    Sporting News predicts South Carolina will play in the Belk Bowl against Wake Forest in Charlotte on Dec. 29.
    SBNation put the Gamecocks in Nashville to face Indiana in the Music City Bowl on Dec. 30.
    College Football News projects South Carolina will face Wake Forest in the Independence Bowl on Dec. 26 in Shreveport, La.

Sugar Bowl at New Orleans (Jan. 2, 8:30 p.m.) -- SEC will fill one of the spots in the Sugar Bowl either with the SEC champion (if it's not in the College Football Playoff) or another team.

Orange Bowl at Miami (Dec. 30, 8 p.m.) -- SEC is eligible to send a team to the Orange Bowl after it fills its Sugar bowl spot.

Citrus Bowl at Orlando, Fla. (Dec. 31, 11 a.m.) — Citrus Bowl has first choice of SEC teams after any College Football Playoff, Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl teams are chosen.

State endured its seventh loss last week with a 58-42 loss to Arkansas. Most seasons a seventh loss eliminates teams from postseason eligibility.

But this year, it's possible at least one 5-7 team could make a bowl because there aren't enough six-win teams to fill all 40 bowls. Three teams with 5-7 records made a bowl last year.

When teams with 5-7 records fill open bowl spots, they are selected in order of APR.

Here's a list of the teams that could finish the season with a 5-7 record that also own better APRs than Mississippi State:

Navy won't close its regular season until Dec. 10 when it has its annual tilt against Army.

Navy and Western Michigan are currently in a fight for the Group of 5 automatic bid into a New Year's 6 bowl bid, which is the Cotton Bowl this year.

The shuffling mostly would impact Group of 5 teams, which could be SEC opponents in some bowls, including the Birmingham Bowl.

Bulldogs and Ole Miss are the only SEC team in the 5-7 group of teams, waiting to see how many bowl bids are available.

12. Vanderbilt Commodores

Lost 41-17 to North Carolina State in the Independence Bowl

Making a bowl game for the first time since coach James Franklin left was a tremendous accomplishment. Unfortunately, the Commodores' performance was not.

Quarterback Kyle Shurmur threw three interceptions and the defense allowed 13 or more points in each of the last three quarters. The game was never in doubt, even though N.C. State was, like Vandy, a mediocre team.

1. LSU Tigers

Won 29-9 over No. 13 Louisville in the Citrus Bowl

Picking between the top two teams was difficult, but LSU got the edge thanks to its complete team performance in an upset.

LSU held Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson without a touchdown for the first time as a starter, and to just 3.5 yards per play. Jackson averaged 8.0. Danny Etling and Derrius Guice also ensured that LSU fans know the offense is in good hands headed into the 2017 season.
