When we look at how our offense is going to be run, we have to look at a guy like Grinch.  i used to want Chavis to be the guy, but he had a lot of talent and he didnt seem to ever be able to get the lazy loafs out of them either. they were lazy before he got there and lazy during the time he was there.  plus, he's and older dude who may have lost his spark that he had when he was coaching and winning at Tenn back in the day or at lsu even.  seems like his Defense has steadily declined the longer he has been a coach, and he's had nothing but top tier talent to work with.

Grinch, upon further examination, younger dude, who has coached some pretty dang good defenses using lesser talent.  So, that really comes back to good coaching.  Now, we may not have super talent but we have better talent than what he's been working with, so i think he'd have even better defenses once he got here.  Now again, he'd be playing tougher teams who have the best talent in the nation, but, i believe that we are going to be getting better and better talent!  He has his defenses tuned to style of offense that they used.  so that's good.  they dont use bigger hole pluggers except when they play teams like bama.  they go for more of a streamlined faster , more 'in shape' kind of DT.  the 270 -275lb range that can run all day and not get winded.  but, theyll also keep a couple of those 300lb'er hole pluggers for the bama'esque type teams.  which, he also seems to be a good recruiter as well.  he has ties here.  i believe i read where he coached at mizz for a while.  has texas ties,  and yes, i liked the idea of after a 3 and out, and the Hogs with a big lead the " mr. grinch song " playing..  that'd be pretty funny.   haha..   so yeah, my vote is switched to Mr. Grinch for DC.    unless we could get BV.  haha

Think about this for a minute.  We just hired a coach who's similar to Malzahn offensively and was the OC at Clemson.  With Malzahn calling plays on offense, Auburn has played in 2 national title games.  They made those games in spite of their defense, which ranked 66th for one and 89th for the other.  Chizik was the head coach for one of those games and some want Chizik to be our next DC.  In fairness to Chizik, it's difficult to field a great defense with a hurry-up offense like Malzahn's.

I'm only aware of 2 DC's who have fielded great defenses with a hurry-up offense.  One is Brent Venables.  The other is Alex Grinch.  I'm sure there are others that I don't know about, but it's still quite uncommon to see a great defense with a hurry-up offense.  The result is what Clemson has accomplished.  Who doesn't want that result at Arkansas, too?

I realize many of you know this already, but it's obvious that some do not.

Venables is my top choice, but Grinch has been number 2 for a while. I'm convinced we're not going to grind teams down with the talent available to us, we're going to have to force them into mistakes with an attacking D.

We are not going to get Venables. Grinch would be a homerun, we should make this happen.

I totally agree.  Venables has more experience and is my #1 pick also, but I think we're just lucky to have an opportunity at the Grinch.

Grinch would be a grand slam.  Venables would be a walk off grand slam in the bottom of the 9th.

Grinch was a very well regarded recruiter while at Mizzou.  If he can recruit to Mizzou and Washington, he can recruit to Arkansas.

Grinch plus Morris would be a very good combo imo.  Unless he has a guarantee from Venables he needs to make this happen yesterday.

Honestly, we don't know that.  We suspect it but the players on hand have suffered from very questionable coaching and schemes

We do know that.

Please post the legit SEC defensive players that have played in SEC games

The horse has been beaten already, but I'm flabbergasted by our fans' thoughts that Venables would come to the UA UNLESS it would have been for the HC job, and even then, I'm not convinced he would take it.  I think he has his sights set on being the next Kirby Smart and transitioning right into a ready made job at a top 5-10 school.

I guess maybe if Swinney comes by his house every day and kicks his dog or something, but him coming is so far from adding up that I think there was a better chance that Gruden was coming for the HC job.   ???

Grinch looks like he would be a great hire.  Nothing is for certain, he may come here and have a top 10 defense.  However, we may very well see the status quo continue.  I hope and pray whomever is hired at DC can do amazing things with the talent we have/recruit.  I'm just ready for this team to win again!

They had one of the best defenses in a league full of high scoring offenses with arguably the worst talent in the conference.  He's done a remarkable job.

I'd be more excited about Grinch than Chavis, and Chavis wouldn't upset me.

In even better news, it sounds like Phil Bennett is just retiring, so hes not in play, hopefully.

Whatever. I would be ok if they lost 14-13  but it was not. 37-3  41-14 etc. Not impressive and not fantastic.

doesn't mean he won't be here but based on prior results, it ain't that much to call "fantastic" and CERTAINLY isn't the best in the country.

This is wild extrapolation from one game.

New DC has work to do
Liddell had offer from bama i believe, Calloway,  just 2 more that i can think of that played.. thenof course Montaric Brown.. cant remember if he played or not...   but yes, still have lots of room for improvement.  need a 2deep that all had sec offers.that would be a dream..   but , thats where ya get a guy like Grinch who can do more with less..  who can make guys that maybe werent all SEC offers INTO guys that play like they were all SEC offers..   thats what we  need.  And, from looking at it.. Grinch might be the guy.

Please post the legit SEC defensive players that have played in SEC games

TIA

De'Jon Harris, 2nd team All-SEC, 2nd or 3rd in tackles in the SEC, Greenlaw, Agim.

Pulley comes back in 2018, All-SEC type potential.

Yes, some have underachieved or had nagging injuries. Bielema hyped Randy Ramsey ever since he arrived.

Last spring you would have thought Michael Taylor was LAWRENCE Taylor to listen to Bert. Did Taylor even play this year?

