He can't afford to have many misses.
If the South should lose, it means that the history of the heroic struggle will be written by the enemy, that our youth will be trained by Northern school teachers, will be impressed by all of the influences of history and education to regard our gallant dead as traitors and our maimed veterans as fit subjects for derision.

QuoteHunt is a three-star wide receiver prospect from Walnut, Miss. It does not appear as though the Bulldogs will have a chance to re-earn his pledge before Signing Day. Hunt had been committed to Dan Mullen's team since late March of 2016. He also holds offers from Memphis and South Alabama.

QuoteKaleb Oliver, a three-star safety commit for MSU out of Tennessee, re-opened his recruitment — he did not decommit, but will now entertain interest from other schools — and 2018 defensive tackle Emmit Gooden out of Independence Community College in Kansas decommitted. Gooden cited the changes at defensive coordinator over the last few years as a reason why, but did add that MSU remains a top school for him.

Oliver was recruited by Grantham while the latter was at Louisville.

Linebacker will be the key spot to watch for MSU in the remaining weeks before Feb. 1 because that is the position group that is most impacted by the defensive coordinator swap; Grantham, like Sirmon did, is expected to coach linebackers.

Starkville four-star 2017 linebacker Willie Gay remains as the Bulldogs' top priority. Gay received visits from Michigan and MSU on Thursday and said Friday that he stills expects to take an official visit to MSU this weekend.

Gay met Grantham on Thursday and said the in-home visit went well. From the Bulldogs' perspective, it is critical that he takes an official visit, sources said.

He is expected to take an official visit to LSU later this month, and the Tigers, Ole Miss and Michigan are still contenders along with MSU. Gay has repeatedly said it is likely that he will not announce a decision until signing day.

Mohamed Sanogo is another linebacker target to watch for MSU — and Ole Miss, for that matter. Sanogo is a high-end three-star prospect out of Texas who recently decommitted from Houston. He is visiting MSU this weekend where he expects to talk to Grantham for the first time. Ole Miss visited him Thursday and he said it went well

QuoteState did not land any commitments this past weekend.

A major defensive commit met his new position coach and progress was made, sources said, with a premiere in-state target.

Grantham is a savage.

Well, at least that's how linebacker Tyler Dunning out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Florida views MSU's new defensive coordinator, and to be clear, yes, that is a compliment.

MSU's highest rated high school defensive commit's first meeting with Grantham went well. Dunning likes Grantham's background as a developer with a track record for successful defenses.

"I love his mindset," Dunning said. "The defense is going to be lit."

Dunning, who is 6-foot and 230 pounds, committed to MSU in the spring and has a shot to play early on. With Grantham coming in, it remains to be seen what exactly MSU's defense will look like, but Dunning's versatility should allow him opportunities at a couple of spots in what is expected to be a 3-4 with multiple fronts.

Talk around MSU about its chances of landing Morton four-star wide receiver and Dandy Dozen D.D. Bowie went from "No, this likely won't happen," to "Hey, it looks like there is a shot," to "This is a high possibility"...

MSU hosted a pair of offensive linemen targets in Josh Cooper out of Haughton (La.) and Jordan Rhodes from Creekside in Georgia.

After landing New Hope lineman Taekion Reed and Tennessee punter Tucker Day last weekend, and then seeing Callaway defensive end and Dandy Dozen [sic] flip to Louisville later in the week, there were [sic] additions or subtractions this past weekend for MSU... [and you want to be our new beat writer.]

Only MSU commit who has not taken an official to Starkville this month is Montravious Richardson.

QuoteBulldogs landed a commitment from 6-foot-7 offensive lineman Josh Cooper, a native of Haughton.

Cooper's commitment gives the Bulldogs 21 commitments.

Cooper is unranked.

Elliss is a 6-foot-4, 330-pound defensive tackle out of Littleton, Co. He played for powerhouse Valor Christian, which produced Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey

QuoteElliss is the fourth defensive tackle to commit to the Bulldogs and he is also the highest rated. The Colorado native is the No. 343 prospect in the 2017 class and the No. 23 defensive tackle.

State now has the No. 26 class in the 2017 recruiting cycle, which is good for ninth in the SEC. Bulldogs have a total of 22 signees and commits.

QuoteRobbie Blosser is a three-star quarterback from Los Angeles (walk-on, maybe preferred).

Blosser's commitment brings State's 2017 [sic] to 27th in the country, good for ninth in the SEC. He also received some interest from Tennessee and Vanderbilt, though neither offered a scholarship.

QuoteState entered this year's recruiting cycle in position to secure commitments from the top in-state talent and take advantage of rival Ole Miss receiving its amended Notice of Allegations in February after the NCAA investigation.

On Monday night, the Bulldogs took a significant first step...

Tupelo three-star linebacker Jett Johnson, the top-ranked player at his position in Mississippi, announced his verbal commitment to Mississippi State over Ole Miss, among others.

The news is a big deal for Mississippi State for two reasons: 1.) Johnson is one of the best players in Mississippi and 2.) His commitment sets a significant tone for the Bulldogs' ability to secure in-state recruiting wins over the Rebels, considering his ties to both schools.

QuoteThere were mornings several months ago when Cordavien Suggs would wake up with stiff knees. It is difficult, he learned, for a 6-foot-6, 300-pound senior offensive tackle to sleep comfortably while sharing with another person the third row of a gray Yukon truck.

The estimated 15 nights Suggs said he spent sleeping in the truck owned by a close friend's family was part of the sacrifice he made to get to where he wants to be.

At some point later next month shortly after Suggs graduates from Duncan U. Fletcher in Neptune Beach, Florida, on June 2, the Jackson native will report to Mississippi State, the school he signed with in February.

His path to Starkville has never been easy.

QuoteOne of the visitors at Sache's spring football game traveled a couple hundred miles for one specific moment.

Mississippi State assistant Brett Elliott was waiting until the midway point of the scrimmage, when Sachse junior quarterback Jalen Mayden was going to make his verbal commitment.

Elliott didn't leave the school located in the northeast Dallas area disappointed. Mayden, one of the state's top dual-threat quarterbacks, committed to MSU.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott arguably deserves a little bit of credit for the school landing Mayden. One of the fringe benefits of Prescott's blistering rookie year in the NFL is a recruiting bump in Dallas for his alma mater.

Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen said someone like Prescott brings name recognition that doesn't only help the football program --

QuoteWest Point athlete Marcus Murphy separated himself as one of 2018's best by dominating in all areas of the game.

Murphy put up numbers rushing, receiving and passing for the the Green Wave. During his junior season, he finished with nearly 2,000 total yards: 1,756 rushing, 97 passing, 137 receiving and 27 total touchdowns. In his sophomore campaign he had 2,426 total yards: 1,615 rushing, 770 passing, 41 receiving and 18 touchdowns.

In the last two years, he's proven his ability to control the game offensively and clearly show why he is a member of the 2017 Dandy Dozen. He is the fifth player from the West Point program to be named to the Dandy Dozen...

Murphy, a 6-foot-1, 180-pound athlete, is currently ranked as a three-star prospect and the No. 6 overall player in [the state of] Mississippi's 2018 class.

Sources close to the program envision Murphy fitting best at safety.

He is described by high school coaches as the player you game plan for but still can't stop.

Webb became the first junior to ever capture the yearly state honor as Mr. Football after he set a single-season Alabama record for rushing touchdowns (47) and led his team to a state title in 2016. He rushed for 3,242 yards, which ranks second in Alabama history. Webb is rated as the No. 33 running back in our nation.

MSU now has 15 commitments for the 2018 class heading into Big Dawg Camp...
