All rankings are composite (average of all the recruiting services) as calculated by 247Sports.

Houston Nutt (data inconsistent prior to 2002)

2003: 42
2004: 24
2005: 28
2006: 25
2007: 38
Average: 30

Bobby Petrino

2008: 27
2009: 21
2010: 41
2011: 21
2012: 28
Average: 28

Bret Bielema

2013: 23
2014: 29
2015: 23
2016: 25
Average: 25

Pig in the Pokey

so far B has been more consistent. He just needs a couple of the high rated classes to go with that. If we had snagged just 2 of the last 6 we missed out on this year, he woulda got his 1st Top 20.

Good work.  One question:  Does Petrino get credited for the 2007 class?  If not, here would be the adjusted totals:

2004: 24
2005: 28
2006: 25
2007: 38

Average: 30

Petrino

2008: 27
2009: 21
2010: 41
2011: 21
2012: 28

Average: 27

Bielema

2013: 23
2014: 29
2015: 23
2016: 25

No, he hadn't been hired when the '07 class signed.

Better than screwing the data....

Difference is, with some of these 3 stars we are signing they have offers from P5 teams where as with Nutt and BP were beating out directional schools for 3 stars.

Thanks guys! I fixed the OP. Totally gapped it on that one.

No doubt we've improved our recruiting, our player average, and class overall, but so has our competitors. We'll always be a school that probably gets more out of our guys, than their averages, but we need to keep increasing their averages, and our wins/season average.

Agree. Need to keep getting kids with multiple SEC offers by winning head-to-head recruiting battles with our competition. Made a few strides in that department this year but still have work to do.

Just a word of caution here, but I question the authenticity of archival rankings on recruiting services, because they often look piecemeal and you'll find lot's of hokey pokey if you studying them closely.  247 hasn't been around long enough to have many archives of their own and rivals used to wipe everything off their site and start over fresh every year.

Consistency is where CBB has done what noone before him has accomplished. Talent level is about where U of A has been for decades.

I agree that Bielema is the most consistent. The bottom of his classes are also the most deep with fewer reaches. Now, he needs to pull a few more stars at the top and we will be challenging year in and year out.

hobhog

Averaging top 25 class is impressive considering where coach B started and what we have accomplished he last 5-6 years....

Bubba's Bruisers

I think it's obvious our recruiting is steadily improving.  The classes seem to be more consistent and more complete throughout all positions each year.  I believe we can improve to averaging closer to 20 over time, which would be fantastic for our program.  If that happens, we'll be a very good program.

We aren't a program rich in FB tradition nor is our campus near high concentrations of HS talent.  Our ship will turn slowly.

The ppl that started Rivals started 247 after they sold Rivals to Yahoo. I'm sure they have some kind of historical data.

Yes, I remember.

I'm just not sure they've maintained that historical data very well, because I've seen a lot of inconsistencies over the years.  This has been ongoing with rivals since before 247 started and it's continued with 247.  I can't give you a specific example, but I remember once seeing a team with something like 10 4* players in their class, but they weren't even ranked in the top-30 or so.  I only remember that it was a big school and I doubt they were really ranked so low in the final rankings for that year.

I've seen a lot of inconsistencies like that over the years and I could probably find more if I looked for some right now.  I think they usually get fixed later, but then I'll notice new ones all the time.

This is actually more important than any differences in average class rank. Retention is way up with CBB. Please somebody run the numbers on this. Retention is why we can keep up on the field with Auburn, etc. Just look at A$M losing not one but two five star QBs and nobody goes back and revises their recruiting rankings.

I think CBB has had 6 leave in 3 years. BP had like 6 in the 2010 class alone.
