Florida (updated)

Steve Spurrier won the Heisman while a UF QB/PK in 1966 only one year after Stokely-Van Camp had begun selling Gatorade. As a head coach, he led the '89 Duke team to their first bowl game since the Blue Devils defeated Lance Alworth and Arkansas in the '61 Cotton Bowl.

Spurrier returned to Florida to replace Waldon-native Gary Darnell. Darnell coached UF for seven games as a mid-season replacement for Galen Hall. His first Gator squad was ineligible for post-season play.

The Head Ball Coach was 87-12 in SEC games for the Gators. Florida was conference champions in '91, '93, '94, '95, '96, and 2000.  The Gators were National Champs in '96.

Spurrier left Florida following the 2001 season. He received a five-year, $25 million contract with the Redskins.

Ron Zook was a DB at Miami (O.), "The Cradle of Coaches". Zook became an assistant for Spurrier in '91 leaving Ohio State and Zook replaced him as Head Coach beginning with the '02 season. Zook's hiring generated a lot of energy among the fan base, not all positive. Three five-loss seasons ended Zook's career at UF.

Zook did not win a home game over a ranked foe and was criticized for puckering up at home. He coached consecutive road wins over LSU, Arkansas, and UGa in '03.

Ron Zook's SEC record was 16-8.  He coached at Illinois until last season.

Batesville-native Charlie Strong coached Florida's Peach Bowl loss after Zook's last season.

Florida hired Utah head coach Urban Meyer who complimented Zook on the players he had left behind. Meyer's Utah team went undefeated winning the Fiesta Bowl over Pitt.

Urban Meyer had a 36-12 SEC record in six seasons at UF. His teams won the BCS-NC in '06 and '08 as well as the SEC-CG both seasons.  Controversy surrounded Meyer's season ends in '09 and '10 regarding whether he would return. Meyer left UF after an 8-5 '10 season to spend more time with family. He was named Ohio State's coach for the '12 season, one year after Tressel's dismissal. Meyer is the fastest coach to 100 wins since Bud Wilkinson.

In 2008, Tejas hired Will Muschamp away from Auburn to be DC. Following the '08 season, Muschamp was named coach-in-waiting to eventually succeed Mack Brown. He could not wait long enough.

Florida hired Muschamp and he completed his first season in '11. His SEC record in '11 was 3-5 and UF finished 7-6 overall after winning the Gator Bowl. 2012 was a top ten season capped with an appearance in a BCS Bowl, a Sugar Bowl loss. In 2013, UF fell to 4-8 with an FCS loss to Georgia Southern. Muschamp started 2014 on the hot seat and despite a surprise win over Georgia in Jacksonville, a loss to South Carolina including two fourth quarter blocked kicks, led to AD Jeremy Foley announcing he would not coach beyond the end of the regular season. Muschamp's SEC record was 17-15 over four seasons. Failing to get the offense on track despite their wealth of talent proved to be his undoing though he was credited with helping to improve the academic and disciplinary environment. Muschamp was hired by Auburn to be their defensive coordinator in 2015.

Jim McElwain was an assistant coach for 25 years with a notable stop at Bama as OC and QB coach from 2008 to 2011.  He was head coach at Colorado State from '12 to '14 with a 10-2 record in 2014. Florida was able to make arrangements to meet his large buyout and McElwain was named Florida's head coach. He has hired Geoff Collins from Mississippi State as his defensive coordinator.

Spurrier, who will enter his 11th season at South Carolina this year, said Tuesday he feels physically as good as he's felt in years.

Quote"I don't think people talk much about age anymore," the 69-year-old Spurrier said. "Pepper Rodgers once said, 'They don't ever fire a coach because of his age. They fired a coach for losing.' And he's right."

Spurrier spent Monday traveling to visit the players verbally committed to South Carolina and will continue that routine Wednesday and into next week, by which point he expects to have had personal meeting with every player on the Gamecocks' commitment list.

"We need a little bit more togetherness," Spurrier said. "We didn't have enough togetherness on that team last year. I think it was obvious. We had some issues on that team last year."

Asked if those issues were resolved, Spurrier replied, "They are not over until you start playing the real games next year."

Smart and Muschamp played at Georgia. Chavis and Steele played at Tenn. Pruitt and Ward played at Bama, and Odom played at Mizzou.

