I watched a lot of it today (along with the NCAA Tourney)......and I am left with this thought:

Baseball got a big black eye today, and Selig, his VP, and Fehr were made to look like the buffoons many already believed they were....They just merely validated it.  A representative from Connecticut (Shay) was particularly harsh, demanding to know why it takes "5 strikes" before a player is gone and basically calling MLB liars....

From the player side, Frank Thomas and Rafael Palmeiro denied taking any steriods, which is believable.  Sammy Sosa denied it as well....which isn't.  Sadly McGwire took the 5th on the question, and was near tears.....He lost a lot today...

I'd rather Big Mac take the 5th.  Atleast he's not trying to snow us by saying he didn't know what he was doing like that SF LF guy.

Windy, do you see the irony in that MLB says it takes 5 strikes and you are out with steroids but it only takes 3 pitched strikes to send your ass back to the bench?  Selig is BAD for baseball and if anyone who did not think that before need only watch his performance today to see it.

"I'd rather lose a game like that than a 5-4 ballgame when somebody walks in the winning run or makes an error" -MSU's former head coach Ron Polk after South Carolina pummeled the Bulldogs 20-3 on 3/23/2007.

I do not like Selig but am comfortable with the way he's handled this.

I suspect that many baseball people would like to state what seems obvious to me (but may not be to others):
1. steroids won't make your reflexes faster
2. steroids won't make your eyesight better
3. steroids won't help your flexibility
4. steroids won't help your batting if you can't make contact with the ball (see above)

I took great delight in noting to a friend the Clintonesque manner that Palmiero waggled a finger at the committee and said "I didn't take steroids". Note that he didn't say "performance enhancing drugs" because he is or was a spokesman for Viagra!

The parents claiming that steroids killed their kids reminded me of the rock music hearings of the late 1980s when parents claimed listening to rock music caused their kids to commit suicide. C'mon, folks, you look a bit foolish if you claim its ONLY rock music/steroids.

When I was at UA a friend was from Plano and referred to it as "Suicide High"--15 during their senior year, or something like that. I'm sure that there was no other influence on the child's suicide besides steroids. I am sorry for your loss, and feel your need to point a finger, but I don't buy that its ONLY steroids that led to the suicide.

McGwire's refusal to answer some of the questions was amusing. I personally wish he would have noted his own use of over-the-counter enhancements and note that you can buy tons of enhancement materials at GNC or the local health food store. He could have had a light moment by noting that Palmiero was a spokesman for Viagra and that McGwire himself frequented GNC (or whereever) to purchase his stuff. If we wish to demonize that use, fine, but we should outlaw it from the stores like we did Ephedra.

BTW, does anyone have a clear enough understanding of pharmaceuticals and chemistry to tell me if Ephedra and the pseudophrine (sp?) that is culled from OTC meds for use in methamphetamines are chemically related. If so, what is to keep a ballplayer from taking excessive doses of Sudafed as a performance enhancing drug?
I am a Hog fan. I was long before my name was etched, twice, on the sidewalks on the Hill. I will be long after Sam Pittman and Eric Mussleman are coaches, and Hunter Yuracheck is AD. I am a Hog fan when we win, when we lose and when we don't play. I love hearing the UA band play the National Anthem on game day, but I sing along to the Alma Mater. Steriods will not make contact with the ball for you, but they will make you bat speed quicker and a flyball out becomes a 400 ft homer. As far as sudafed being related to ehpedra, they are closely related and both increase metabolic rate and increase energy. Whether or not this acutally increases performance, who knows? But the meth epidemic in this country warrants at least looking at taking both off the market for good.

Porcine, given the number of recent addtions to the OTC allergy market (Allegra, claritin, etc.) it doesn't make a lot of sense to leave something like Sudafed on the market. It races my heart so much I can't take it. Then again, I haven't had a sudafed lobbyist take me to lunch to convince me otherwise...
