Sources reporting a 10/240 offer which would be tied for the 3rd largest contract in history with Pujols.  Expect the Mariners to make a run at Price as well.

Grossly overpaid.

The Mariners will come to regret this.

Yep.  I was hoping the Yankees would do something like this.  Not an irrelevant team.

I'd do the same. LaRussa's a nutjob and would probably throw at his head.

ETA: Empty bottle, obviously.

The Mariners had to overpay to get Cano to play there. The interesting thing is, the sabermetrics suggest that Cano is worth the money if he stays healthy, which will be difficult to do in his upper 30s. The problem with this contract is he will not be near as productive playing at Safeco as he was at Yankee Stadium. Safeco is an offensive suckfest where fly balls go to die. The Mariners will still battle the Angels for last place in the West.

I agree. I don't think Cano is that great. He played for a good team, but I don't get it.

Yet another $200+ mil contract that will probably not pan out, especially on the back end. Teams are going to learn eventually. Quit giving the aging guys the big money. If you were to give it to a guy like Trout who is still young, it would probably pan out, but they know that they don't have to pay them like that right now.

The fact that Cano was wanting over $300 mil was laughable. Very good ballplayer, but Yankee stadium inflated his numbers.

I think it was more of a statement move my Seattle than anything. Something to get their fans talking and thinking "Hey.. look at our team trying to compete with the big dogs."
Smart move? Not by a long shot. Good luck trying to dump that contract on someone else in a year or two.
ched come back pls

Yeah, it would be different if MLB was like the NFL. You could sign a guy to a big, splashy deal, but have only part of it guaranteed.

These deals are crazy. There is no way Cano can outperform this contract or perform up to its worth. Never mind if he gets hurt in a couple of years and misses significant time.

Do you happen to have any rapping skills? I think we could set you up with DJ Khaled and you could make a song entitled, "All I Do Is Bitch"

Arguably one of the top 5 offensive players as well.    Yeah, they paid  too much for years 8,9, and 10.  The contract is livable, if they get quality production for the price they're paying in years 5 and 6.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

And to add to this, the Mariners need many more quality players to become viable again.  What good does it do to sign one player unless you are willing to sign several more to become competitive again?

It shows a lot of things-- a willingness to spend to be competitive, high among them.   A signing like this isn't just about Robinson Cano;  it is about making Seattle a viable destination for free agents.   That won't change overnight, but this is a vital step.

Why are your twins spending relatively big money on mediocre starters?

Because the turd-show of the rotation last year crushed any chance at trying to field a competitive team.

These guys aren't long term solutions, by any stretch of the imagination-- but they are stopgaps that are cost controlled for the next 4 years

4 years is semi-long term. Think they could be trade bait in July if the season doesn't go as planned? Theo Epstein approach.

Not really. The majority of starting pitching in the system is low minors stuff, so 3 to 4 years is about ideal to use as a bridge-- then, in the last year or so of the deal, they have trade value as a pre-inflated asset.
