Chris Holtmann replacement: Odds released on next Ohio State basketball coach
by:
Nick Schultz

QuoteHoltmann amassed a 137-85 record in Columbus and took Ohio State to four straight NCAA Tournaments after leaving Butler. However, the Buckeyes missed out on the big dance last year and were struggling again this year with a 9-25 record in conference play over the last season-plus.

The oddsmakers at BetOhio have released the initial list of potential candidates to take over the program, with some local names making the cut

Wes Miller, Cincinnati head coach: +450

Sean Miller, Xavier head coach: +700

Dusty May, Florida Atlantic head coach: +1000

Lamont Paris, South Carolina head coach: +1200
A rising star in the head coaching ranks, Lamont Paris is putting together a special season in his second year at South Carolina. The Gamecocks are 21-3 this year and have won seven straight games through SEC play, and that success could get the Ohio native some looks for other jobs this year.

Paris previously worked as an assistant coach at Wisconsin under Bo Ryan and had an 87-72 record in five years at Chattanooga before taking the South Carolina job. Those B1G connections could be a factor in Ohio State's decision to replace Chris Holtmann and are likely a reason Paris appears on the odds board.

Anthony Grant, Dayton head coach: +1200

Pat Kelsey, Charleston head coach: +1500

Will Wade, McNeese State head coach: +1500

Other: +250
While there are some intriguing names on BetOhio's board, there's a possibility another name emerges in the search to replace Chris Holtmann. Paris and Wes Miller came up right away as possibilities, according to The Field of 68's Jeff Goodman.

Bjork will play a big role in naming a replacement. Regardless, assistant coach Jake Diebler will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season.

Lamont Paris delivers message on rebounding from back-to-back losses
by:
Chandler Vessels

QuoteSouth Carolina was at one point this season the hottest team in college basketball but has cooled off considerably this past week. After a pair of top 10 wins against Kentucky and Tennessee last month, the Gamecocks climbed all the way up to No. 11 in the AP poll ahead of a top 25 matchup against Auburn on the road Wednesday.

That's where the seven-game winning streak would come to an end as South Carolina suffered an embarrassing 101-61 loss. It had a chance to bounce back at home against LSU this weekend, but squandered a 16-point lead to lose 64-63. It marked the first time this year the Gamecocks lost back-to-back games.

"You've gotta learn fast," Paris said. "There's lessons to be taught from winning and from losing. The only real travesty about this game will be if you don't learn some things from it. So there'll be some learning, but I think it's more about doing also. I think we need to do a better job in terms of execution."

South Carolina seemingly had the game against LSU in control on Saturday as it held a 41-25 with 16:58 remaining. The Gamecocks led by double digits as late as 8:15 remaining until the Tigers charged back

Really like Lamont Paris. Always have. Suggested people be patient with him last season, and that South Carolina would get better.

Thought it would take a few years, though. Not this soon. What a job he's done. Has to be the clubhouse leader for National Coach of the Year.

by:
Sam Gillenwater

QuoteThe media predicted South Carolina to finish in last place in the Southeastern Conference in the preseason poll. Now, after the Gamecocks tied for second with a 25-6 (13-5) record with several weeks as part of the AP Poll, they have since named Lamont Paris as the SEC Coach of the Year.

With that honor comes a bonus for Paris in his second season in Columbia. Per Steve Berkowitz at USA Today, he will receive his incentive of $25,000 for that achievement.

Lamont Paris eyeing SEC Tournament as 'good precursor to the NCAA Tournament'

by:
Thomas Goldkamp

QuoteSouth Carolina basketball team put together a tremendous second season under coach Lamont Paris, earning the No. 5 seed in this year's SEC Tournament.

And Paris believes this week in Nashville affords his team a real chance to get ready for what lies ahead: the NCAA Tournament. The Gamecocks have fought all year for this.

"We want to win the SEC Tournament, there's a lot that goes with that," Paris said Wednesday on the Paul Finebaum Show. "But I think it's a good precursor to the NCAA Tournament just in terms of there's nothing guaranteed other than the game we play tomorrow at 2:30. And you must play well, you must compete well and you must also make plays in order to advance. And if you do enough of those things and you earn another 40 minutes, then you do it all again."

