12 observations from a courtside seat at MO State last night:

1. This was an extremely physical game
2. Saw more elbows thrown than rolls at Sikeston
3. They were allowed to ride us piggy-back bringing the  ball up the court
4. A fore arm push was legal weapon and a necessary thing
5. If you were under the basket you were getting your head beat in
6. If your shirt tail was out it was being held
7. Hogs learned to play by the above rules as the game wore on
8. Bryant was a much needed rebounding machine
9. Hogs shared the rock pretty well
10. I noticed discipline and not panic when we fell behind
11. Rotnei Clark was the man towards the end and in overtime
12. A better crowd saw a pretty good game

Really agree with the comments about how the rough the game was, especially in the first half.  I think it got away from the officials a little bit.

You noticed the refs came out calling a lot of fouls early in the second half to try to regain control.

MS played so rough, it was borderline dirty play, IMO.

There were two calls last night I have questions about.

1. The one on the Mizzou player that was swinging elbows but didn't hit our guy. What was that call?

2. What was the mysterious double technical foul that gave MW is second. they never explained it on TV last night.

He had to have been warned about that earlier in the game.  Otherwise how do you commit a foul without fouling?

That's what I don't get. There was nothing commented on it before hand. I mean, I'm glad they called, because that game was out of control for a while. Not calling that one could have led to something really bad.

seems to me it should have been a technical and not a personal foul. he didn't connect but was swinging them with intent. you could tell he was frustrated that welsh was all over him in one on one defense.

Good find.

Kevin

you have to pivot your feet on the play.  just to take the ball side to side with elbows up is illegal.

That kid was reaching and aiming for Welsh's face with those elbows. It was extremely obvious in person. He wanted a nose as a souvenir. I believe that was the same guy that flopped all over the court every time Welsh tried to bring the ball up.

Yeah, it looked pretty obvious on TV as well. Welsh couldn't get those same calls the other night, but this guy was.

He was like the Bill Lambier of point guards - always playing hard and borderline dirty to the point where you just wanted to smack him

Actually, they did not call a foul on the swinging elbows play. They called a violation. When the ref blew his whistle his hand went up. NO closed fist. He then explained to the Missouri State coach it was a violation. The player was NOT charged with a foul. It would be just like traveling or double dribble.

The foul that was terrible to me was the foul on Mike Wash when Missouri State player ran into him. Mike said somethin to the ref and he called it on Mike. But at first, the ref turned the other way to call the offensive foul on Missouri State.

Good point on the swinging elbows play.

As far as the Washington foul it was definitely a foul on him.  You can't raise your forearm up when you're taking a charge.  Your hands have to be down.

Mike Wash needs to realize his role on this team is to be an inside force on offense and defense and not officiate.  It should have been a flagrant foul or intentional cause Wash was pissing at the ref about a no call then made his point by flooring the guy.  Wash needs to quit the team and get his striped jersey and whistle cause he seems to think that is his role.

The first foul was not called. Mike knows his role. We wouldn't have won without him last night. Although, I'm proud we still fought through and played without him in that OT.

Hard to blame Washington at all for protesting, although it cost. The call was not a good one and the ref did appear to be confused.

Washington gave the guy driving the lane a forearm shiver. It was a foul.

fred ziffel

After he was fouled initially....the game was a rough one. The second foul was called.

He didn't play like he knows his role.  He spent more time complaining at the officials and shooting 3's than he did anything else.  I am glad we won, great game, but Wash was a non factor and it wasn't his back, it was his attitude and effort that made him that way.
I have been a pel fan from the start, and even with the win, seeing them live for the 1st time this year makes me wonder if he can get it done.  I know it took 12-13 years for the program to get here, but after 3 years of Pel I still don't know what he wants his system or style to look like.

All night shooting 3s?  What game were you watching?  He had *1* 3 point attempt on the night.  One.
No cause, ever, in the history of all mankind, has produced more cold-blooded tyrants, more slaughtered innocents, and more orphans than socialism with power. It surpassed, exponentially, all other systems of production in turning out the dead. The bodies are all around us. And here is the problem: No one talks about them. No one honors them. No one does penance for them. No one has committed suicide for having been an apologist for those who did this to them. No one pays for them. No one is hunted down to account for them. It is exactly what Solzhenitsyn foresaw in The Gulag Archipelago: "No, no one would have to answer. No one would be looked into." Until that happens, there is no "after socialism."

didn't bother to check the box score before shooting his mouth off, did he?

nor did he see mike taking the ball to the whole off the dribble multiple times.

One other thing I saw last night at the game that I have not seen so far this year was what appeared to be the fire back in CJP.  He went after the official at half court and then again down the stretch under the hog goal.  I was about 12 rows up and he was not asking the official how his family was.

I told the guy I was with that, I was glad to see the fire again, maybe.... the team is coming together after all the suspensions.

I remember Bobby Knight said that it would take the team awhile to get their game timing down once the suspensions were over and they played together in games.

I know I have seen most all the games and this was by far their best effort against a good team.

Just my opinion.

Im sorry, but Welsh is by far the dirtiest player on our team and an elbow might help cure that. He always finds a way to sneak in a cheap shot or shove after the whistle. His cockiness rubs me the wrong way for some reason.

My bad, 1 3 for mike washington seems like 20.  How many 18 footers?  He drove 4 times in the 2nd half, 2 times out of control, got bailed out by the officials on one and charge on the other.  He was awful.  Didn't matter who came in for him, when he went out we got better.
Speaking of his one 3: Who the heck designs the opening play of the game to be this guy coming off a double screen to shoot the 3?  What a way to start the game.  How bout something at the rim or something to Rotnei to start the game?  First half shoot selection was terrible for the hogs.
