"I CALLED THAT PROSTITUTE, BROTHER!"-   Hugh Freeze
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

QuoteRainer Sabin: The last active SEC coach to beat Nick Saban more than once is gone.

Say goodbye to Hugh Freeze, who resigned Thursday after Ole Miss uncovered a pattern of misconduct.

The news was shocking and sudden, but the collapse of the Freeze regime was gradual and protracted. A lengthy NCAA investigation, which kicked into high gear in 2015, imperiled his program.

Then, a lawsuit by Houston Nutt related to how Ole Miss handled the NCAA probe focused the spotlight directly on Freeze. In his complaint, Nutt alleged that Freeze conducted a smear campaign against him. The news of Freeze's legal entanglement was a bombshell and it dropped July 12, one day before Freeze was scheduled to address reporters at SEC Media Days.

In 2016, Alabama ran over its competition, defeating eight of its nine league opponents by ten or more points.

The only one that nearly toppled Saban's bunch was Freeze's Rebels. They led 24-3 at one point before the Tide staged a remarkable comeback that prevented Ole Miss from beating Alabama for the third consecutive year.

"It was a really difficult game for a coach to have to suffer through but we made it," Saban said after the 48-43 victory.

Implicit in the comment was that Freeze's team had given the Crimson Tide fits as it did in 2015 and 2014, when Ole Miss attacked with tempo and the run-pass option plays that have long tormented Saban. While Ole Miss never challenged Alabama in the standings save for 2015, the Rebels did pose an existential threat that the Crimson Tide needed to address through philosophical changes.

"I think this guy's one of the best coaches in our league and does a great job with the players that he has," Saban said of Freeze last September. "The fastball pace that they use offensively is always challenging, and it's certainly something that our players are going to have to do a good job with."

Now, Freeze is on the fast train out of Oxford.

Athletic Director Ross Bjork said at a hastily called news conference that Chancellor Jeff Vitter also attended:

QuoteIn our analysis, we discovered a pattern of conduct that is not consistent with our expectations as the leader of our football program. As of yesterday, there appeared to be a concerning pattern.

#OleMiss: Hugh Freeze forced out after "a pattern of personal misconduct" that was discovered & "is totally unrelated to the NCAA case."

#Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork: "We proactively looked into the rest of (Hugh Freeze's) phone records & found a concerning pattern."

#OleMiss AD Ross Bjork, asked about if the "inappropriate conduct" w Hugh Freeze refers to escort services, declines to elaborate.

#OleMiss AD Bjork on Hugh Freeze's ouster: "There's no buyout. No settlement."

Oddest aspect of this Hugh Freeze mess is he probably could've had that one mystery phone call redacted & it might not have gone any further

QuoteOn Jan. 21, 2016, Hugh Freeze tweeted, "Been a great week of recruiting but so glad to see my girls and be back in Oxford for the weekend. And LOVED the call I just got. #SIPBOYZ16"

Less than three hours earlier, he called a Florida-based escort on his university-issued cell phone.

That phone call led to his resignation Thursday after Ole Miss discovered a "pattern of conduct" unbecoming of the football program's leader following media inquiries about the escort.

It's a stunning fall from grace for Freeze who was making more than $4.7 million annually at Ole Miss and will now receive no buyout because the school had enough to fire him through a moral clause in his contract. He's earned himself the ignominy of being one of college football's biggest frauds.

This was a man who made religion his public persona, even using the NCAA's long inquiry into Ole Miss as an example of the persecution he faced.

"Coach Freeze told me when you're that big and out there with faith in Christ, he's like 'What do you expect? Jesus got nailed to the cross," recruit Chevin Calloway told SBNation though the Ole Miss coach denied that characterization.

His Twitter was full of daily Bible messages, Christian allegories and other inspiring messages about football. He was a living embodiment of the cliche "Faith, Family and Football." When he interviewed for the job, he even said that "Jesus Christ will be at the center of it all" and "if that's not what you want, I'm not your guy..."

