Here Tennessee was on the verge of spoiling its upset of No. 19 Arkansas because it couldn't make free throws, and there went Razorbacks guard Anton Beard, to the free-throw line for three freebies with 5.1 seconds left that could tie the game.

Beard, a freshman who has made 61.5 percent of his free throws this season, missed all three. Junior forward Armani Moore grabbed a crucial rebound, got fouled and made his only successful free throws of the game to secure UT's wild, white-knuckle 74-69 win Tuesday night at Thompson-Boiling Arena.

First-year Vols coach Donnie Tyndall said he was confident his team would bounce back from last Saturday's bad loss to Alabama.

Boy, did it ever.

An announced crowd of 13,366 watched the Vols turn a 33-31 halftime lead into a 16-point advantage with 10:01 to play, then withstand a furious Razorbacks comeback that cut the deficit as close as 70-69 with 15 seconds left.

"Our kids really competed," Tyndall said. "Our crowd was amazing. Once again we don't win that game if the crowd isn't into it, and they were. I am proud of the way we bounced back."

The Southern Miss men's basketball team will not participate in postseason play this season, the university announced Tuesday evening.

The university made the decision to self-impose the ban, which includes the Conference USA tournament, as a result of an ongoing university and NCAA investigation into potential wrongdoings during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons.

Tennessee head coach Donnie Tyndall was the Golden Eagle head coach for those two seasons — his only seasons in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss acknowledged an ongoing investigation last fall, and in an interview with the Hattiesburg American late Tuesday, athletic director Bill McGillis said the inquiry remains active.

"Based on the information gathered to date, this was the appropriate action," McGillis said. "The review is ongoing. But based on the information we have today, it was a step we needed to take."

The investigation reportedly centers around improper benefits afforded to student-athletes recruited by Tyndall at Southern Miss who were ineligible to receive such benefits.

Neither Southern Miss officials nor Tyndall has commented on any specifics regarding the investigation, and in McGillis' email to Golden Eagle supporters, that will continue to be the case.

"(The review) is not complete," McGillis wrote in an email to university supporters. "While frustrating at times, in order to maintain the integrity of our joint process, and pursuant to NCAA policy, we are not able to comment regarding specific details of the review at this time."

Donnie Tyndall feared they wouldn't return.

The first-year Tennessee basketball coach unabashedly beat the bushes before the Alabama game. He turned to Twitter, his direct line to more than 40,000 fans, and issued a challenge to pack Thompson-Boling Arena with 20,000 for a Jan. 10 meeting with the Crimson Tide.

Examples from his account included:

"We need you there!"

"Be loud!"

"Let's have it rockin' in there!"

Twenty-thousand didn't happen. But a season-best announced crowd of 16,695 showed. It had thinned considerably by the time the Vols sputtered their way to a 56-38 loss.

The Vols have averaged a crowd of 13,940 through nine home games, down 1,136 from this point last season and down 1,535 from last season overall. Only the Alabama loss reached the 15,000 attendance mark. Last season, five of the first nine home games drew 15,000 or better.

But a peek at the SEC shows the Vols trail only No. 1 Kentucky (23,286) and Arkansas (15,189) in home attendance this season. South Carolina (10,797), Florida (10,458) and Alabama (10,350) are the only other teams in the league that average more than 10,000.

"I'd like to think we're confident, having won some games on the road," first-year Tennessee coach Donnie Tyndall said Monday. "I was asking our staff, the last couple of games -- two of the three at least -- we've almost played a little bit more nervous in front of our home crowd than we have on the road.

"I don't know if that's purely coincidental, or guys do feel a little more pressure at home because all the fans are here and they want to do so well to keep them coming out, if you will, that maybe they put too much pressure on ourselves.

"Really only one of the last three home games have we played the way we went on the road and played, so I hope that trend continues, at least up until Tuesday night."

With wins at Mississippi State, Missouri and South Carolina -- teams with a combined SEC record of 4-14 -- the Vols notched victories in their first three SEC road games for the first time since 2009...

Tyndall is expecting a "crazy atmosphere" tonight at Bud Walton Arena, where the Razorbacks are 12-1 this season and 62-7 in four seasons under coach Mike Anderson.

A former assistant coach at LSU, Tyndall said Arkansas and Arizona are the two loudest places he's played as a coach.

"What is it, that 'Woo Pig Sooie' deal?" he wondered aloud. "They get a little crazy in there. It's just they love basketball. Going back to Coach (Nolan) Richardson's days, they've had good teams, great players and their home crowd has always been very, very good for them."