Butch Jones, #Vols football staff treating Nashville like 'home': (FREE READ) http://bit.ly/16lq3IU

QuoteNASHVILLE, Tenn. — The University of Tennessee's flagship campus and football cathedral are located next to the Great Smoky Mountains on the eastern side of the state.

That didn't prevent Vols football coach Butch Jones from all but propping his feet up on the table and kicking off his shoes in the state's capital city Thursday afternoon.

"It's good to be home in Nashville," Jones said to a loud standing ovation inside the West Club of the Tennessee Titans' LP Field. "It's good to be home."

Home is where the heart is, and the growing metropolitan Nashville area is becoming a vital organ for the Vols — who on Wednesday signed the nation's fourth-ranked class in the 247Sports Team Recruiting Rankings.

"We ventured into 10 states. We went coast to coast," Jones said. "But the most important state is the state of Tennessee, and we were able to keep home base. We got the top three players in our state.

"Everything starts in your own backyard."

And the Vols, for a second consecutive year, guarded their yard...

Tennessee will play Bowling Green in their 2015 season opener in Nashville.

QuoteWhile it's been an offseason for getting paid in the SEC, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen still doesn't have a contract extension to speak of. Well, not yet, anyway. Athletic director Scott Stricklin sounds pretty confident that a contract extension for the coach who guided the Bulldogs to their first 10-win season since 1999 this past year is coming. It's more of a "when" issue than an "if" issue. That's great news for the program because Mullen has completely changed the culture at Mississippi State. He has 46 wins in six years ...

RT @aldotcom: Former Alabama coach Mike Dubose resigns from high school coaching job http://ow.ly/IY69f

QuoteFormer Alabama coach Mike Dubose is no longer the head football coach at Luverne.

The Crenshaw Board of Education accepted his letter of resignation earlier this week, Superintendent Terry Holley confirmed to AL.com. It's unclear whether Dubose will coach again.

When reached by phone, Dubose said he's not sure what he'll do next. He lives in Opp.

"He's a fine man," Holley said...

Dubose led Luverne to back-to-back playoff berths in 2013 and 2014, including going 11-2 in 2013 and advancing to the Class 2A quarterfinals. He also coached a Luverne in 2003 and 2004, a stint that included a trip to the 2A state title game.

"Of all the levels I've coached, I've enjoyed high schools the most because it's the purest," Dubose told AL.com in 2013. " Players are playing for the right reasons, for the love of the game."

Today Mark Richt turns 55, and an early birthday present was his boss's announcement on an expensive indoor facility. http://www.macon.com/2015/02/17/3591258/georgia-planning-to-build-expensive.html ...

QuoteSome of the cost for the project will come through fundraising, with the amount to be decided once there is a firm project estimate. McGarity acknowledged that some fundraising already has taken place "quietly."

The estimated size of the facility is "roughly" 80 yards wide, 140 yards long and 65 feet high, according to McGarity. It could include other frills and features that would expand the footprint of the facility.

McGarity said there was plenty of red tape that needs to be cut through before ground can be broken, especially with the site being outside of the athletics department's current land outline. Eventually the Board of Regents, which oversees all public universities in the state, has to approve the project.

"There's just so many approval process that need to be completed," McGarity said. "We're starting that process now."

Dan Mullen tries to get out in front of opposing schools saying he could leave Mississippi State: http://ow.ly/JBkja

QuoteDan Mullen is used to this wrinkle of negative recruiting. He was one of the hottest job candidates in the country this year after guiding Mississippi State to the Orange Bowl. He was the subject of multiple fawning national profiles when Mississippi State rose to No. 1 in the rankings. Mullen was mentioned for the blueblood jobs at Michigan and Florida, just like he'd previously been mentioned for vacant jobs at Penn State and Miami, among others.

He remembers years ago spotting a report saying a deal to poach Mullen out of Starkville was imminent. The only problem was he had never even spoken to that school.

"That's happened so much with me now," Mullen says. "It tends to happen all the time, so it's something we are used to. I'm not really into negative recruiting. Even to say 'Coach Mullen's not going to be there,' how do they know what I'm going to be doing? We talk more about our school."

The Mississippi State head coach says the key is to fight through the misinformation and be as honest as possible with recruits. Mullen, who will be entering his seventh year at MSU next fall, is confident in his abilities, so much so that he tells recruits upfront he's going to be mentioned for other jobs when the coaching carousel starts up.