...Freeze is different because of everything he did leading up to this moment. He put himself on such a pedestal that even a minor scandal threatened his perch. Ole Miss supported him throughout the NCAA investigation and likely would have continued to do so had his extracurricular actions not come to light. He was cocky and defiant the whole way, a display of hubris that rival coaches couldn't believe. He'll never live down that infamous tweet asking anyone with knowledge of NCAA violations, to email Ole Miss' compliance department.

If you sense rejoicing over Freeze's resignation, it's centered around the satisfaction of a sanctimonious person receiving his comeuppance. If judged on hypocrisy alone, Freeze would be the kind of five-star recruit that'd get Ole Miss in trouble...

QuoteTuberville, who coached at Ole Miss from 1995-1998: "Well, I'm floored to be honest with you. I've known Hugh Freeze a long time, and I talked to him when he took the job at Ole Miss a few years ago. I hate it for him and his family and his career — everything that goes along with the next 30, 40 years of his life...

"Personally, I think they just need to go in and just wipe out the entire administration, get everything cleaned out and start over– because obviously people knew what was going on — and just get back to being Ole Miss and clean the slate and get people in there that want to get the job done the right way," Tuberville said. "You know, it's just a sad day for them, because people in that state really want to win games and want to be competitive at Ole Miss. And they've done a great job to this point. Now, they've had a terrible setback. They just need a new beginning.

QuoteOXFORD | Ole Miss heard rumblings about Hugh Freeze's personal life as early as last fall.

Rumors surged through Oxford in January, and Ole Miss officials confronted Freeze with questions. He denied everything, per sources.

Last week, however, hours before news broke regarding Houston Nutt's lawsuit, Ole Miss officials were scrambling, panicked. Rumors surfaced about a call on Freeze's university-issued phone last week.

Ole Miss officials knew there was a potential problem. Rumors that Freeze might not go to Hoover, Alabama, for Southeastern Conference Media Days were just that — rumors. However, the next few days were chaotic.

They culminated Thursday with Freeze's resignation after five years as the Rebels' head coach. He resigned without a buyout, and Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork said Thursday night in a hastily-called press conference Freeze would have been fired had he declined to resign.

What happened? One of the calls on Freeze's phone went to an escort service. The call was made during a recruiting visit to Tampa, Florida. An attorney and a fan site journalist, apparently working in conjunction, knew the call was potentially damning. They shopped it to multiple national reporters. No one took the bait, but there was blood in the proverbial water, and rumors of Freeze's behavior took on a life of their own.

I'll tread lightly here, but Ole Miss officials were asking questions about Freeze's personal life as early as last fall. Bjork confirmed Thursday that Freeze was confronted with rumors earlier this year. It should be noted, for fairness if nothing else, that Freeze denied those rumors and there was no corroborated proof.

However, Oxford is a small town. People talk. Those rumors never would go away. Let's keep this real. Ole Miss had reason to worry. So it dug into his phone records over the years and found a pattern of behavior significant enough to lead to Thursday's resignation.

One of my brothers (who really isnt much of a sports fan at all)  and i were talking after Petrino got in trouble with the blonde.  And, we kind of started about it again after Freeze resigned over calling hooka's.   And , my brother was like, ya know.  back in roman times after a hard fought battle and victory, the romans would have basically big orgies for the conquering hero whenever they returned back to the cities.  And he kind of likened it to these coaches who get in trouble.  How the stress of everything got to them, how they basically had mini-wars every saturday and they had to win them or they'd be fired.   they had to get every top recruit they could or they'd be fired because their team sucked... they had to do this or that as best as they could or they'd be fired.  they'd never fully satisfy everyone.  just constant stress and worry filled with really, little pleasure if you want to get down to it.  except for the money they get paid to coach players who , if they do get the top talent are usually prima donna's.  so then you gotta deal with the drama that they bring and the parents who dont think that their child is playing enough. or the player who doesnt think he is playing enough.. etc..etc..Funny how the lures of a woman have ruined many a man since Samson and Delilah.

anyways... i kind of just smiled and said.    Yep.   haha...

