Somebody explain to me why a federal judge can overturn NFL's punishment of Tom Brady?

Tyro3

Because he was asked to decide the case, pretty simple.

That's the way the law works. NFL can appeal, and look even dumber when it gets thrown out.

The judge didn't overturn the suspension. The judge ruled that under the collective bargaining agreement, the NFL did not have the authority to issue the suspension in this case, which is, indeed, a legal matter.

Ironically, the ruling is essentially that the NFL is who overstepped their authority.

"Judge Richard M. Berman of Federal District Court in Manhattan did not rule on whether Brady tampered with the footballs in a bid for competitive advantage. Instead, he focused on the narrower question of whether the collective bargaining agreement between the N.F.L. and the players union gave Goodell the authority to carry out the suspension. Judge Berman ruled that it did not."

You have to start wondering how much longer Roger will last as the commish.........................
If I'm going to cheer players and coaches in victory, I damn sure ought to be man enough to stand with them in defeat.

I don't care one way or the other if he plays but I do think the courts should stay out of league business.

If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

The league filed the suit in Manhattan specifically because they felt that court would be a rubber stamp to their own ruling. It backfired in a big way.

The league, Roger Goodell, are the ones who brought it to the court.

Roger isnt in any trouble.  All of this news is great for the league.  NFL is a money making making machine.  Next Thursday's game will most likely be the most watched regular season game in sports history

Yeah, it doesn't look like he'll be there much longer.  Roger has done things more like a King than a commissioner.

Maybe the league should start honoring its contracts, if it wants to avoid court.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

By Goodell and the league, in fact.

Ironically for him, probably the best thing he could have done in this deal.