It's a preemptive move to build up trust and set the narrative before opposing schools bring up coaching rumors. He's essentially disarming the effectiveness of any last-minute tactic to sway a prospect away from MSU before National Signing Day.

"The fact is every year my name seems to come up for jobs, and every year I'm still back here as the head coach," Mullen says...

Mississippi State's Dan Mullen joins SEC's $4 million club with raise, contract extension | http://ow.ly/JHTjJ

QuoteState's Dan Mullen is the latest SEC football coach to join the $4 million salary club, as the school announced a raise and contract extension Thursday night.

Mullen, who led the Bulldogs to a 10-3 record and the school's first-ever No. 1 national ranking this past season, will earn $4 million in 2015 and an average of $4.275 million through 2018. Mullen is 46-31 in six seasons at MSU.

"Dan has done a phenomenal job in leading our football team the past six years, and we're happy to be in a position to reward his efforts while making sure he'll be able to continue building a championship program for Mississippi State," said Mississippi State athletics director Scott Stricklin, who announced Mullen's new contract during an alumni event in Jackson.

Mullen, 42, made around $3 million in 2014. His new contract also adds a fourth year to his current deal, the maximum allowed under state law.

Mullen was named the Maxwell National Collegiate Coach of the Year in 2014. In addition to his success last season, Mullen has coached the Bulldogs to five straight bowl appearances.

"It's a privilege to represent our university, our program and our fans here at Mississippi State," Mullen said. "I appreciate Scott Stricklin and our administration who have given us the tools and resources to be successful and develop Bulldog football into a national brand over the last six years.

"We spent five weeks ranked No. 1 last season for the first time, but we have only scratched this surface on what we can accomplish here. We have created a winning culture both on and off the field and built a program that has sustained success in the nation's toughest conference. I've always said we are going to win a championship here, and I firmly believe that."

Mullen is one of nine SEC coaches who will earn at least $4 million in 2015, joining Alabama's Nick Saban, Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin, LSU's Les Miles, South Carolina's Steve Spurrier, Ole Miss' Hugh Freeze, Auburn's Gus Malzahn, Arkansas' Bret Bielema and Georgia's Mark Richt.

There were 11 college football coaches that made at least $4 million annually in 2014.

The SEC alone is approaching that number in 2015 after recent raises throughout the conference, including Georgia's Mark Richt.

Former University of Louisville head football coach Ron Cooper, who last oversaw defensive backs at South Florida, has accepted the role of defensive secondary coach and assistant head coach at Florida International.

QuoteFormer Western Kentucky coach Willie Taggart -- now at USF -- ousted Cooper along with both his coordinators after the Bulls went 4-8 in 2014. USF rated 106th in pass efficiency defense and 71st in total defense while giving up 402.8 yards per game a season after finishing 30th in that category.

Cooper, who at age 53 has 30 years of coaching experience, followed Howard Schnellenberger at U of L from 1995-1997. He's since served as head coach at Alabama A&M and went on to hold coordinator/assistant roles at a number of Southeastern Conference schools, along with his NFL experience.

Brandon Burrows had already met with Mark Richt once. That meeting was to end his football career at Georgia. Now, just two months later, Burrows was back in the head coach's office.

He didn't know what to do with the rest of his life. He didn't have a plan for life after football.

"I was getting worried, and wasn't sure what would happen," Burrows said.

Quote"It's NFL or bust until it's bust in its entirety, in every sense of the term," Burrows said. "And by then, it's either too late, life begins now, and I don't really have a plan B."

Richt is keenly aware of this, and the result is his passion project, The Paul Oliver Network, named after the former Georgia and NFL defensive back who shot himself in 2013, following the end of his football career.

The PO Network, as it's now more commonly called, hosts its second annual event at UGA on Saturday. Former Georgia players will meet as part of a mini-reunion, but businessmen will also attend and make it essentially a networking opportunity.

"I'm sure there will be guys that will be looking for opportunities, but there will be guys that have already gotten their lives going, and could hopefully help others along the way," Richt said. "The bottom line is whenever football is over, because football will end, what can we do help them transition into real life?"

That led to the day -- "July 17, I'll never forget," Burrows said -- that he was introduced to someone from CB Richard Ellis, a commercial real estate firm. Burrows later interviewed, was diligent in following up, and in September he was hired. He is in a rotational training program that affords training and the opportunity in a variety of business lines.

