Hayes: With Nick Saban retiring, only 1 coach is capable of replacing the GOAT: Lane Freakin' Kiffin

QuoteThere's only one way this can end, only one coach who can boldly step into the shadow of Nick Saban at Alabama and pull it off without hesitation or trepidation.

Only one coach who won't be overwhelmed by the moment of grabbing the wheel at the biggest program in college football, or the passionate and obsessively maniacal fan base that comes with it.

Don't overthink it, Alabama. Hire Lane Kiffin.

Hire the best fit for the job. And by best fit, I mean the coach best prepared to backfill seamlessly into the most difficult follow in the history of coaching.

Bigger than Gene Bartow following John Wooden at UCLA, or Jon Scheyer following Coach K, or whoever eventually (maybe sooner than later) follows Bill Belichick at the Patriots.

And yes, bigger than Ray Perkins following Bear Bryant.

How in the world do you follow a coach who won 6 national championships, and elevated a blue-blood program to the envy of all college football? A coach with 12 seasons of at least 12 victories — including 4 seasons of 14 wins! — and a record 44 first-round NFL Draft picks.

A coach who — considering the tenuous nature of college football, the competition and ever-changing player management — is the greatest ever at his profession. In any sport.

The shorts answer is you don't.

No one wants to be the guy who follows the legend. Everyone wants to follow the guy who followed the legend.

It is here where we return to Kiffin, who frankly, doesn't give a damn about any of those semantics. He's seen the circus and knows all its flaws.

When you get fired on the tarmac at LAX at 4 in the morning, and lose the best job in college football (at the time), you've pretty much seen it all.

He has been to the big top and ridden the roller-coaster and seen the bearded lady —

AJ McCarron: Alabama Lane Kiffin's dream job, 'Hell, he tweets Roll Tide more than 'Come to the Sip'

By Mark Heim |

QuoteAJ McCarron wasn't all that surprised Nick Saban announced his retirement Wednesday. He saw the signs.

Speaking of seeing the signs, the Cincinnati quarterback and former Alabama play-caller didn't mince words with who he thought should replace the GOAT: Lane Kiffin.

"I think it has to become someone involved with the university, involved with (Saban's) process and seen throughout the years the amount of work it took to get it to the point to where he left it now.

"For me it is Lane Kiffin. I think it needs to be an offensive guy. Lane has been in the SEC for a while. He knows the type of athletes that it takes to win in the SEC.

"Lane's done that for years in the SEC," McCarron said. He's recruiting well at Ole Miss, which is a hard place to recruit and, especially in the SEC West against LSU and Alabama each year.

"It's a perfect set up for him.

"Lane is the only coach in college football that is a head coach of another university that is allowed to tweet about another university that is in the same conference, the same division as him over the years.

"Hell, he tweets 'Roll Tide' more than he does 'Come to the Sip.'

"If that's what he does - and stayed in the good graces of Nick Saban, calling him the GOAT, he always picks Alabama, talks week about Alabama. This is his dream job."

Why Kalen DeBoer could be a candidate for the Alabama job to replace Nick Saban (and why not)

By Matt Stahl |

QuoteAs Alabama football goes about its search for Nick Saban's replacement, after the head coach retired on Wednesday, several names have been thrown around in public. One of those is Washington head coach Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer and the Huskies just finished their season in the national championship game. Here's why he would, and wouldn't, be a serious candidate for the Alabama job.

Who is Dan Lanning? Oregon coach has direct connection to Saban, Alabama

By Creg Stephenson |

QuoteSince news broke of Nick Saban's retirement as Alabama's head football coach, one name gaining traction as a potential replacement is that of Oregon's Dan Lanning.

Here's a breakdown on who Lanning is, where he's worked, what he's accomplished and what is his connection to Saban and Alabama:

Friedlander: Dabo might be the right coach for Alabama at the right time

QuoteWilliam Christopher Swinney wears an orange tiger paw on his pullover. Beneath it, the blood that flows through his veins is the color of a crimson tide.

So much so that it's long been a widely-held belief he'd someday follow his heart and return to his alma mater once Nick Saban decided to retire.

The fact that his buyout at Clemson is $2.5 million more if he goes to Alabama than it is for any other job in the country should tell you everything you need to know.

When your mother calls you home, you don't argue with her. You come running.

Well, that day might have finally arrived.

But the air of inevitability that once surrounded the man America knows as Dabo has gone the way of the 4-team Playoff. The 2 potential successors most prominently mentioned over the past 24 hours are Oregon's Dan Lanning and Steve Sarkisian, both former Saban assistants.