South Carolina, Lamont Paris agree to contract extension, $4 million salary through 2030

by:
Thomas Goldkamp

QuoteFollowing a wildly successful second season under coach Lamont Paris, South Carolina has reportedly agreed on a contract extension for the head man.

ESPN reports that the Gamecocks will extend the SEC Coach of the Year through the 2029-30 season, paying Paris an average of more than $4 million annually. The deal is pending board approval that is set to be decided on Friday.

Paris is coming off a season in which his squad showed remarkable improvement.

The Gamecocks went 11-21 during his first season in charge, which included a 4-14 mark in conference play. This year the squad improved to 25-6 overall and finished tied for second place in the SEC with a 13-5 league record.

Lamont Paris points to 'silver lining' of early SEC Tournament exit

by:
Nick Kosko

QuoteParis and South Carolina had quite the season to this point but it ended early in the SEC Tournament.

Still, there's a silver lining to that exit with more basketball to play. The Gamecocks were blasted by Auburn 86-55 and the Tigers eventually ended up in Sunday's SEC Championship Game.

But, that means there's plenty of time to reset for Paris.

"I think, one, resting up," Paris said postgame. "We'd like to play as many games in this conference tournament as possible. We'd like to win this conference tournament.

"The silver lining in it is that we got a couple guys banged up, Myles Stute, as you noticed today, was not dressed up. That's more time for guys like him. Ta'Lon looked like he was banged up a little bit today. I didn't have him back in towards the end of the game."

Ta'Lon Cooper, referenced by Paris, played just 22 minutes

"I think what it does is give guys some time to rest up and heal up and get treatment and recover," Paris said. "I think that's a big part of it. So if not for winning it all, I guess this is probably — some people would probably prefer this than play another game and still not win it all. Some seeding things may go into that in terms of the NCAA tournament. I just think it will be a good time for us to get back and try to get off of our feet, rest, then do a lot of recovery."

Lamont Paris bemoans 'stagnant' South Carolina offense early on against Oregon

by:
Thomas Goldkamp

QuoteSouth Carolina opened up the NCAA Tournament against Oregon a little off-kilter, thrown off by some early zone defense the Ducks threw out to stymie the Gamecocks.

Coach Lamont Paris wasn't thrilled with how his team responded to it initially. Things were just a little tentative.

"Yeah we've got to be confident," Paris told TNT sideline reporter Evan Washburn during the first half. "You've got to play aggressively and play with confidence, but we've got to get moving also. I thought we were stangant a little bit when we saw the zone the first time."

Lamont Paris looks back on the year

Loss to Oregon

by:
Matt Connolly

QuoteSouth Carolina didn't go on the run that it was hoping to in the NCAA Tournament as the sixth-seeded Gamecocks lost to No. 11 seed Oregon in the first round. Still, there's no denying that it was a special season for Lamont Paris and his team.

South Carolina was picked to finish in last place in the SEC, before tying for second in the league with a 13-5 record. Paris was asked to look back:

"I think one day here in the next couple days to a week or whatever, all that stuff will start to set in on what we actually did. When you're in the midst of it, it's hard to do that," Paris said. "Someone's going to tell you, 'Hey, you did this, you had a winning season, you're locked into a winning season' or 'you're locked into a winning SEC season' or 'you got double figure SEC wins first time in however long.'

"They keep coming. They keep coming and you're just so locked into trying to do what you need to do to try to give the guys this opportunity right here [in the NCAA Tournament], which was our ultimate goal."

South Carolina finished the season with a 26-8 record, including a 13-5 mark in SEC play. The Gamecocks also had plenty of big wins, including knocking off Kentucky, Tennessee and Florida.

"It'll set in here in a couple of days probably what we — what they really did. I didn't do a whole bunch, but they did a lot of things this year," Paris said. "So, yeah, that'll set in here over the next couple of days, but it's hard to think about that as much right now when you're really just worried more about your guys and how they're feeling."

After beating down South Carolina, No. 11 seed Oregon nearly knocked off No. 3 seed Creighton in the round of 32. However, the Bluejays survived in double overtime. Creighton will now face Tennessee in the Sweet 16.
