Hello Razorbacks.  I don't think I'm breaking any of the rules over here, and I wanted to let you guys know about a film project a guy in Oklahoma has started working on.

Eddie Sutton is by any standard, a great basketball coach. As an OSU fan, my opinion is he might have singlehandedly saved Oklahoma State from falling to a place like Conference USA. I know he didn't leave Arkansas on the greatest of terms, but he elevated Arkansas basketball. OSU people think he deserves a spot in the Naismith Hall of Fame.  Perhaps there are some Razorback fans who feel the same?

This film will document his history at Arkansas, Kentucky, and OSU. I have met and talked to the director, a guy named Christopher Hunt (www.1577productions.com), and he is talking to the right people about the film possibly becoming a 30-for-30 episode on ESPN. He released the trailer last Friday:

[vimeo]https://vimeo.com/208566365[/vimeo]

Anyway, the film is being crowd-funded, and I'm hopeful that there are some Arkansas folks who remember the Triplets and the Final Four, and would like to see this project get done before we lose Eddie. If you are one of those, please visit the IndieGoGo site and consider making a donation to help fund the film.

Thanks for reading.

No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

Coach Sutton was the architect of modern-day basketball at ARK. When the Hogs played at home during the mid-70s to mid-80s, it was not a game but an event. Great times, great memories. I hope the documentary gets made.

You could have an animated intermission showing a cartoon Sutton crawling to Kentucky...

That would be good.

Sutton was good for the program as was Richardson. If you can't see that you aren't a Hog fan, you are a coach fan.  Yes Sutton had some personal demons that led to the rift with Broyles. He made those comments to get at Broyles. He later said he regretted it, that he loved Arkansas.

Some people never move on.

Ah, the 70's and 80's were great times for Arkansas basketball. A lot of great memories. Sutton was definitely good for the program.

Some people want to gloss over the fact that Sutton left a team full of dope addicts in his wake and employed an assistant coach who was caught slinging dope.

Things were falling apart here and had Eddie stayed he was going to reap the rewards.

Yes, he did great things for our program, but in truth we were probably lucky he left when he did.

Some people forgive a traitorous drunk anything,  just because they have a fond memory of peaking at finishing 3rd, and underachieving after the arrival of Houston in the conference.

Screw Eddie.   I don't want him near our program, and will boo him at every available opportunity;  he is bad for Arkansas basketball.

Proof! It's amazing some people don't know how easy it is to look up numbers.

Reminds us again of what those tournament numbers looked like, especially on the back end when Eddie was supposed to be the great program builder at Arkansas?

We didn't even sniff a Final Four after the Triplets-- we managed only 2 more Sweet 16s under Eddie;  Houston had as many National Runner Up finishes, and more Final Four appearances than we did Sweet 16s.

Only from you and a few others.
From anyone who cares about Arkansas basketball.

The man is a borderline criminal alcoholic, who managed to nearly kill someone at OSU,  leave drug scandals in his wake, and cheating scandals as well.

The guy is a walking advertisement of what was wrong with  'Eh, we can tolerate his behavior,  as long as he wins enough'.

I will contribute to this.  Eddie Sutton took chicken feathers and made lovely chicken soup for us here at Arkansas.  He had his problems and left for Ky.  Do you know anyone who would not leave Arkansas for Ky, mad or not?  The only thing that makes the negative posts OK are that everyone is entitled to their opinion.  Eddie Sutton was at least the second best coach to ever coach BB at Arkansas.  Maybe the first best but Nolan won it all.  Gotta go with the facts.

That may well be because, after he left, we got Richardson.  Regardless, without any doubt, Eddie  was a great coach.  I would put Eddie equal to Richardson.  However, at that time, Richardson was the better recruiter; him being  the first and, for a while, only head black coach in the south.

Both Eddie and Richardson should be Hall of Fame coaches.

Nobody cares more than me about Arkansas Basketball. I assure you that you don't. I've had numerous friends play for them and Eddie. I've had acquaintances coach them including Eddie himself. I might be a little biased but so are you in the other direction. I know several players that played for him that would not have come to Arkansas if not for him. Is he perfect no, but neither are you or I.

Tolerating the Eddies is how you get a David Bliss to get to that kind of position that he had at Baylor--  writing off the deep and profound flaws of the borderline criminal, as personal eccentricities.

Screw Eddie.   I just hope he doesn't accidentally kill anyone, or nearly kill again.

Sutton had the Triplets, Darrell Walker, Alvin Robertson and many other great players. Nolan just got a lot more accomplished with his players than Sutton did with his. Only a fool would say otherwise.

Still, Sutton was a good coach though, just not good enough to get into the Naismith HOF according to the people who actually have a vote.

This is the best Eddie Sutton thing out there:

Skit to about 18 seconds.  "But, that really means something to me.  You know they have my name on the... at Oklahoma state where I graduated, but uh they've got the number on the floor but this is much more impressive to have your name on top of the... floor and you can see all the people."

I love it.  He likes the banner more than having his name on the floor because the banner is up high where it can see all the people.

Not too shabby for Sutton.

FIFY and IMO, Sutton deserves recognition for the beginnings of making Arkansas Basketball a national power in the 70's - 80's.   Before Sutton the Hogs were simply an "also ran".   Sutton was the first Arkansas basketball coach to get the Hogs into the NCAA on a consistent basis.   He started a 20+ contiguous year run to the NCAA's and NIT for the Hogs.   Obviously Nolan finished what Eddie began.........   I hope the film gets finished and Eddie is placed in the HOF....

We all have to hope NOBODY including you and I never accidentally kills someone. Good grief man what on earth did the man do to you personally. Interesting that a MOD would be such a negative nanny and always want to highlight someone else's flaws. Maybe you should look on the bright side in this discussion. He hasn't killed anybody and has helped more people than you and I combined I'd bet. My father in law holds no ill will towards the Germans even though their former army is the reason he only has one leg. My brother in law was killed while driving drunk. My mom's best friend was killed by someone else driving drunk. Should we ban all alcohol and all cars. How about my uncle that was shot and killed. Maybe we should ban all guns. Just to let you know the guy that accidentally shot him was devastated. My Mom's family tried to get my Grandpa and Grandma to prosecute him. They refused saying he felt bad enough and guilty already and would have to answer to God. Eddie doesn't have to answer to you or me. There is a difference between someone purposely killing someone else and accidentally doing so.

If this film is supposed to help Eddie get serious consideration for another shot at the HOF, the whitewashing will have to be extensive. Still won't be enough to get him in with the voters with whom that ship has apparently sailed.

His best shot to get in was in this years weak field.

Eddie's accidentally nearly killed one person already.    He's handed programs over to drug addicts, and turned a blind eye to unsavory character at every stop along the way.

The man is not worth any admiration or veneration.   There's a reason he's not in the basketball HOF now, despite it having the broadest acceptance criteria of any sports hall of fame--  and likely won't be until after he dies and the memories of the person he is, fade from view.