Burrows calls the PO Network a "blessing" and credits it for where he is now. He also hopes the network grows beyond his own former football program.

"This is sort of an issue from a young athlete's perspective that needs to be tackled from a national perspective," he said. "Your athlete's attitude of NFL or bust isn't unique to Georgia."

NCAA infractions committee criticized USC for hiring Lane Kiffin, unsealed memo reveals. http://ow.ly/KNGjT

QuoteAmong nearly 500 pages of documents unsealed by a California judge in a lawsuit against the NCAA, Kiffin's name appeared seven times. The case involving former USC assistant Todd McNair deals with the Reggie Bush investigation that predated Kiffin's 2010 hiring, but the polarizing coach was mentioned.

The infractions including extra benefits took place under Pete Carroll, whose departure led to Kiffin's hiring in January 2010. That personnel move didn't sit well with the NCAA's Committee on Infractions, according to a memo and email unsealed Tuesday.

"(Athletics director) Paul Dee was bought in at Miami to clean up a program with serious problems. USC has responded to its problems by bringing in Lane Kiffin," infractions committee member Rodney Uphoff wrote in a memo dated June 10, 2010. "They need a wakeup call that doing things the wrong way will have serious consequences. In light of all of the problems at USC, a failure to send a serious message in this case undercuts efforts to help clean up NCAA sports."

Kiffin's staff committed 12 highly-publicized secondary violations in his one season at Tennessee in 2009

Who are the best football/hoops coaching combos of all-time? I teamed with @ESPNRittenberg to find answers. http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12592053/kentucky-wildcats-duke-blue-devils-lead-best-football-basketball-coaching-combos ...

Quote1. Adolph Rupp and Bear Bryant
School: Kentucky
Overlap: 1946-53
While Rupp was busy building one of the most storied basketball programs in history, Bryant was just getting his start as the most iconic figure in college football history...

2. Mike Krzyzewski and Steve Spurrier
School: Duke
Overlap: 1987-89...

3. Billy Donovan and Urban Meyer
School: Florida
Overlap: 2005-10
Good luck finding a year they remember more fondly at Florida than 2006. Donovan guided the Gators to their first national championship in basketball, which turned out to be the first of two straight national titles. Meyer delivered later that fall with a football crown, the Gators' first in a decade...

4. Tom Izzo and Nick Saban
School: Michigan State
Overlap: 1995-99...

6. Billy Donovan and Steve Spurrier
School: Florida
Overlap: 1996-2001
Donovan and Spurrier each make their second appearance on this list...

10. Eddie Sutton and Frank Broyles
School: Arkansas
Overlap: 1974-76
Broyles was wrapping up his coaching career in Fayetteville around the time Sutton began a run that ended with more than 800 wins. Under Broyles, Arkansas won seven Southwest Conference championships and its only national title in 1964. He won two Cotton Bowl championships and had nine top-10 finishes. Sutton guided Arkansas to the NCAA tournament in each of his final nine seasons, five consecutive Southwest Conference titles and the Final Four in 1978. He had Elite Eight appearances at three different schools (Arkansas, Kentucky and Oklahoma State), three Final Four appearances and eight regular-season league championships. Both men are Hall of Famers in their sports, Broyles entering in 1983 and Sutton in 2011...

Watch Jon Voight as Bear Bryant, Caleb Castille as Tony Nathan in 'Woodlawn' trailer | http://ow.ly/L96rR

QuoteThe first trailer for the upcoming football film "Woodlawn" has been released online.

The film, set against the backdrop of high school football in Birmingham in the early 1970s, features Academy Award winner Jon Voight as Paul "Bear" Bryant.

According to "Woodlawn's" press notes, the film "explores how the struggling, racially torn team was brought together in the spirit of love and unity, leading to the record-shattering Banks vs. Woodlawn football game at Legion Field in November 1974."

Other "Woodlawn" cast members include Sean Astin [Rudy from the SEC Network College Football Playoff promotions] as Woodlawn team chaplain Hank Erwin, C. Thomas Howell [Soul Man, Red Dawn] as legendary Banks coach Shorty White and Sherri Shepard as Nathan's mother.