Basketball is back, baseball always, football was a dumpster fire once again..... but as the phoenix rose from the ashes, BMF Petrino has risen again!!! Lots to look forward to.  <br /><br />As the rain falls, I realize, that some where out there, some one, is wearing a mask while they shower............

QuoteGeoff Calkins: And so the rise and fall is complete.

The rise from a high school volleyball coach at Briarcrest Christian School.

The rise to jobs as the head football coach at Lambuth and Arkansas State and finally Ole Miss.

The rise to wins over Alabama, to a contract worth more than $4 million annually, to a pulpit — for Hugh Freeze, it really was a pulpit —

It was a preposterous, glorious story. With a preposterous, inglorious end.

Thursday evening, Ole Miss chancellor Jeffrey Vitter and Ole Miss athletics director Ross Bjork walked into a press conference and announced that Freeze had resigned because of — in Vitter's words — "a pattern of personal conduct inconsistent with the standard of expectations for the leader of our football team."

The man had been caught calling an escort service. That had triggered an investigation into other phone calls.

While neither Vitter or Bjork would reveal precisely what that investigation turned up, when a reporter asked if it involved additional phone calls to escorts, Bjork said simply, "I think we need to protect that information."

It was enough to cause Freeze to admit his transgressions. It was enough to persuade Vitter and Bjork that it was finally time to stop covering for their coach. And it was enough to cause that coach to walk away from a contract worth more than $20 million.

"No buyout, no settlement," said Bjork.

Yes, the rise and fall was complete.

And the cause was hubris, and also vengeance, and also sex.

QuoteFreeze told Yahoo last Friday that the call had been brought to Ole Miss administrators' attention by former coach Houston Nutt's attorney, Thomas Mars, and that they had questioned him about it. Freeze told Yahoo he had no idea why the call was on his phone records.

"I've got no idea, to be honest," Freeze said. "I was in an 813 area code and that was a 313 number, I think that might have been a misdial. I don't think there was even a conversation. There's nothing to it."

Yahoo Sports obtained Freeze's phone records from Mars, whose client is suing Ole Miss for breach of contract. The call lasted only one minute, raising the possibility that it was a wrong number.

Freeze said he had the opportunity to redact numbers from his phone logs after a freedom of information request was made by Mars for his cell record. He said if there were anything nefarious about the call, he would have redacted it.

"If I was trying to hide something, I would have," Freeze said. "That call shows up nowhere else on my records. There is no story to that one."

Bjork told Yahoo on Friday that after receiving the information from Mars, the school had pulled records of Freeze's cell calls and plowed through 39,000 calls without finding another instance of a call to the 313 number. However, the school kept digging through the records and must have found additional troubling information.

Ole Miss already is embroiled in a serious and lengthy NCAA investigation. The school had been standing staunchly behind Freeze, despite his being charged with multiple violations.

"It's a sad day," Bjork said...

QuoteRebels have been building a case for defending Freeze for the allegations of the now-former head coach committing recruiting violations. And even though Freeze is no longer with the program, his former team can't backtrack now.

Ole Miss' best chance in its hearing is to use the same defense it had when responding to the NCAA's second notice of allegations.

Ole Miss can't just blame the whole scandal on Freeze, which would be an easier out now that he is no longer with the program. That would not look favorable for the program in front of the committee, although he mentions that the Rebels should be able to change the language they use to shift the case in their favor.

SI's Andy Staples: "If committee members view Freeze as the driving force behind the violations and subconsciously view Freeze and Ole Miss as separate entities, it's possible they hit Freeze with a harsh penalty and the school with a lighter one."

More from Sam Cooper and Nick Bromberg and some of those top 10 moments — good, bad, ugly and weird —

Quote8. Freeze's mock funeral

Freeze had a, let's say unique, way of trying to motivate his team for the 2016 season. He created what he said was a "funeral scene" for himself, and showed it to the team.

