and grabbing 8 rebounds. This, of course, leads to several questions, such as "why hasn't John Calipari played him more? Is it because he is a bad coach? It must be because he's a bad coach, right?" Despite the fact that he has been relegated to the end of the bench all year, Lee became the first player on the team to score on four put-back dunks in one half all season, probably...

Deep in the Heart of Texas: After a season filled with trials, tribulations and losses, UK has finally started playing up to its potential and now finds itself in this weekend's Final Four. This does not bode well for Kentucky. It was expected over the last few months that the Cats would return several players from this year's team. However, this March run has made that particular scenario highly unlikely...