QuoteBret Bielema and Mike Anderson, Arkansas

... After Year 1, there were questions as to whether he could ever win in the SEC. But now people are picking the Razorbacks as a darkhorse team in the West. Clearly, Bielema is trending in the right direction and so is his counterpart. Anderson's hoops team finished second in the conference and made the Round of 32 this past season. If history is any indication, that's only the beginning. Once he gets players to fit his system...

Muschamp fires back at McElwain for last week's roster remarks | http://editorsdesk.blogs.gatorsports.com/11004/muschamp-responds-to-mcelwains-roster-remarks/ ... via @Gator_sports #Gators

QuoteIn his first news conference with the media following his firing at UF last November, Muschamp told the media his successor couldn't complain about the inherited roster.

"Don't let that new guy tell you he ain't got no good players," he said. "Tell you that right now. They got some good football players in that locker room."

Gators coach Jim McElwain challenged that assertion last Friday when discussing the lack of O-linemen.

"It's one of those things," he said. "You've got to play the hand you're dealt. And right now, quite honestly, the hand we were dealt is really insufficient at some of the areas."

Muschamp, now the defensive coordinator at Auburn, fired back Thursday when asked about the statement he made in November and McElwain's comments last week.

"I didn't see any comments," Muschamp said in his presser. "At the time (November), D.J. Humphries and Tyler Moore had not declared for the NFL draft. That's two guys that started a lot of ball games, and Rod Johnson was a returning starter.

"Certainly at that position, at the offensive line the number are obviously down ... but I didn't know of any comments. Other than that, there's a lot of good football players sitting down there."

A reporter began to ask the next question, but Muschamp interrupted to take one last jab at McElwain.

"He said he could coach a dog and win," Muschamp said. "Heck, he like the dog better than his players?"

This isn't the first time a current and former head coach at Florida have been at odds.

Muschamp took a few shots at Meyer during his UF tenure, most notably for Ohio State turning in the Gators for an alleged secondary recruiting violation.

Meyer said he had to combat a negative locker room culture after taking over for Ron Zook. Meyer later claimed his comments weren't aimed at Zook, but Zook took offense to them.

Report: Lou Holtz, ESPN parting ways

QuoteAccording to a report from Richard Deitsch of SI.com, ESPN has parted ways with Holtz, the long-time college football analyst...

Holtz, the former head coach at North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota, Notre Dame and South Carolina, has been with the network since 2004, serving mainly as, under the direction of host Rece Davis, the foil to Mark May's hubris.

The move is not that surprising as, one, Holtz is 78 years of age and, two, he talked of the 2014 season being his last with the network.

"Lou brought a champion's perspective and a legacy of accomplishment to our coverage along with his distinctive style and humor," an ESPN spokesperson said in an email statement to Deitsch. "We appreciate his contributions and wish him all the best in the future."

With Rece Davis replacing Chris Fowler as the orchestrator of the iconic College GameDay pregame show, and with Holtz's departure, ESPN's Saturday studio shows will certainly take on a new look moving forward.  Whether that new look includes the controversial May remains to be seen.

New Urban Meyer contract significantly closes pay gap on Saban

QuoteOSU not so surprisingly announced that the university and Meyer have reached agreement on a contract extension that would keep the coach with the Buckeyes through the 2020 season.  The new deal still needs the approval of the school's board, although that's expected to be nothing more than a rubber-stamp maneuver.

A raise was included in the new contract as well as Meyer, who made $4.536 million in total compensation in 2014, will make $5.8 million in 2015.  The six years thereafter, the deal will average a whopping $6.5 million annually.

In June of last year, Alabama announced that Nick Saban, already the highest-paid coach in the sport, had agreed to a new contract that would pay him an average of $6.5 million a year.  According to USA Today's annual salary database, Saban earned $7.16 million in 2014.

Meyer had been the sixth-highest paid coach in 2014, but now leapfrogs Michigan State's Mark Dantonio ($5.6 million), Oklahoma's Bob Stoops ($5.08 million), Texas A&M's Kevin Sumlin ($5 million) and Texas' Charlie Strong ($5 million). Along with Meyer and those already mentioned, Michigan's Jim Harbaugh ($5 million)and Florida State's Jimbo Fisher ($5 million) are now in the $5 million-per-year club...

In Meyer's three seasons in Columbus, the Buckeyes have gone 38-3 — including a perfect 24-0 conference mark in the regular season...