Not long after Wednesday's surprise announcement, a group of fans gathered around a makeshift shrine to the now-former coach outside Bryant-Denny Stadium and began chanting "Anyone but Dabo!"

It's a development that proves timing really is everything. Even for a coach whose resume includes 5 Playoff appearances and a pair of nattys — both over Saban and Alabama, by the way —

McElroy gives 0% chance for Dabo Swinney, Lane Kiffin to land Alabama job
On3 image
by:
Sam GillenH2O

Would know.

QuoteMcElroy has already scratched off two other names.

McElroy assessed the odds for a handful of names that could be in consideration in Tuscaloosa during 'McElroy and Cubelic In The Morning' on Thursday. Of all the names that they went over, he went ahead and gave it a 0% chance that either Clemson's Dabo Swinney or Ole Miss' Lane Kiffin would get the job.

"Zero-percent chance," said McEloy on Swinney's odds.

"Zero-percent chance," McEloy said again when it came to Kiffin's probability.

McElroy also had the chances on Dan Lanning as "much, much lower" than the fanbase may have believed them to be. That ended up being the case with Lanning's announcement this morning that he'd be remaining in Eugene.

McElroy also gave a 1% chance to Colorado's Deion Sanders. Meanwhile, his best likelihood went to Washington's Kalen DeBoer at 25%. As he continued, he threw in a name like a Chris Klieman at Kansas State too as an idea that some might consider as out of left field.

Still, back to Swinney or Kiffin...

Still, according to McElroy, neither has a very good shot at becoming the next man roaming the sidelines at Alabama. That's coming from the guy who also joked that his name may very well be in the mix too based on the odds that are floating around.

"It's going to cost them – not as much as Lanning but it's going to cost them," McElroy laughed.

Joel Klatt explains why Steve Sarkisian will not accept Alabama job

by:
Dan Morrison

QuoteAlabama head coach Nick Saban retired and with that, the landscape of college football received a major shake-up. With that, several coaches have also been suggested to be the next head coach at Alabama. That includes Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian.

However, despite Sarkisian's name being floated for the job, analyst Joel Klatt explained why he doesn't think Sarkisian would accept the Alabama job.

"Well, he's the name that you have to call first," Joel Klatt said. "So, whether he's going to take it or not, that's the name that you have to start with. And it's because he has every single box that they want to check off. He is a very strong recruiter, he's got a long history of being a head coach, and frankly — and people don't want to admit this — he was successful at every place, even through the disaster that was his time at USC."

Steve Sarkisian was the offensive coordinator at Alabama. Many people have pointed to his success there and their familiarity as a key reason why he could become the Crimson Tide head coach.

"He's got a history at Alabama and then here's a note that I don't think many people realized about Steve Sarkisian; a few years ago, he was in line and offered a job that he wanted to take. And he went to tell Coach Saban that that was his intention. And Coach Saban said, 'No, that's not what you're going to do. You're going to be the next coach here.' Nick Saban, I believe, had every intention to go the Bob Stoops or Urban Meyer route with Alabama and Steve Sarkisian. That had worked so well in Oklahoma and clearly had been working at Ohio State, and he wanted to keep Sark around," Klatt said.

Texas is, like Alabama, one of the biggest jobs...

With Dan Lanning staying at Oregon, who else would replace Nick Saban as Alabama's next head coach?

By Matt Boecker |

QuoteWith Lanning off the market, even more anxiety is swirling among fanbases with coaches in danger of being poached:

Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin
At 33 years old, Lane Kiffin was the youngest active head coach when he took the reins at Tennessee in 2009. After just one year in Knoxville, Kiffin was USC's head coach from 2010 to 2013 until he was fired mid-season.

Lane returned to the SEC and was Alabama's offensive coordinator for three years, earning the Broyles Award...

Steve Sarkisian
Steve Sarkisian was terminated from USC in his second year on the job due to off-the-field issues. Saban then hired Sarkisian the following season as an analyst, and he was Alabama's acting offensive coordinator in the National Championship vs. Clemson when it was announced Kiffin would be leaving for FAU.

 Dabo
Clemson was an above-average program for years until Dabo Swinney became the head coach in 2009. Swinney has since led the Tigers to four CFP appearances and two National Championships.

Backfilling arguably the best coach in college football history will likely be the most important decision of Byrne's career. The long-term ramifications will be monumental if Alabama is back on the market later this year.

Alabama coaching search: Report lists trio of 'emerging' contenders for Crimson Tide vacancy
Paul Harvey | 4 minutes ago

QuoteAlabama coaching search is heating up with a Thursday report linking a trio of "emerging" candidates to potentially interview for the job.