[To be fair, Freeze did not come up with this. "Beginning with the End in Mine" and what you want people to say about you at your funeral is a part of Covey's "7 Habits of Highly Effective People"]

Then there's this:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

7. Comparing an NCAA investigation to Jesus Christ

6. Laremy Tunsil's gas mask

The beginning of the end. THE BEGINNING OF THE END@!

5. Houston Nutt's lawsuit

You can make a significant case that Nutt's suit against Ole Miss and its now former coach could go No. 1. Because, after all, this is what led to Freeze's resignation from Ole Miss on Thursday.

4. Victories over Alabama

3. Tweets about NCAA violations

In 2013, Freeze tweeted "If you have facts about a violation, email compliance@olemiss.edu. If not, please don't slander the young men."

Welp.

That tweet is funny from a college football coach, no matter who the coach is. That the coach was Freeze makes it even more hilarious four years later.

[I read and reposted this seconds after it came out that Sunday morning b/4 it was deleted.]

2. Ole Miss' defense of Freeze amidst NCAA allegations

[Tammy Wynette was also from Mississippi,]

1. Freeze's resignation

Ultimately, the NCAA investigation into Freeze's football program and any potential sanctions from it wasn't what took down the coach.

After lawyers for Nutt found that Freeze had dialed a number connected to an escort service in 2016, Freeze resigned from the school Thursday after Ole Miss said it found a "pattern of conduct" from its now-former head coach.

Wednesday night, Ole Miss administrators met with Freeze about the unspecified pattern.

"Coach Freeze was very transparent, open, honest and admitted the conduct," Ole Miss AD Ross Bjork said Thursday at a press conference discussing Freeze's resignation.

During his media day filibuster (No. 9), Freeze discussed how he was trying to be the best husband and father he could be for his family and the best mentor he could be for the players in his program. It was a reference that, at the time, clearly referred to the issues surrounding the NCAA investigation at the school.

Now, it's tough to look back at Freeze's transcript and his remarks about "adversity" solely in the prism of the NCAA investigation. He told Yahoo Sports' Pat Forde on Wednesday that the call to the escort service was a misdial.

"I've got no idea, to be honest," Freeze told Yahoo. "I was in an 813 area code and that was a 313 number, I think that might have been a misdial. I don't think there was even a conversation. There's nothing to it."

Number Ten: It was a different time. It was a better time.

SI Weighs in on How Hugh Freeze's Scandal Changes Ole Miss's NCAA Case—

with video

QuoteIt wasn't shocking that Hugh Freeze got pushed out at Ole Miss last week. It was shocking why Freeze got pushed out last week. Had someone predicted on July 1 that Freeze wouldn't last the month, that outcome would have seemed entirely plausible. But we would have expected the reason to be the NCAA investigation into the Rebels' recruiting tactics—not a "pattern of personal conduct" that was discovered after the attorney for former Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt alerted Ole Miss officials to a call to a Florida-based escort service in Freeze's phone records.

Things got very weird last week, and now it's time to gather all the disparate strings in an attempt to figure out what happens next for everyone involved in this soap opera. We'll start with the Rebels and the NCAA...

Rebels have spent months building a defense around a man they no longer have to defend. The question now is whether this hurts or helps Ole Miss going forward. A former member of the NCAA's Committee on Infractions (who asked to remain anonymous) told SI.com that the Rebels' best bet is to use the same defense they spelled out in their response to the NCAA's second notice of allegations. That means Ole Miss will have to defend Freeze's efforts at maintaining rules compliance in spite of the fact that Freeze resigned before athletic director Ross Bjork could fire him. The Rebels can't now suddenly heap everything on Freeze and say "he did it" because he doesn't work there anymore. (Besides, Ole Miss has already chosen its scapegoat in the form of former high school relations director Barney Farrar.) Any change in tack now probably would not be viewed favorably by the committee, but the former committee member said the attorneys for Ole Miss can adjust the language they use to attempt to tilt this turn of events in the Rebels' favor.

The former committee member said the attorneys representing Ole Miss should repeatedly hit upon the fact that Freeze is no longer employed there while avoiding the reason why Freeze isn't employed there anymore...