So tired of watching Liddell get burned, Calloway and Brown are  up and comers

Liddell can transfer to UCA
Like i told my friend..  i think we would have had a better record had we just stayed in the 4-3 defense.  i think Bielema would have still had his job. maybe.  but then again, he still Kurt Anderson ruining our OLine so, probably not.  But, this season was not the season to switch to the 4-3.  Next season would have been the season to have done it for Bielema.    But, when he switched, instead of having a few holes to fill with players having to learn that spot..  He had a whole defense trying to learn a spot.  It made a lot of them look bad.  So many missed assignments!  it was just a bad idea for them to switch to a 3-4 this season, no matter how much they said it was good.  it just wasnt a good idea.  Like i said, next season would have been the one to have done it on.   but.. thats how it goes..   i think we had bettter talent that what we showed.  we wont know what defense we'll have until the new DC gets here.  But, id guarantee it'll be better than what it was this past season!  And that wont take much!   But, we had talent on this team.  Dont judge them wrongly because they were learning a new scheme.  i never cared much for  the old DC.  As my buddy would tell me, he lost at iowa st, why would we think hed do any better here?   The guy that came in behind him using his players was able to win with them while he couldnt?  So, i think itll be  more of the same now with the next DC.  The new guy will be able to have a good dfense with what we have now.   just have to wait and see who itll be i suppose.

This is going to be an almost complete rebuild.  You've got to be minimum
two deep in this league, and that's really not good enough.  We've got
maybe 8 legit players on D.  I want someone young and energetic that isn't
scared.  PAY HIM the $$$$$$$$$$$$$$.  If you have a Grinch for instance, and
he's making what $600,000, and he fits your mold, don't try and bargain basement
him at $900,000.  Get someone that will sit down for a while and build.  Offer
1.5 with incentives.  The avg salary for DCORD in this league is close to 800K
I think.  If you want to be average pay average.  You'll get what ya get but dont't
pitch a fit.

They are going to dig him up to offer billions and billions to Pete Golding to run their defense?

I think we have more talent than many realize.  Every time we have a coaching change, everyone blames the failures of the ex-coach on a lack of talent, but Bielema didn't recruit poorly and he kept the cabinets well-stocked.  Morris will excel with his type of players, which he'll need to recruit, but he's not inheriting a bare cabinet at Arkansas.

In contrast, I said JLS was inheriting much less than everyone thought, although that's not the biggest reason he struggled and I'm not using that as an excuse for his failures.

If he can beat a loaded USC and create a top 15 Defense with mostly 2 Star recruit's then how can you not be excited.

Exactly. The Pac 12 is not known for great defense in recent times, but the offenses out there are legit, lots of talent and spread offenses, several excellent QBs.

Grinch had to deal with all that with lesser talent and Leach throwing 50 or more times a game with little running the ball at all.

Truth be told, many of the fans complaining about not being impressed by Grinch couldn’t name five current defensive coordinators if you stuck a gun to their head.

Yes and footballscoop is reporting that 'Bama is hiring Pete Golding to be co-DC.

Saban hires him and the HV experts proclaim him a genius for seeing the potential in a guy from UTSA and hiring him.

If our coach hired him he's a liar for saying he was going to bring in the best DC in the country and they'll say "he gives us %$!@*& Pete Golding!!!???"

I am pretty sure most just log in to complain.  There are several DCs out there that could be considered "top" and we would be lucky to get any of them.  I cannot remember the last time we got a highly sought after and accomplished DC.

And he wears a visor like Coach Morris. It's meant to be.

This is the best hire Arkansas. Should move on him now!

Yes and footballscoop is reporting that 'Bama is hiring Pete Golding to be co-DC.

Saban hires him and the HV experts proclaim him a genius for seeing the potential in a guy from UTSA and hiring him.

If our coach hired him he's a liar for saying he was going to bring in the best DC in the country and they'll say "he gives us %$!@*& Pete Golding!!!???"
nailed it.

Grinch is a beast, and a perfect fit.

We are not going to get Venables. Grinch would be a homerun, we should make this happen.

If he can beat a loaded USC and create a top 15 Defense with mostly 2 Star recruit's then how can you not be excited.

This guy is the best DC in the country? If Chad says so I guess...

The best DC on the Country CAN mean
"The Best one we can get/ The best fit for what AR needs to win with the Talent we have access to.

  • Love God. Love Others. It's that simple.

In at least 2 of WSU's losses, the offense turned the ball over like 400 times, or so it seemed, and could do little to nothing on offense, which is Leach's system meant 3 and out while only taking 23 seconds off the clock.

Yea, but all I look at is the final score!!!!!

Grinch will come if we can get 25 separate threads on MMQB all quoting the same thing.

Let's do it.  You lead us.

As far as our defensive players are concerned, NO ONE, not even Bama, has a full roster of All-SEC players. I get so tired of ignorant people dumping on our players!
We have SEVERAL kids that are top level SEC players, lots of kids that are at the very least average SEC players and a couple of possible SEC stars. If you cannot see that on your own I, nor anyone else can help you. So carry on with your crying.

I am pretty sure most just log in to complain.  There are several DCs out there that could be considered "top" and we would be lucky to get any of them.  I cannot remember the last time we got a highly sought after and accomplished DC.

Totally agree.  I am glad we are willing to pay what it takes go go get a highly sought after up and coming DC.  Let's seal the deal now.

I will hand it to Paul Rhodes on this, he recruited to the position he coached pretty well.  We have some really good players in the secondary.  The Grinch will appreciate that, he has to instill them with the meaness and nastiness that the Grinch does so well. ;D