According to John Brice with Football Scoop, the expectation continues to be that Alabama AD Greg Byrne will name the next head coach by the end of the week. Brice pointed to what was "an incredibly active day" in the search on Thursday with three people "emerging as serious contenders along the lines of earning interviews."

That trio consists of Washington coach Kalen DeBoer, Florida State coach Mike Norvell and current Alabama offensive coordinator Tommy Rees. From that group, Rees is the only individual without any head coaching experience.

While that group appears to be in the lead in the process, Brice also reports Drink and Maryland coach Mike Locksley as having "some measure of traction" in Alabama's search. Locksley — a former offensive coordinator under Saban — also has "significant support from former players" with Brice also reporting a belief that Locksley has key support from one "mega-booster" and top former Alabama assistants.

FSU AD sends not-so-cryptic message about Mike Norvell amid Alabama head coach search

Goodman: Who is Kalen DeBoer :hmmm:

A coach with a golden ticket

QuoteKalen DeBoer is the new coach at Alabama, picked on Friday to replace the greatest college football coach of all time.

No one is expecting DeBoer to be the next Nick Saban. That's a ridiculous proposition. DeBoer and Saban do have something in common from the beginning, though. Both lost to Jim Harbaugh's Michigan before leaving their jobs.

Good luck, Coach. That'll be the last time anyone puts you on even ground with the GOAT.

Lose two games at Alabama, and it'll be considered a down year. Lose three games and prepare for pitchforks, insurrectionists, end-time angel prophecies and the sudden multiplication of doomsday preppers throughout the state. No pressure, though. Just be yourself and everything will be fine.

Who is DeBoer? That's what everyone is going to want to know in Alabama because no one has ever heard of him. I'm told he's a softball dad, which is cool. As for football, he's an SEC outsider, but a winner at every level of the game before this chance of a lifetime. Not that any of that is going to matter to fans.

DeBoer has been a coach at the FBS level for four years and the Power 5 level for two. During his brief time in Seattle, his record was a tidy 25-3. He went 11-2 at Washington in 2022 and 14-1 last season, leading the Huskies to the national championship game. Here's a fun fact. DeBoer is 2-0 against Texas over the last two years. Alabama has two wins against the Longhorns in the last 121 years.

DeBoer is 49 years old and originally from South Dakota. What I like about him is that he has quickly worked his way up from the NAIA level, winning at every stop along the way. There are skills that DeBoer brings to Alabama that can't be bought at any price. What concerns me is that DeBoer has never recruited in the SEC and it's a vicious, unforgiving ecosystem that devours the unprepared, overconfident and people who generally require sleep to function.

DeBoer is stepping into one of the most difficult jobs in sports history, taking over Alabama after the mighty reign of Saban. That's one way to frame it. I see it differently.

Saban is leaving DeBoer the keys to a mansion in perfect working condition. There are no surprising leaks or faulty wires ready to shock the new homeowner. The roof is sound. The foundation is tip-top. Everything is fully stocked and a fleet of luxury automobiles are in the garage. DeBoer has it all at his disposal, but there's also something else.

DeBoer takes over Alabama at a time in college football when everything is changing. The SEC is expanding to 16 teams this summer and adopting a single-division format. The old, impossibly difficult SEC West is gone. The landscape will be different for everybody this season and the College Football Playoff is going to 12 teams. Recruiting is different, too. NIL collectives buy players. If DeBoer and athletics director Greg Byrne can keep the coffers full, then the talent level shouldn't fall off much if at all.

Feldman evaluates comparisons between Bryan Harsin to Auburn, Kalen DeBoer to Alabama

by:
Nick Schultz

QuoteThe search to replace Nick Saban appears to be reaching its conclusion as Alabama is finalizing a deal to hire Washington's Kalen DeBoer to succeed him. He doesn't have any ties to the SEC from prior coaching stops, though, which adds to the intrigue around the hire.

In fact, some fans compared the situation to the one Auburn was in ahead of the 2021 season. That's when the Tigers brought in Bryan Harsin —

According to The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, though, Harsin and DeBoer are different from one another. While they both came up through the offensive coaching ranks, Feldman said the different circumstances around their hires make it hard to compare the two.

"I've seen comparisons within the last 24 hours about him and Harsin, but you know, they're not very similar, to be honest," Feldman said on The Paul Finebaum Show. "They don't come from the same coaching tree, they don't have the same temperament. They're both offensive guys at the core, they both come from small towns from far away. But I think that's kind of where the similarity ends.

"And also, Harsin jumped into a really bad situation. They didn't want him there. As you know, the dynamic was all screwy from the moment he got there. I think here, you have an AD who really wants you. It's a tough situation, but I just think the dynamic is way different."

