Sophomore guard Terrence Samuel will transfer from UConn at the end of the current semester, the school announced on Thursday.

The 6-foot-4 Samuel, who asked for and was granted his release, averaged 3.6 points, 2.5 rebounds, and 1.6 assists last season.

3. Johnathan Williams III, Missouri -- The Memphis native led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding this past season. There are restrictions on his release: He can't go to an SEC or Big 12 school and can't transfer to Illinois or Arizona.

COLLEGE STATION – One of the "name" members of Texas A&M basketball is leaving the program. Avery Johnson Jr., son of the noted former San Antonio Spur and NBA head coach, announced via Twitter that he is transferring from the Aggies.

His destination is Alabama, first reported by AL.com, where his father recently accepted the head coaching gig following the firing of Anthony Grant. Johnson Jr. played in only 13 games this past season as a true freshman for the 21-12 Aggies, and he will redshirt next season at Alabama after sitting out under NCAA transfer rules.

The younger Johnson was not a highly sought recruit a year ago, but as a former Plano West and AAU player in the Metroplex did help with the recruitment of the Aggies' touted 2015 class, which features four standout players from the Dallas area and arrives to A&M this summer.

Johnson Jr. posted to his Twitter on Friday afternoon: "First off, I just want to say (thanks) to Coach (Billy) Kennedy & his staff for offering me a scholarship and giving me a great opportunity to play here."

The Dothan native announced his intentions to transfer to the Birmingham-based college Sunday on Twitter. He left the Tigers in late April.

From last season:

Last week, shortly after Tennessee hired a new men's basketball coach (Donnie Tyndall), the players who signed a Letter of Intent to play for the old coach (Cuonzo Martin) decided they wanted out of the contract they inked in November of 2013.

They filed the necessary form. Tyndall and UT — unlike other coaches and schools that have become lightning rods for denying such requests — responded promptly. They granted the releases, which dissolved the players' ties to UT and allowed them to re-open their recruitment.

But while the departing signees can now play for Martin at California, or anywhere else, you probably won't see them in the SEC.

Why?

While a school can place restrictions on transfers, it can't do the same with signees, who have never enrolled.

SEC Bylaw 15.01.2.

A student athlete who has signed an SEC Financial Aid Agreement with a member institution and is eligible to receive the athletic scholarship on the institution's first day of classes of the academic year specified on the financial aid agreement, but who does not enter that institution or who does enter and withdraws from that institution before fully completing his/her first semester or quarter (except when the recipient of an athletic scholarship award enters military service before enrolling in the awarding institution and remains in military service for a period of eighteen months or more), shall not be eligible to receive an athletics grant-in-aid during the student-athlete's first two years in residence at the second SEC institution.

It doesn't specifically mention National Letter of Intent. It doesn't need to. This quote from Greg Sankey, the Executive Associate Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer of the SEC, sums it up. (Thanks to Jayson Judson, @CaptainJJudson, for the find.) Asked to explain what "signing an NLI" really means in the SEC, Sankey said:

"In the SEC they are actually signing a couple of documents. One is the actual National Letter of Intent (NLI) and the second is an SEC financial aid agreement. The first document, the NLI, sets out the dynamics of their signing, the end of their recruitment and their commitment to a particular institution and a sport. The financial aid agreement will set forth the athletic scholarship they will receive upon enrollment at the institution. Sometimes there is an institutional document as well explaining policies and procedures."

So, by signing the the SEC financial aid agreement that accompanied their NLI, UT's former signees agreed to go without a scholarship for two years if they backed out and went to another SEC school. And no one is going to do that, right?

Auburn is losing the last recruit of the Tony Barbee error as freshman forward Jack Purchase, a native of Australia, will transfer.

6-foot-8 Purchase didn't make much of an impact during his only season as a Tiger, as he played 91 total minutes and scored nine points. Purchase shot 21 percent from the field on the season and 13 of his 14 field goal attempts were from 3-point territory. A member of the silver-medal winning U17 Australian FIBA World Championship team, Purchase never found his footing with Auburn and will have a chance to find a better spot to continue his career.

The loss of Purchase now gives Auburn another scholarship to work with in recruiting this summer.

Minnesota finalized its recruiting efforts this offseason with the addition of Texas A&M transfer Davonte Fitzgerald

The 6-foot-7 native of Atlanta will have to sit out the 2015-16 season before he has two more seasons of eligibility left.

With three members of their front court for the 2015-16 season being seniors, Kansas has some room for additional depth. Friday it was reported by the Lawrence Journal-World that the Jayhawks will be hosting a transfer this weekend in the form of former Ole Miss center Dwight Coleby.

Coleby averaged 5.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game as a sophomore in 2014-15, making three starts and playing 16.5 minutes per contest. Coleby would have to sit out the 2015-16 season per NCAA transfer rules, but that wouldn't be an issue for Kansas given the options they'll have in the front court.

Perry Ellis, an early candidate for Big 12 Player of the Year honors (Oklahoma's Buddy Hield, who won it last season, returns as does Iowa State's Georges Niang), will be a senior as will Jamari Traylor and Hunter Mickelson.

Tennessee is losing a backup point guard option as walk-on redshirt freshman Braxton Bonds will transfer

The Volunteers self-reported a secondary violation last week after it had been reported by WBIR that Bonds was called twice by Tyndall's Tennessee staff. With Bonds already enrolled with Liberty, Tennessee didn't have permission to contact Bonds from Liberty.

Former Cincinnati guard Ge'Lawn Guyn headed to East Tennessee State

Former Georgetown High guard had a gunshot taken at him this week near UC's campus.

Police said that around 1:30 a.m., gunshots were fired near the Shell station near Calhoun and Scioto.

Witnesses said that some of the gunmen were shooting at each other, while others were firing on bystanders. Cincinnati police officers down the street from the station witnessed some of the gunfire.

One of the bystanders was former Bearcat guard Ge'lawn Guyn. His father told WLWT News 5's Kristy Davis that someone fired at his son. He said the shooting was the result of an altercation that happened during the day on Tuesday.

"These same guys, they got into again with him. And there was a guy hiding over here, and they had two police cars over here. And they said 'Shoot him,' and the guy shot at my son 5 times," George Guyn said.

Guyn was detained briefly by police before being released.

Guyn says he still fears for his son's safety. Ge'Lawn is a senior majoring in criminal justice. His father said he will request the university allow him to graduate early, for his safety.