Harsin's tenure at Auburn was a tumultuous one. He had a 9-12 record with the Tigers after amassing a 69-19 record in seven seasons at Boise State, and a 7-5 mark at Arkansas State.

Reggie Bush says Nick Saban can't handle a level playing field: 'NIL ran him away'

By Mark Heim

Would Know.

QuoteUSC star posted the 72-year-old coach no longer had control over 5-star athletes because of NIL.

"NIL ran him away," the Fox college football analyst commented on ESPN's Instagram post. "He has no more control over 5-star recruits. The playing field is level, and he can't handle that."

Bush's was commenting on a post, which shared Saban's explanation on why he decided to retire. On Thursday - in an interview with Rece Davis - Saban explained his reasons for stepping aside. Among them was his age.

"I actually thought that hiring coaches, recruiting players, that my age started to become a little bit of an issue," he said. "People wanted assurances that I was going to be here for three years, five years, whatever. It got harder and harder to be honest with them."

It's no secret Saban has made comments against NIL. While he has always said he has been in favor or player's making money, he wants to see some structure.

In June, Saban was part of an SEC contingent headed to Washington on to lobby Congress for federal assistance in regulating NIL.

"I think that the whole idea is, we want to provide information based on our experience, so that maybe people that are involved in the House and Senate both sort of have an idea of what the issues really are and how it can impact and affect college football in the future," Saban said at the time.

'Husky Harsin': Auburn fans react to Alabama reportedly hiring Washington's Kalen DeBoer

QuoteIn 2020, Auburn hired Bryan Harsin as the Tigers' next head coach after he spent seven seasons at the helm of Boise State's program.

Unfortunately for Harsin and the Tigers, Harsin's lack of ties and experience in the Southeast proved difficult to overcome. Harsin spent his less-than-two-seasons on The Plains struggling to fit into the culture at Auburn, as well as establish relationships on the recruiting trail.

Will Alabama's freshly hired head coach experience the same challenges?

The good news about Alabama's hire of Kalen DeBoer: he has zero ties to the south, making this a culture change for him, which sounds a lot like Bryan Harsin at Auburn.

The bad news: Kalen DeBoer is 104-12 and has won titles, so this feels more akin to Urban Meyer to Florida.

Byrne finally claims when he penultimately knew Nick Saban would retire

by:
Andrew Graham

QuoteUntil the man stood up in front of his team and said it himself, even Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne wasn't sure that Nick Saban was seriously going to retire. But the legendary coach did, in fact, hang it up and set the table for a major hire for Byrne:

"I felt he was going to step down, going into the meeting. But, you know, hoping that he wouldn't. Until I actually heard it, I didn't want to really believe it, right? And he's going to — I've said this before: Most programs haven't had one iconic coach. Alabama's had two. And it's amazing, to be able to — I never met coach Bryant, obviously — to have the success that coach Saban had and the sustained success that he had, his ability to stay focused on the task at hand and allowing him to take those things one at a time is truly remarkable. And so I think really, as he wrestled with that decision, until the words came out of his mouth, I don't know if anybody was quite sure about it. So it was a very difficult decision for him, understandably," Byrne said.

Byrne, however, was not caught off guard

"I would say, coach is, as everybody knows — he's so focused, right? And he's as focused an individual as I've ever worked with and I've been around coaches my entire life. So he didn't even allow that to be part of the conversation until he felt it was at a point where he could even have the conversation. So I'm certainly assuming that he and Miss Terry talked about it before he and I talked about it, understandably. But no, he stayed focused on what the task was at hand. But at the same time, too, and I said this publicly, he didn't surprise me because he had been communicating with me, which I truly appreciate. It helped us be in the best position that we could be when that time came," Byrne said.

Greg Byrne explains why he rightly avoided the Nick Saban coaching tree in finding Alabama's replacement

Paul Harvey | Pg. 2

QuoteGreg Byrne faced the most unenviable task in college football this offseason and arguably one of the toughest tasks in the history of the sport.

That task, of course, was replacing legendary head coach Nick Saban:

"We obviously were so fortunate for the impact that coach Saban and Miss Terry made on our program and will continue to make. I also thought it would not have been smart to say, 'Well, we're only going to hire somebody tied to Coach Saban.' I think we had to be open-minded to who the candidates were and what their backgrounds were," said Byrne. "I think if we tried to hire somebody that tried to look like and act like Coach Saban it probably wouldn't have been good. There's only one Nick Saban.

"And I think one of the things that attracted coach DeBoer to us right off the bat was he was very comfortable with who he was as a coach and how he would handle things, but he also had tremendous respect and admiration for coach Saban," Bryne explained.

Why Byrne's process might not matter, even if it was correct
